I first started out going to the 11:30 am mass and loved it. It does fill up but not so much to where you can't breathe. Its comfortable. My first time there, I was blown away by Fr. Duffel. He is a gem! His homilies are relatable and never judgmental, which is so rare to find. He ends each one with the question, "Do you believe in this Christ Jesus? Do you struggle to live accordingly to his way?" At the end of mass for announcements, before the final blessing is given, I call it Fr. Duffel's comedy minute. He asks where the new people are from, cracks a small joke, and then happily welcomes everyone to Ascension. I felt so loved just being asked where I was from and knowing that this church really did not deny anyone. This church likes to drink and have a good time too, which is really funny and perfect. Mimosas on the first Sunday of the month, Martini Wednesday, and wine, beer, etc in between. They understand the importance of community and making people feel part of the church. The biggest surprise was that they have weekly potlucks with the LGBT community. This made me so happy to know that this church really fights to not close its doors to anyone and not make judgement no matter. I have recently migrated to the 6:00 pm mass which is a whole different vibe with the jazz duo. Let me just say that the jazz duo steals my heart every time and just makes the church all that much better. The man on the bass looks like Eric Clapton but sounds Michael Buble. If you ever have time to stop by this mass, I encourage it because it is a blessing. Ascension Catholic Church is simply the best and I am so thankful that this church is making a lot steps in the right direction.

Not sure if they did this because it was convenient or if they were trying to stick with the film theme; hopefully the former. I didn't recognize any of the songs they sung during worship time. I keep up with my worship music so I'm not sure why they feel like they have to use all their own songs. It would have been nice if they sung some more familiar songs. Worship is very "Hillsongs" style--put way too many hyperactive vocalists up there with a handful of instrumentalists. If you like that style, that's great for you, but it was way over the top for me. It seemed like everyone was an extrovert. The service was extremely uncomfortable for a more reserved, introvert like me. I really don't mean to have this review sound so negative; all I want to say is that it wasn't for me.

I'll never forget it: I was welcomed by an usher who gave me the kind of hug that said, "You're home now." No side-eyes, no judgment--just love, warmth, and a seat in a beautiful space where I could experience the service at my own pace (and catch my breath from walking through Times Square--because whew). The music? Absolutely incredible. The choir will have you praising, swaying, and maybe even forgetting you're wearing those new shoes that weren't made for dancing. It's joyful, powerful, and real--and you don't need to know the words to feel the Spirit. Services are held at 10 AM and 1 PM, so whether you're an early bird or the kind who needs that second cup of coffee (no judgment--I've been both), there's room for you. And yes--they even have discounted parking if you get your ticket stamped. Because even in New York, Jesus is still helping you save. From programs for children to ministries for adults, the church is full of life, love, and purpose. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It's a place where people grow, laugh, cry, heal--and worship together. So if you're looking for a church that feels like family, sounds like heaven, and welcomes you just as you are--come through. You just might leave with a full heart, a new friend, and a joyful song stuck in your head all week.

The Church of St. Catherine of Siena is a true oasis of calm in the middle of New York City. I…read moreespecially appreciate the sense of serenity here--it's the kind of place where you can step inside and feel peaceful. The convenient 30-minute weekday Mass makes it especially welcoming for anyone trying to fit prayer into a busy workday. This parish has a rich and meaningful history, deeply connected to the Dominican Friars, who have served the neighborhood since the late 19th century. Today, the church is part of the combined parish of St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Catherine of Siena, still ministered to by the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph. Their presence gives the parish a thoughtful, intellectual, and deeply prayerful character. Architecturally, the church is stunning and quite unique for New York City. Completed in 1931 and designed by Wilfrid E. Anthony, it's a rare example of Arts and Crafts style in a house of worship. Inside, Gothic brick arches create intimate spaces for shrines, and the stained-glass windows are beautiful and distinctive, with rich blues, yellows, and reds that feel both modern and reverent. The magnificent design above the high altar is particularly striking. I also love knowing that the church's layout--and even the park across the street--were inspired by Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, where St. Catherine of Siena is buried. The parish's mission is equally impressive. Located near major hospitals like Weill Cornell and Memorial Sloan Kettering, the church has a special ministry supporting healthcare workers, patients, and families, which feels especially fitting given St. Catherine of Siena's role as patron saint of those who heal the sick. Daily Mass, confession, and a strong commitment to prayer--including Eucharistic adoration--make this a spiritually rich and welcoming place. Whether you're visiting for worship, reflection, or simply a moment of peace, St. Catherine of Siena is a beautiful and meaningful church that truly stands out.

Founded in 1823 as a breakaway from Trinity Church, it was the first Episcopal parish in New York City to be formed by members of three other churches. The current building is the fourth church on the site; the first was built in 1823, and the third was destroyed by fire in 1905. The present Gothic Revival structure was designed by Ralph Adams Cram and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and completed in 1914. It was consecrated on April 25, 1916 and is dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle. The nave rises 95 feet (29 m) high, with a 214-foot-long and 100-foot-wide interior.
