Amazing place for experienced Buddhists and first timers alike…read more Highly recommend coming for a Sunday service (they start at 10AM) for your first visit. Service starts with a 25 minute meditation and both mats with cushions and chairs are available for those not comfortable kneeling or sitting cross legged. During a normal Sunday service meditation is followed by chanting in English and Sino-Korean, which is the cultural background of this Sangha. Translations are provided for all chants not in English which is a nice touch. Following the chanting there is normally a Dharma talk led by the temple's head priestess. There is a nice variety to this part of the service and often there will be any number of other people who lead the discussion. From Dr. Liu, an ordained Chinese Diagnostic Monk who moved to the US and obtained his MD, to Rafe Martin, a well known story teller and author. I really appreciate the wide variety of people and topics covered in the Dharma Discussions which help make the Sunday service never feel stale. The audience is encouraged to join the discussion throughout the talk as opposed to just listening. After service, tea is served and the Sangha has a few minutes to chat before many go off into one of any number of interest groups. Covering a range of topics such as Environmental awareness, Life Transitions, to Refuge Recovery (a Buddhist inspired approach to Substance abuse recovery), there are many options for those interested in quite a few subjects. There is almost always the opportunity for work practice after service. If you enjoy gardening, helping make raisins, wood working, stuffing cushions, the list goes on.... It's a great way to meet other Sangha members and help out. (If you stay and help, most often an amazing Vegetarian lunch is available to sweeten the deal) Highly recommend checking this place out!

I came here for English Dhamma Night last month and it was great. We received instruction from one…read moreof the monks, a kindly man who smiled and taught us how to do both walking and mindfulness of the breath meditations. They reinforced multiple times that we were welcome to visit whenever and that we were never expected to provide donations; they were simply happy to have more Americans visit and learn. The monk was assisted by an American convert who helped clarify any confusion and told us how and why he came to Theravada Buddhism. He was a really nice, very polite, and incredibly friendly man and he helped us feel a lot more comfortable in a strange and new setting. The meditation center is small but very beautiful with gorgeous statues and icons. The main area, where the statue of the Buddha is located, is calm and peaceful and meditation pillows are provided to make meditating more comfortable. Overall, I had a very positive experience and I intend to go back to the next English Dhamma Night that falls on a day when I don't work in the evening. If anyone is curious about Theravada Buddhism, this is a great place to visit.

It's a good community for anyone of Chinese heritage or if you are a Westerner interested in Buddhism, Chinese culture, meditation, or yoga. I have noticed many non-Chinese people who visit Triple Crane, whether to participate in the ceremonies or to join in the delicious Chinese vegetarian meals offered there. I usually visit for major events like Chinese New Year and the Buddha Bathing Festival. I want to do a one-day meditation retreat at Triple Crane at some point. I participated in Temple Stay and meditation retreats at Buddhist temples in South Korea and enjoyed them. It's a great way to get fresh air and quiet time, which is hard to find if you live in the city.
