The signage is not great, especially if you are looking for the waterfall. But once found, it was a…read moregreat hike. There are 3 different trails, from 0.5m to 1m each way. You can go to the summit and get to see the beautiful river or head down to the waterfall. Unfortunately we went after a dry summer, and the waterfall was a very small trickle which was anticlimactic. But the hike was still fun. Warning: some paths are very narrow and can only take one person at a time. If going with kids, be warned. If your kids are prone to not listening and wandering, this is not the right hike. The paths are not paved and the risk of getting hurt if varying off-course are great. Since I mentioned about the signage...here are some tips. If you go to the general parking area, that is for the beach. It is very pretty to walk along and take photos or launch kayaks...but this is not the parking lot for the waterfall. Instead, go to the small parking lot on the other side of the road (do not pass the train tracks). If you go right, there is good signage that explains the 3 trails and markers. If you go left, it's the shortest 0.5m path directly to the waterfall (it's the red/blue path). Enjoy!

Twin Brooks Park is a very beautiful and well maintained park. It has a nice paved walking/bike…read morepath with flowers and trees that bloom in spring and summer. There are a total of 5 ponds/lakes, two of which people sometimes fish at. There are swings (in very good condition) and a playground that is suitable for kids around age 4-13. In the winter Twin Brooks has easily the best sledding hill in a 10 mile radius. It's such a good sledding hill that it can actually be dangerous due to the sheer distance. With most sleds you don't have to worry but with high quality inner tubes you can generate a lot of speed. Sledding not your thing? No problem! There is also an extensive network of mountain biking/hiking trails in the woods to the north of the park. In fact you can mountain bike or hike from Beach Memorial Park all the way to Twin Brooks! Twin Brooks is beautiful in all 4 seasons, just don't forget your Trumbull parking pass. If you don't have one there is street parking on Franklin Street.

Osbornedale State Park has a hiking trail, fishing, picnic areas, and t nearby Osborne Homestead Museum. The prominent Osborne family owned numerous metal working and fabric product factories in the area. At the young age of 31, Frances Osborne, later Mrs. Waldo Kellogg, took over the family business when her father died in 1907. Miss Osborne decided to take over the family business instead of selling it. Additionally, it was contrary to the advice of the executers of her father's estate, and a brave undertaking for a woman in the early part of the century. Despite the prejudices against woman in business at that time, Mrs. Frances Osborne Kellogg was very successful in her many businesses and investments. By adhering to the belief that one should always buy land but never sell it. Mrs. Kellogg gradually acquired numerous separate farms which now comprise the 350 acre Osbornedale State Park, an unusually large property in the Derby-Ansonia area.

There's not much here in the way of facilities, it being a state forest and not one of the CT parks. There's a lot, that actually fills up pretty quickly, so arriving earlier in the day is better. Perfect for picnics, family gatherings (rent out the pavilion), or the occasional hike. Watch out for ticks while hiking and be sure to bring plenty of water, the hiking trail can run a bit long if you constantly stop to take pictures as I do. Parking is a bit scarce (about 30-40 spots, but all taken during the week at 2pm!). If you live in the area and are tired of hop brook, give Southford Falls a try. You wont be disappointed.

I showed up with my own paddleboard and had a great time exploring the Long Island Sound from Walnut Beach. They also rent bicycles. They have a cute little shop right near the water. The showers are clean and the water is just right. Every day the camp site workers come by to keep everything nice and neat. Definitely a place to return to in the future, we paid $77 for 4 days, 6 people, 2 tents & 2 vehicles.... you can't beat that for a great outdoors experience with the family.

I appreciate the little parking lot, although it can get pretty crowded on the weekend so plan accordingly! The trail around the lake is perfect for a brisk walk with lots of shade. My husband and I have walked it many times and it's always well kept with very little traffic. There's a portapotty but no other bathroom options aside from that so come prepared!
