Medieval Scandinavians held Gamla Uppsala ("Old Uppsala") as one of the oldest and most important locations in Scandinavia. We visited Gamla Uppsala to visit the Viking burial mounds there last week when we were in Uppsala for a day. The three large mounds ("The Royal Mounds") date to the 5th and 6th centuries and were once thought to be resting places of the Norse gods the three gods Thor, Odin and Freyr. You can visit the museum, which provides helpful context when you walk around the burial mounds. It's two stories. Not huge, but not small. There are some interactive displays and everything in the museum was available in Swedish and English. Then take a walk around the mounds. It's pretty incredible to be somewhere with such history and meaning. It's well worth a visit to learn some medieval Scandinavian history! read more
