We didn't have the…read moretime or energy to do much of the available hiking, but they have several trails with varying degrees of difficulty. It was a beautiful area, green and lush, with several areas for picnicking and wading into creeks. There was a lake that people were fishing in. Several old cabins were on the property that added a fun dimension to the area. If we're ever in the area again, we might stop and take advantage of more of the hiking trails.

One of the most iconic and secure military installations [Fort Knox KY]…read more We took a little detour to see Fort Knox before heading to Mammoth Cave National Park. At the entrance we took some fun photos at the signs. I am not a military personnel and the only time I entered a military base as a civilian was in Fairfield CA many years ago at Travis AFB when my brother (US Army) was hospitalized and where he passed away. This Army installation was named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War. Fort Knox refers to the United States Bullion Depository which was a separate building from the Army base located at a far distance due to its high security. The impenetrable fortress was just a plain building but nonetheless a sight to see. When someone mentions 'Fort Knox' in a conversation or as an idiom now I can actually say I've seen it! LoL! The walking tour is accessible to people of most abilities, with a bit of uneven ground in some spots. Cool, comfortable temperatures. (Maybe have a light sweater.) Cool/interesting history of how the carven transitioned from a massive limestone mining facility that started in the 1930s, to its multiple uses today. The zip-lining looks like a lot of fun, but that was not for us on this day.

Not only is it insane that you literally are driving into a huge cavern in your own vehicle but the size of it is is ridiculous. Then add in the light shows and it's breathtaking! It's about 12-15 minutes drive at a slow pace and you have light displays from all sorts of known Disney and other companies as well as a laser light show (so be careful if that causes you any medical issues). The marker reads, "The oldest continuing Baptist congregation west of Allegheny Mts., organized June 17, 1781, near Hynes Station. Preceded by log structures, this edifice completed, 1834, by John Y. Hill. Sold to First Baptist Church, 1897, and services held until 1974, except when USA soldiers used building as hospital, 1865. Listed on National Register of Historic Places, 1974." It is marker number 1621 and it was erected in 1977 by the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Transportation.
