I have lived here in Santa Fe for over two and a half years now and have had a hard time finding someone who is really good with both cut and color. Furthermore, I want someone who is concerned with the long term health of my hair. I had a fabulous hair stylist in San Diego so I know I had high expectations. I came to Mary with damaged hair from my last stylist, here in Santa Fe. I've been to Mary 3 times now and my hair and my hair is getting healthier with each visit and that's not easy to do when you're recuperating, yet still coloring, damaged hair. Mary also does a great job with precise hair cuts. The cuts keep their shape and fall nicely into shape even when I'm due for my next hair appointment. The color is really what I wanted, it looks rich and has dimension. She really listens to me and does a great job of making it happen. Based on the positive reviews, we called to see if there were any near-term slots while in town and the owner was rude about it. I think she found it offensive that we wouldn't assume to ask 3-4 weeks in advance. We certainly understand that businesses get busy, but there's a nice welcoming way to handle things and a rude, off-putting way. The latter must work for her. Just not for us. read more

Mary did a good on the haircut but was rude and unprofessional otherwise. Insulted the "waxiness" of my hair literally every few minutes (at least 5 or 6 separate times!) during our appointment. She doesn't tell her new clients the fact that she doesn't accept cards, and tries to argue with you saying it's on her website, but it isn't. She rudely insinuated I couldn't afford the hair products she carries. A good haircut but not worth the $65. I do not recommend Mary and I will not be returning. Save your money and go to the Cuttery on St. Mike's for the same unprofessionalism and cut for more than half the price. read more

I needed a last minute refresh and Mary did get me in before my trip. The color not so much. My hair is dirty blonde with mostly grey bleached to platinum with some pink highlights. Since this was my first time I opted for just a root touch up and trim. The cut was perfectly fine. It's hard to mess up a bob even on thin fine hair. She was supposed to match my color to touch up my roots. That didn't quite work out. Instead I have ash blonde roots with the platinum. Love Shear. Recently the number of stylists has been reduced, and there's no one left to do nails. I am a busy, money-conscious, woman with a discerning eye and high standards who has been the unfortunate survivor of countless hair-maiming jobs in and around Santa Fe. Those of you who have been in the area for many years know how difficult it is to find a hair stylist who keeps up with the latest innovations in her craft, gives an excellent cut, has fair prices, doesn't close her shop or move around as soon as you get comfortable, who really LISTENS to what you want, and whose professional suggestions are both intelligent and relevant. Mary Quintana, the owner of Shear Perfection, embodies all of these qualities. With nine years of experience under her belt, she fixed a terrible haircut that I had received two weeks prior. Not only was she efficient and quick about it, but when I walked out her door, I happened to have one of the best haircuts I had experienced in the past five years. She blew it out, styled it, and judiciously applied the correct products at different intervals throughout the styling process, not just spraying me with a cloud of hair spray at the end. She even offered to touch it up for me in the next few days if I wanted minor changes to be made or if I wasn't happy with it after I washed it. My hair remained clean with excellent movement and looked salon-fresh for THE NEXT THREE DAYS. I was ecstatic. Mary's style is to cut, dry, then refine the cut and texturize the hair when it is dry in order to maximize movement, style, and liveliness. This is a critical step that other stylists usually ignore (or don't know anything about). A few weeks after my wonderful cut, which remains so great that I hardly need to style it in order to look good, I brought my teen daughter to her. Mary's skilled hands quickly detected an excess amount of buildup on her hair. She asked us some specific questions about our hair care routine, made an assessment, and gave us expert advice on the best products and ways to keep our long hair healthy, sleek, and static-free this winter. I wish I had listened to the little voice inside my head... This place definitely had many red flags, but it's close to my work, and I was getting a little desperate for a cut so I thought I'd give it a try. I ended up with a cut that's about one inch shorter on the right side. My appointment was late in the day, and I must have been slouching in the chair, but rather than give my prior stylist the benefit of the doubt and check to make sure I was sitting up straight, she arrogantly decided that my prior cut was off by one inch. Unfortunately, I was so tormented by the blaring Christian rock music, which I found to be incredibly annoying and offensive, that it didn't occur to me that if my haircut was that crooked, I probably would have realized it someone in the last six months since I had it done. But instead, I just stupidly nodded my head and let her go to town, even though that little voice was pleading with me to just walk away. In addition to the bad cut, she criticized my hair, criticized my hairline, criticized my prior cut, which was pretty much how I had wanted it, and was very opinionated about everything. She was unable to cut my hair how I wanted it and was rather argumentative about it. Although, she offered to fix any mistakes free of charge, I don't want to trust her with my hair again after making such an amateur mistake. So I'm stuck with the option of shelling out more dough and cutting my hair shorter than I want to fix it. Yay. read more
