Well this has to be the best curry cafe I've yet found in Edinburgh / Scotland…read more As with all such establishments, the decor is functional - you come here for the authenticity of the food. It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)

But it is so good, I wouldn't hesitate making the 140 mile round trip to eat there - honestly! The restaurant offers both take away and eating in, both are just as good as the other. With it being next to the local cinema it is handy to get a bite of eat before or after a film. The restaurant is clean, neutrally decorated and well laid out. But it is the food that makes it so special. They advise on the menu that your food may look slightly less colourful than in other indian restaurants. This is because they do not use artificial colours or flavors so it is all natural and you really can taste the difference. The food is absolutely phenomenal. Everyone I know who has eaten here says it is the best they have ever had by far. The Scottish Borders is a lovely part of the world so I would suggest it is well worth a trip. A day in the Borders and your evening meal at the Shish Tandoori. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Think twice before booking for an important occasion!…read more Feel free to take this review with a pinch of salt as I haven't actually managed to eat at the Valley restaurant, the food looks very good. However I did have a booking for a party of 15 people for the 12th of February, this booking was made and confirmed and a deposit of £150 paid in January. This booking was cancelled today at around midday, which leaves me very little time to organise anything else for an important event! Now I'm 100% sure that the restaurant haven't tried to contact me via email, phone or text prior to the 11th of feb 1 day before the booking, I'm happy to show my phone/email records to prove this as the restaurant are adamant (wrongly) that they have to tried to contact me, well there either telling fibs or they haven't tried very hard at all! So I'm now left trying to organise a stag do for 15 people on the day of the stag do, great thanks you. To make this worse after a refund was agreed upon at my request, the restaurant charged me again another £150 pounds! As of writing this review I still haven't received the £300 pounds I'm owed and this has had a very significant impact on my weekend as it's unfortunately left me without the funds to pay for what I needed to do this weekend! I'm very upset about this! The reason for the cancellation was that the train services had been cancelled. Now if it was my business I would make sure my bookings were kept, I would simply organise alternative means of transport, taxi or minibus. But no this hasn't been offered! What I will say is that you should really think twice about booking here if the occasion is an important one, business, birthday what have you. As there is a very real possibility it will be cancelled and like my experience you will only be told the day before, and have to pay £300 for the privilege. Although the food does look very nice so you might want to risk it...

We had a bus and then a train to catch later that night, so we ate at around 5:30, when the restaurant first opened. At the front of the restaurant was a full bar, and in the back was the main dining room. We were the only customers there, at that time, but it didn't feel uncomfortable. The waiters were there when you needed them, and the ambiance, a softly lit kind of orange-toned-soft-wall kind of place, was enjoyable. Occasionally people would stop by and get take-away, and the restaurant seemed to readily accommodate this. What really set this place apart was its food. My friend ordered what I would discover was the best daal I've ever had in my entire life. She had it with a plain pilau and a garlic naan, and both were very satisfying. I ordered a lamb curry, which was a perfect mix of spicy and meaty, and it came in a reasonable portion. I also had an incredible nut pilau, which was flavored with saffron and crisped onions and cashews. Delicious delicious delicious. If you're ever in the area, I do recommend stopping by. This restaurant is absolutely worth it.
