So much fun, if you have a big group, make sure to bring some rope so that you can tie all of your tubes together, so you don't flood away from each other. I absolutely love it here, sometimes there's the occasional inconsiderate humans that will try and ruin it for you, but there's plenty of places to move to to get away from them. Water is cold.

What a beautiful river and park! It was clear clean and cold! There is also no entry fee! Came on a hot day for my friends birthday. We put out tube in and went on our way. A few things to point out; this river is very marsh like and clearly hasn't been maintained use caution as we were stuck in a grassy area and spot various animals in the water including a snake and turtle, I recommend bringing a paddle as this would have allowed us to get our tube unstuck and kept us away from the animals in the water. This is also your standard Texas river the bottoms do have rocks and other objects I recommend shoes, as well as strong swimmers as the current is quite strong and there are some deep areas where feet dong touch the ground, also aren't any lifeguards. We were pushed pretty far down river and found ourselves really far from starting area but luckily a sweet women driving the van from top to bottom noticed us walking with our large tube and gave us a ride back to our car! I had a great time I wish I'd taken more photos

San Marcos River in the heart of Texas State.

Sewell Park, My favorite San Marcos river hangout is a very popular destination on the Texas State University campus. Whether you want to swim in the always 72 degree crystal clear Aquarena Springs fed water or just relax on the grassy lawns. They've got tube rentals, grills, tables, volleyball, basketball, and the one and only Frisbee Dan!! For those that haven't been informed, Frisbee Dan is the cool older gent that hangs out in Sewell Park covered in White Zinc Oxide. At first he appears to be lounging in his chair, feet propped up on a cooler and jamming to his jukebox but rest assure if you say hi and signal like you want to throw a frisbee he will not let you down. This San Marcos icon has been living the life since the 80s and I pray to God he sticks around as long as possible. Live Long Frisbee Dan!

Best place to relax. I love the river and playing volleyball or even throwing a football around. This place is great!

Definitely a nice park with a nice view, but during the school year, it's always crowded with students

Love Sewell park but wish little kids would stop crowding up this park which is for Texas State students and faculty only.

Well, congrats, you just found that place via Yelp. John Stokes park is wedged between farmland on the other side of I35, down the narrow and unsuspecting Cape street. Even on a Sunday, the park wasn't so busy that there was nowhere to sit or have to ourselves, and the people there made a comfortable mix of college kids, adults, and families. The best part of the park is the 30ft high, man-made waterfall that drops into a sort of cove. A perfect touch. Chances are, you'll see fearless kids flipping from the falls into the water below, which is at least a sight to see, if you are not the daredevil type. There are also park benches here for eating, drinking, or talking. If you live here in town, forget the Sewell Park swimsuit competition. Forget the Cheatam Street theme park crowd. John Stokes state park is the best place to experience and enjoy the San Marcos river. Tip: Much of this river park is tree-lined, so if you need direct sunlight to enjoy swimming in the cool river water, visit around noon when the sun is overhead.

If you want to get away from the noise of the city for a while, I highly recommend this quaint park. I spent several hours here and only saw a couple of people. The trails are great. For a nice walk and/or take a pet. Although it's requested to clean up after yourself, I was disappointed to see trash. There's a small free parking lot (gravel) at the beginning of that particular entrance.

However it's developed a bit of an off leash dog program. There's poop left everywhere, and dogs running loose despite the numerous environmental issues caused by off leash dogs, the citywide leash las, and the rule stated on the front sign. I even saw someone who let their cats run loose the other day who asked me to avoid a large section of the park with my (leashed) dogs. I would have been happy to, provided they were also leashed. And of course the people who let their dogs off leash aren't concerned about other people in the park so they'll yell and curse at you if you ask them to call their dog or try to defend yourself from a strange dog barreling at you across the field. It's happened several times. I bring my dogs on a long line and they get to run around and explore to their hearts content without increasing erosion, lowering biodiversity, or being rude to other park goers. The city really needs to take some responsibility for enforcing responsible pet ownership laws.
