Our cat was declining in health. We were able to meet e vet snd drop off for care. When we picked up the cat the vet was not present. We had yo request someone to go over the chart with us. This was in no November. I called yesterday for help. Again very snarky. I was actually referred to go see a vet at a animal hospital to assist in s passing. No referral names were given. We found a new vet. Thank goodness.

7 years ago, I adopted a stray kitten and brought her in for vaccinations and spay. I had no idea…read morewhat you're supposed to do with a cat. After the first visit, I was surprised at how low the cost was; about 50% less than anticipated. Also a little surprised that my follow-up visit was not for the spay. How many visits was this going to take? At my follow-up, I got asked (again) if the kitten was an indoor cat, an indoor/outdoor, or an outdoor. Little did I know, she invented an extra category to make it easier for me to admit my cat dwells in the dangerous outdoors. But I said mostly indoor, maybe indoor/outdoor because I'm still letting her go outside for a few minutes once and awhile (never anymore). I clearly remember saying, "Definitely not outdoor." She then recommends a Feline Leukemia test. Not the vaccine. The test. I asked why. To see if she has is positive; if not, then we vaccinate. I ask if it's curable. She says it is not. I refuse the test because it makes no sense to know if she will die, but indicate they can go ahead and vaccinate her. She says it will save me money to test her first, since the vaccine is required every year. Little did I know the vaccine is completely unnecessary for "mostly" indoor cats, confers lifelong immunity, and adult cats have a natural immunity to the disease. Little did I know, almost no one with even an outdoor-only cat should be vaccinating their cat yearly for leukemia and that it was purely a money grab. So I very skeptically consent to the "expert" recommendation; but clearly, I did not give informed consent and my initial refusal was swatted away with misinformation. I was also billed for an unnecessary lab test that was free as part of my initial exam; that even knowing nothing about medical care, I would have declined as excessive to repeat on the follow-up. I get the bill at end, which is about triple what I had anticipated. When I eventually bring in my kitten for her spay, the vet wants to know if I'd also like to declaw. It will save me money to do it now, since I won't have to pay for the other surgery costs twice. Little did I know, declawing is banned in Europe for being inhumane, and most vets in the United States would never suggest such a procedure completely out of the blue because of its controversial status. I declined. The bill was about 20% higher than anticipated. I brought in my cat for its final visit to get the leukemia shot. I was highly skeptical at this point, mostly because of the billing. I called ahead of time to find out the billing details. I suspect I might be hit with an examination fee, and some other hidden nonsense. I was prepared to fight and refuse to pay anything I was not expressly told about. My bill was exactly as anticipated. By this point, I knew something wasn't right. The billing was out of whack with expectations, and I was constantly being pressured to super-size my medical procedures. So, I started reading. The next thing I had done was at a different vet. And now I don't trust the medical opinion of any vets, which probably isn't fair to most vets, but is the case nonetheless. I now have to be a damned vet and then pay someone with a state license to carry out my own medical judgments, just to prevent being conned. Shouldn't I be the one with the license, if that's the case? As far as I'm concerned, Dr. Grappin still owes me the cost of a two lab tests and vaccine. I've never formally complained because this scenario is probably not that unusual, but maybe one day I will. 7 years later, I'm still angry. My relatives have been going to that same location, previously owned by someone else, for at least 25 years. I've been pretty adamant that they switch. By law, cats don't require any vaccinations in Michigan. Vet offices should not be high-pressure sales offices to push unnecessary vaccines and lab tests.

I've had a wonderful experience with every visit to Animal Medical Center. As others have said, you…read moreare your pet's advocate, and I am no exception. We've had behavioral issues with our feline in the past... they worked with us not only by appointment, but calling over the phone at all random times as well. They've suggested natural remedies or items from pet stores to buy. To me, that means they aren't looking at the bottom dollar with how many drugs they can push on your animals. When I lived in another city, they allowed me to keep my feline there all day until I was able to pick her up after work with little to no charge. Both vets have a comforting way about them that leave my pets as calm as can be in a stressful situation. Before leaving the office, they make sure all questions have been answered. They are straight forward, because like the advocate we are for our pets, they also are working to keep them healthy. There have been times when I've left and thought my butt was handed to me... but that's simply because it was needed at that time (I have a pretty fat cat who will become unhealthy if I don't take action). They care. So far so good!!

Warning / Experience with Countryside Animal Health Center (Dr. Love)…read more I wanted to share an experience I had this morning to caution other local pet owners, especially those with animals sensitive to vaccines or having medical illness. My indoor cat, Gracie, woke up very sick today. She was clearly distressed, and emptied her full bladder directly on me in bed--a clear cry for help. She is an established patient at Countryside Animal Health Center, so I called right away to get her evaluated. When scheduling, I was upfront that she could not receive a rabies booster today because she had an adverse reaction to her last one (two to three days of severe lethargy where I honestly wasn't sure she would pull through). When we arrived, I explained Gracie's acute symptoms and medical history to the technician and offered to sign a waiver for the rabies shot so we could focus on whatever infection or illness she is actively battling. Instead of professional care, the tech walked into the back room, and I could clearly hear the staff and doctor laughing and openly making fun of me through the door for asking to sign a waiver. When Dr. Love walked in, she didn't examine Gracie. She gave me an ultimatum: Gracie had to get the rabies vaccine right then and there, or she would refuse to see her. Turning away an animal in active distress because the owner won't consent to giving a non-emergency booster to a sick pet cat who almost died from their last shot is horrifying. Not to mention the cat is indoors with zero exposure to other animals. Also, giving an acutely sick cat a shot today doesn't magically make rabies disappear if you were to have been bitten today, genius. It takes 10 days to take effect/ provide immunity. The complete lack of compassion and professionalism was shocking. I left immediately to find another clinic that actually prioritizes animal welfare. Please be careful taking your pets here if they have special medical histories or need urgent, compassionate care. Gracie is scheduled elsewhere today. Keep her in your thoughts. I can give an update if interested.

Instead, I need to come in and spend $200, before the medication, for them to tell me that his ears have a yeast infection. Let me be clear, the malmetazone otic solution only costs ~$10 - $30 depending on the size of the bottle. I explained that the dog needs help, and that right now I'm now able to spend an extra $200 on top of the medication, and they wouldn't work with me at all; told me it's not legal to give it out because they haven't seen him in a year, which makes zero sense. I could literally have him put down tomorrow and they wouldn't bat an eye, but if I want to use a topical steroid to help control his itching without them making their cut, then I can go fuck myself.
