Excellent lunch plus coffee and cake with beach view. Sunshine made it 5 stars. Totally deserves it.

Mullaghmore Sea Farm - A silent Spanish cannon

Mullaghmore Sea Farm

(1 review)

Yes, I'm always a fan of clean, healthy, environmentally conscious fishmongers. With generations of…read morelocal knowledge, this company has established itself as the go-to place for fresh lobster, crawfish, brown crab, velvet crab, spider crab, sea urchins, prawns and shrimp. Their fishermen use V-notching to conserve lobster stocks. This is where a V-Notch is cut in the tail of female lobsters and they are returned alive to the sea so that they can continue to breed. Not like the "slash and burn", take everything, technique used so often in mostly Pacific fisheries. They also provide cool recipes including one interesting dish of lobster, cream & whiskey called "Dublin Lawyer" (http://www.mullaghmoreseafarm.com/index.php/mullaghmore-lobster-recipes/38-recipes/123-dublin-lawyer-lobster-recipe.html) which sounds mighty tasty. They think the name came from the fat, wealthy alcoholic lawyers in the capitol city. It's hard to imagine when looking out over this pristine coast how violence has marred its charm so many times. A Spanish cannon reminds us of the barbaric treatment of Spanish sailors that survived their ship's wrecking only to be hung by locals without trial (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=spanish%20cannon%20in%20ireland&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CEIQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSpanish_Armada_in_Ireland&ei=unN5Uc20G8GriAKliIDwBg&usg=AFQjCNEEbV8FjkykumhlobPVrbw1Hql4qA&sig2=a8MQ1sqsWAYC9cVEJzV-oQ&bvm=bv.45645796,d.cGE). Or the small float in the middle of the bay to remind us of where Lord Mountbatten and his family were blown to pieces in an IRA attack.(http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=lord%20mountbatten%20death&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CFYQtwIwBA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D4gEMTc9uRzE&ei=m3N5UZucPKORiAKc64GoBw&usg=AFQjCNG1uEmT3U8aKRRa1s6mRm1nt4BTMw&sig2=-oAt_112fVK9nDmbpM7Kug&bvm=bv.45645796,d.cGE) Now though, the waters are quiet and the winds favorable. I hope, as many others do, that this place will never again serve as a reminder of man's primitive nature, and that the fishing will long provide sustenance for new generations of Irish. May they never experience the sectarian violence that mars this beautiful landscape.

Every town in Ireland should have a French style patisserie just like this one; it should be…read morelegislated for and state funded. So how come Sligo gets lucky then, eh? Beautiful places like this are usually only found in larger cities. I'd passed this place a few times on earlier holidays but this was the first opportunity I had to buy to try - so I got a white sourdough loaf. I could have picked brown sourdough and I'm sure I also had a 3rd choice. For €2.50 I got exquisite, classic tasting and smelling, slow fermented sourdough with a crisp crackly outer crust - all it needed was the finest Irish butter. Having a sweet tooth I also opted for a selection of individual sweet pies, cake and macaroons to try. The cake I picked was a raspberry chocolate ganache with a whole raspberry on top (I think about €4 and worth every cent). The Wu flu means that the patisserie isn't open for customers to go inside. It was window shopping through a hatch only. I now have Apple Pay on my phone and I found that €21 can vanish in a nanosecond. I hope when we next return it'll be fully open. It's perfect to pick up picnic goodies too. Worth supporting.

They are very conscientious with COVID protocols, and have a convenient walk-up system to place your order. We had sausage rolls, pain au chocolate, hot chocolate, cappuccino, bleu cheese sourdough, and a baguette. The woman at the counter told me that the owner gets up at 2am to start making everything from scratch. It all looked so beautiful and delicious! I can't wait to go back to Sligo so that I can try all of their treats. Please give them your business!
