The best spray tan in SF--consistently perfect results. I've been coming to Shade for about two and a half years, and they have been my absolute savior since moving to San Francisco from New York. I had a spot in NY that I went to for years and never thought I'd find a replacement I loved just as much--until I found Shade. I'm quite fair, and the team here is incredible at customizing the depth of the tan to fit the "vibe" of whatever I have coming up. Whether it's a work trip or a deeper bronze for a beach vacation, it always looks natural and never orange. The salon is adorable, welcoming, and very convenient. I had really high hopes for Shade after seeing so many positive reviews. I've only self-tanned and was really excited to try a real tanning salon. Although the experience was quick and efficient, I can definitely say it was a complete waste of $75. The tan looked pretty good once done and I made sure to follow all aftercare instructions properly. Unfortunately it faded so fast and looked like I never even got a tan done. I went to the beach 2 days later, and my friend who had self-tan was way more tanned/bronzed than I was! We were shocked. I reached out to them expressing my unhappiness and guess what... no reply! Never got a response from them. Not a happy customer, especially when I can do the same at home for a fraction of the cost for better results that actually last longer. read more

Shade is the best! I've gone multiple times now, most recently for my wedding. I got married down in LA but I wanted to do my tan here because I wanted Breanne to do my tan for my big day. This isn't my first spray tan but was my first time at Shade. The space was clean and professional. I got a quick develop tan (2-4 hours) on a Wednesday for a Fri/Sat event. They said the color I was when I left the salon was similar to the color I would be if I waited ~3 hours to rinse (no soap, luke warm water only). I followed all the pre-tan care exactly as suggested, showered 3 hours after the tan with luke warm water only and did not rub dry with a towel just gently patted. Started moisturizing the next morning to extend the tan. Thursday the tan looked wonderful, no streaks, no color buildup at joints, very even. I had the perfect mid-summer tan (first photo). Thursday evening I took a 5 min body shower before dinner. I used a mild body wash, no exfoliating products, no shaving, no scrubbing, and patted dry. By Friday morning I would say 80% of the spray tan color was gone and by Saturday you couldn't even tell I had gotten one at all (second photo). I've never had a spray tan fade/disappear this fast on my skin. These normally last at least a week on me with subtle fading - not a complete disappearance within 48 hours. Total waste of $100. I will say the girl who performed my spray tan was very nice, seemed to do a very thorough job, made me feel comfortable, and the spray experience itself was fine (hence 2 stars for her only). read more

I love this place! I've had spray tans where I walked out feeling sticky but I didn't get that here. I was able to develop my tan without any problems comfortably. I was nervous I couldn't get as dark as I wanted so I asked for the darkest shade. They told me it depends on my base color and I was very pleased with the results (see photo attached). My tan also faded very evenly. I've only been here twice but I'm looking forward to returning now that summer is here. I knew I wanted to get a spray tan for my wedding because I don't typically get a lot of sun and I didn't want to look ghostly white in a white dress. I'd only gotten one other spray tan in the past for our engagement photos in Hawaii, and while I'd really loved how that had turned out, I was unsure if I would get similar results here. Thankfully I found Breanne! She is so wonderful in MANY ways. First, she was super responsive over email and was especially accommodating when I requested an after-hours timeslot because my husband and I both work long hours. Second, she was so professional and fun to work with during the actual spray tan. It's always awkward getting butt-naked in front of a stranger, particularly since I'm four months post-partum and still getting used to my new-ish body, but she made me feel so comfortable and even helped me figure out ways to cover my nipples during the spray tan since I'm currently still breastfeeding. Finally, I loved her attention to detail, including putting vaseline? on my newly done nails so that they would not get stained and making sure to reiterate the plan for doing my first wash in order to get the perfect color that I wanted. Wow, just WOW! I've likely had over 100 spray tans with varying results and the tan I received at Shade was hands down the best! I received the 4 hour rinse rapid tan and it was perfection. My practitioner was Navi and they couldn't have been better. Thorough, detailed, professional, efficient, and fast! Navi gave detailed instructions for optimizing my tanning experience while also highlighting the beneficial differences between Shade tans and their competitors. The difference are vast! I'm a lighter skinned natural redhead but I have a lot of yellow/red/gold undertones which can make color matching difficult. I almost always look a little orange, a little too dark, or have color stain accumulation on my hands and feet..but not this time!! A little late with my review but I went to Navi back in December before going on a girl's trip to Vegas and left with the most amazing tan that lasted way longer than I expected and looked SO natural! I didn't even realize how tan I was until it wore off and I immediately looked very pale haha, it never looked orange or patchy!
