The Church of St. Edmund, King & Martyr (St. Edmund's) dates back to 1905 when its first services…read morewere held in a basement room at 55th Street and Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. It was known as the "Washington Park Mission". In 1906, the name was changed to "St. Edmund's Mission." Later the church moved to the second floor over the Citizens' Trust and Savings Bank building at 55th and State Street. The Mission next moved from the bank location, on Easter Sunday in 1908. The first services were held in a simple structure of stucco and brick erected at 5831 South Indiana Avenue where it continued to struggle to survive. In September 1940, St. Edmund's Mission made formal application to the Diocese of Chicago for admission as a parish. The Diocesan Convention granted this request and St. Edmund's charter was filed and approved October 12, 1940. In 1942, an addition to the Parish Hall was recommended. The then church leaders decided that a new and larger church facility was needed. By 1948, the necessary funds had been raised and with a grant from the Diocese of Chicago the former Greek Orthodox Church of St. Constantine located at 6105 South Michigan Avenue was acquired. During the period of the 1930's - 1960's, the church saw great growth in it's membership becoming the largest Episcopal parish in the city. Today the church strives to live out it's mission "to bring Christ into the lives of all God's people by aggressively spreading the Christian message to our parish family, to the larger community and to the world through worship, Christian education and community empowerment".

Wonderful Catholic community where you always feel welcome and wanted. We came out here in a light…read moresnowstorm for a Fish Fry Friday during Lent, and it was a 5 star event. Some Fish Frys just don't provide a good piece of fish, and that ruins the visit because that is the main reason for a Fish Fry Friday ... but at St. John's the fish was excellent, the sides were plentiful and well brought off, and the community feel in the basement location was a winner. Similar to many other Fish Fry Friday churches, the neighborhood school kids provide the service for delivering food to the tables ... and they did a great job. Besides the fish offering, the nicest extra was a salad bar where you could put together whatever struck your fancy, and could go back for seconds. Nice selection of desserts also, and beer and wine were available for purchase with your meal. In addition to the dine in seating where they could easily seat over a hundred people, there was a big business in to-go orders. There also was live music in one corner of the room where a two-piece mom-and-pop kept up a nice background. Parking was easy-peasy, since the church has a parking lot in back. Next Lent when you are looking for a Fish Fry Friday ... give this place a try.

The…read moreschool on the other hand keeps increasing its prices every year and Illinois residents and their children have to dish out almost $8,000 for one year. You can get $500 knocked off by doing volunteer work but not all parents are able to do that. With the yearly cost going up every year by 2028 tuition will be ,near or even over $10,000 for a year. The school doesn't have air conditioning, no central air or window units. Theres a large fan in the hallways and rooms pushing hot air around. Kids are always getting sick as my own had gotten sick atleast 3 times during a single school year. By now it's safe to say I have an issue with the price, but to dig deeper I feel the school doesn't help unlock children's full potential. Teachers don't respond to emails directly even though they tell parents to email them with any or all questions. Kids get a lot of days off these days at this school and for the amount of money that is dished out the school could've bought atleast window unit ACs for the classrooms or even central air many times over. The only upgrade the school had done was a flag pole , a small kiddy park and new heating "which breaks down all the time". I recommend private schools over public school everyday of the week but again the cost is outrageous especially when the school has gotten little to no upgrades.

I love this Church! The Oldest Mexican Parish in the city (1923), it welcomes all that come…read more Besides Mexicans, there is a diverse group of ethnicities and religions that pray there. It is the only church in the city beside Holy Name Cathedral that is open to public for practically the whole day. I discovered this church in the 1980's when I needed to find a church where I could pray for my friend who eventually died at the Taste of Chicago when he fell into the lake. I have been going there every since. Although I'm not a parishner, I still go there often because they offer so many masses. They have a lot of Sunday masses. Their last English mass on Sunday is at 4:30pm. I think there's one or two more masses in Spanish after that. I missed mass at my regular parish (St. Thomas Apostle in Hyde Park) and went to OLG's last English mass of the day with my daughter ( also named Guadalupe). The priest, to our suprise was Nigerian! I enjoyed the mass but my daughter said that she couldn't understand the preist's accent. This church gave me great comfort when I was having a very difficult pregnancy with my daughter. I came from my Chatham neighborhood and prayed there several times a week. No churches in my neighborhood or even my own parish was open during the weekday at a convienient time so I could pray. Even though OLG is originally a Mexican parish, they are very welcoming. Not " funny acting" like many non- ethnic parishes, making you feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Many various ethnicities come here. Next to my own parish, this is my most favorite church in the city!

It was started in 1974 and although it's too far for me to travel to,it's a good solid church to at least stream of not physically be present. I can only give it 4 stars as I haven't actually been to.
