It's impressive to see a church with roots going back to the late 1700s, and it's considered the oldest Baptist church in Kentucky. The historical markers do a good job of explaining the church's early beginnings and its importance in the settlement of the region. Even just passing by, you can get a sense of how long this congregation has been part of the community's history. The grounds are well-kept and the modern campus contrasts interestingly with the deep historical roots of the church. It makes for a quick but meaningful stop if you're interested in local history.

The marker reads, "The oldest continuing Baptist congregation west of Allegheny Mts., organized June 17, 1781, near Hynes Station. Preceded by log structures, this edifice completed, 1834, by John Y. Hill. Sold to First Baptist Church, 1897, and services held until 1974, except when USA soldiers used building as hospital, 1865. Listed on National Register of Historic Places, 1974." It is marker number 1621 and it was erected in 1977 by the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Transportation. [This is a repost of my review from October 21 that was my 2048th review of 2024, 282nd in Kentucky and 23068 overall. Yelp removed it because I mistakenly reviewed the church instead of creating a new business for the historical marker. Mistake corrected. Here we are. There are lockers available on site to store valuables. It costs $1 for each instance and you need cash. There is a machine to turn $1 and $5 into quarters. We did the Mega Quest first, which was shockingly a huge workout. The employees were cheerful, helpful and explained everything clearly. We worked up a crazy sweat and rested in time for our Mega Ziplines tour. We got Keegyn and Bethany, who were absolutely amazing. We were in GREAT hands! I'm actually terrified of heights but I was very proud of myself for getting through each zip line and keeping my eyes open! The Mega Ziplines course does have options for people to leave if they are too scared/anxious, but there IS a point of no return eventually. This was one hell of a way to spend a day out in some caves. Highly recommend.

Great professional staff and safety is their #1 priority. Located right in the city, just a short drive to get there. This is the most open cavern I have ever been in and you almost feel like you are in a dark warehouse, it's so big! No "tight" spaces of any kind. Heights might be your issue if that is a concern. If you have any climbing, repelling, spelunking, or exploring experience, this is a "walk in the park" for you. No experience is needed and they take care of everything. All you have to do is zip when you're told. Have fun! Shoutout to Bethany M., an excellent staff member.

John Hunt Morgan's Raiders arrived in Elizabethtown on December 27, 1862, appearing on the brow of the hill that is now the City Cemetery. The main objective of the Christmas Raid was to burn two huge Louisville and Nashville Railroad trestles at Muldraugh Hill north of the town. By destroying the trestles, Morgan hoped to relive pressure on Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army in Tennessee by cutting the flow of supplies to Union Gen. William S. Rosecrans' army. Before moving on Muldraugh Hill, Morgan wanted to neutralize the Union force in Elizabethtown. The Confederates placed artillery on the hill and demanded the surrender of the Union garrison. They refused and Morgan's artillery opened fire. The bombardment lasted twenty minutes; 107 rounds were fired upon the buildings in the town killing and wounding several of the soldiers who had taken refuge there." Interesting history. Stop by, take a look. There is parking in the square. [Review 20203 overall - 236 in Kentucky - 1180 of 2023.]

The square used to be the center of life in the town, with the park benches in front and around the courthouse where folks use to sit and pass along the news of the town. Over the years the square has undergone many changes and refurbishments. There is a beautiful old statue of Abraham Lincoln that I believe is a copy of the one from his memorial in Washington DC. In more modern times they have placed a newer statue of a young Lincoln, this statue however has has not had good luck, it has been taken out twice by reckless drivers. Currently it is awaiting repairs from its most recent mishap with another bad driver. The old local library now serving as the women's club anchors one corner of the area and Laha's Red Castle is right beside it. And if you haven't eaten there you must do it at least once in your life. Although currently they are only serving takeaway and just another storefront down is a barbershop that has been there as long as I can remember and as long as my father could remember. Opposite is the sweet shoppe where you can get some great fudge or ice cream. Lots to do on the old square be sure and stop and give it a visit when you pass through Hodgenville.

This public square is located in the center point of a roundabout in downtown at the Hodgenville's Commercial Historic District. While here you could also visit the Lincoln Museum which is also in this area, unfortunately, we didn't make it and they were already closed by the time we arrived. At the Lincoln Square there is a bronze presidential statue of Abraham Lincoln that has been welcoming folks since 1909. A statue on the opposite end stood of him as a boy reading from Webster's Elementary Spelling-Book with his dog, Honey. This is a nice tribute to the 16th President of the United States. Just be careful crossing to get to that middle because cars just zoom like crazy in that roundabout. Lincoln Square is a National Register of Historic Places destination. Review #3923
