We visited Gamla Uppsala to visit the Viking burial mounds there last week when we were in Uppsala for a day. The three large mounds ("The Royal Mounds") date to the 5th and 6th centuries and were once thought to be resting places of the Norse gods the three gods Thor, Odin and Freyr. You can visit the museum, which provides helpful context when you walk around the burial mounds. It's two stories. Not huge, but not small. There are some interactive displays and everything in the museum was available in Swedish and English. Then take a walk around the mounds. It's pretty incredible to be somewhere with such history and meaning. It's well worth a visit to learn some medieval Scandinavian history!

When we visited (last day of May), it was gorgeous, with a lot in bloom. There's a cafe where you can get some ice cream and a tropical greenhouse (sadly, both closed just before we arrived), but it was wonderful just to explore the gardens. I got some great photographs of the flowers in bloom when we visited. Definitely a nice place to relax in Uppsala!

There is a greenhouse with a giant water lily and many other beautiful flowers. In summer the garden also has a nice cafe that serves lunch and tappas in the afternoon. Here you can just sit on the gras and enjoy a nice meal and have the feeling that you are sitting in your own backyard.

As an exchange student at Uppsala University, Student Nations are a godsend…read more They serve as social club sort of things that all students at Uppsala University join (unless they really don't want to). There are 13 of these nations to choose from in Uppsala. Joining one gives you access to all of them for that semester, but with special discounts at your own. Most of the nations have a pub that serves dinner, clubs every few weeks, and things like social dance, theater groups, and bands. Kalmar also has a clothes exchange, a club where you share your favorite music, and vegetarian food at their pub. They also have a nice fika on Sundays that is outside on nice Spring days. You'll get the most out of Uppsala's Nations if you're a student. If you're just stopping by, you'll need a friend who goes to Uppsala University to get you a somewhat pricey pass for the Uppsala Nations. If not, you probably won't be able to get into their pub, but you _might_ be able to sneak into fika.

Uppsala Slott/Uppsala Castle is a 16th century royal castle in Uppsala. We visited last week when…read morewe were in Uppsala for the day. The castle is home to a couple of museums - the Uppsala Art Museum and the Vasaborgen ("Vasa Fortress"), a museum in the ruins of the original foundation of the 1549 royal apartments. We didn't visit the museums, but we did climb up the hill to the castle and walked around its perimeter. I took a lot of photos of the castle and of the views from the castle. It's a great viewpoint of the whole city, so even if you don't have time to or interest in visiting the museums in the castle, it's worth a visit!

As a museum I'm not sure this is really worth a trip. It's got three foci: ancient Egypt, the…read morehistory of the university, but the pièce de la résistance is the anatomical theater that is several centuries old. The Egypt part felt fairly common place with mummies and hieroglyphs (beautiful donations by the former Queen Victoria of Sweden from her excavations) that you have seen similar of elsewhere. The building is pretty worn and could need a new coat of paint here and there. The anatomical theater is amazing since it was used for a long time at the medical school to teach gross anatomy to the students. The education was standing only allowing for many students to watch the cuts, and the organs visible.
