While walking up on Fifth Avenue towards Central Park, we stopped by Saint Thomas. Today was the Feast of Candlemas which commemorates Mary and Joseph bringing the child Jesus to be presented to the Lord in the Temple. While inside the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, a choral ensemble comprising men and boys were practicing to perform music for their Anglican worship service. Incorporated on January 9, 1824, this parish church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and designed in the French High Gothic Revival.

Outstanding! This is one of those church buildings that you would never expect to find in a) America, b) New York State and c) sitting in the heart of Manhattan on 5th and 53rd. I am not a very religious guy by any stretch of the imagination however, I totally appreciate that a house of worship should convey a sense of awe and mystery on the folks who go there to worship - the church of St.Thomas does exactly that. Built entirely of stone on a magnitude that I haven't imagined was ever done outside of Europe, this church defies words - you have to see it for yourself. The reredos sculpture sitting in the Apse is something to behold - as are the ceilings (95 feet straight up) and the fact that the place is built entirely of stone; with no metal frame. Toss in three awesome pipe organs and you have something that rivals St. Pats down the street, yet is totally accessible to everyone. Definitely something you should see if only to marvel at the architecture or for those of you who wish to attend a service there.

I love how this church makes me feel. I have only been inside twice but no services were going on. I lit a candle and prayed and literally was overcome with emotion. I could really feel the presence of God with me in this breathtakingly beautiful church. I was raised Baptist and my boyfriend is Catholic so for years we have taken turns going to each other's church. For me, it really is not about what religion we are..its about our own personal spiritual path. This church is Anglican and since I have been back from my trip, I have tuned in to some of their services via webcast on their website. The day I went in, the organist was playing and I could have sat in that church all day. There was such a peace in my heart. I was so glad I went in before heading back out to the busy streets of NYC. This church really made an impression on me!

This is the most beautiful Church I have ever seen in my life. WOW! The details in the structure is truly breathtaking! If you are in NY you must stop in for a visit. Even if you are not attending the services, the church is open for the public to stop in and look around. I must say, you just got take a seat to take it all in! You can also light a candle and say a small prayer.

The meticulously and marvelous detailed High Altar

Honestly, I didn't have this on my travel plan and didn't realize this church's existence until I walked by the beautiful doorway. Being a fan of church architecture, I was curious about this impressive church. After walking into the building, I was glad that I did not miss the beauty within. Because this is not even listed as a tourist attraction unlike St. Patrick's Cathedral, St. Thomas Church has only a praying crowd. The quiet inside was certainly a huge contrast to the bustling 5th Avenue. I almost felt bad walking in, making so much noises despite my effort to silence my footsteps! In the main church, the whole space was dark except for the High Altar where all the lights were concentrated to focus all prayers at that point. Aside from the extricate gateway outside, the High Altar was perhaps the only point of attention inside and it deserved to be! Walk closely without disturbing the praying people and marvel at the meticulously and marvelously detailed artwork. Of all the churches I have been to, I don't think I have seen this level of details at this magnitude yet. St. Thomas Church lacked the wow-factor that St. Patrick's Cathedral or Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine has, but because it is not a tourist attraction (yet), expect the level of serenity that is rare in the bustling New York City. Especially if you are planning to visit the nearby MoMA, take advantage of this rare serenity to both admire the beautiful High Altar and take a breather from the city vibe.

We came to hear La Nativité Du Seigneur played by Daniel Hyde on the new Miller Scott organ. The most stunning Olivier Messiaen piece I have heard to date and the new pipe organ many years in the works exceeded our expectations. It's difficult to comprehend the finely tuned craftsmanship is must take to build an instrument of this magnitude. The impossibly sonorous voices embodied within. D. Hyde's performance was hair raisingly moving and expressive. Go and hear him before he goes back to England next fall! The building is bejeweled with vivid stained glass windows. It's not as crowded as the other churches in this neighborhood.

The church is wonderful inside and out! i will not give out under 5 stars, because I will not explain to god why I gave his house low stars. Anyway, pull out your SLR and take some beautiful photos.

Amazingly beautiful church and absolutely magnificent men and boys choir. The Carlo Tunesi organ recital is marvelous.

Lovely building! A photographers heaven! It's funny how it's tucked in between all the high end shopping on 5th, but worth the stop. Check out the main doors! WOW!

I'll never forget it: I was welcomed by an usher who gave me the kind of hug that said, "You're home now." No side-eyes, no judgment--just love, warmth, and a seat in a beautiful space where I could experience the service at my own pace (and catch my breath from walking through Times Square--because whew). The music? Absolutely incredible. The choir will have you praising, swaying, and maybe even forgetting you're wearing those new shoes that weren't made for dancing. It's joyful, powerful, and real--and you don't need to know the words to feel the Spirit. Services are held at 10 AM and 1 PM, so whether you're an early bird or the kind who needs that second cup of coffee (no judgment--I've been both), there's room for you. And yes--they even have discounted parking if you get your ticket stamped. Because even in New York, Jesus is still helping you save. From programs for children to ministries for adults, the church is full of life, love, and purpose. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It's a place where people grow, laugh, cry, heal--and worship together. So if you're looking for a church that feels like family, sounds like heaven, and welcomes you just as you are--come through. You just might leave with a full heart, a new friend, and a joyful song stuck in your head all week.

It's very convenient too! The choir has many positivity and love towards the music since they are professional singers. That shows how much passion they have for the church, god and the community. They are also LGBTQ+ friendly too which is also great! The church made me feel motivated about the faith itself and I definitely recommend coming here!

I've always had a special appreciation for the architecture of Catholic churches, and the craftsmanship here is truly remarkable! The high vaulted ceilings, stained glass, and intricate details make it feel both grand and peaceful at the same time. Even though it sits right in the middle of the city, the moment you step inside there's a sense of calm that almost feels grounding. It can get busy but you can still find quiet moments to sit, reflect, or simply admire the beauty of the space.

Probably not the best day to visit, but since I'd already pre-paid for the self-guided audio tour, I decided to brave the crowds and go. I want to be clear - St. Patrick's is beautiful. But my three star review is really about the tour experience, and my experience may have been worse than it would have been on a less busy weekend. The self-guided audio tour is $20. You can do it on your phone or on an iPad they'll provide you at the cathedral. However, especially on a crowded day, the tour was confusing. There was weirdly no way to cross from the north side of the cathedral to the south side of the cathedral. You had to in the door on the north side to see that side and then back out and in the door on the south side of the cathedral to see that side. There were may roped off areas that were on the audio tour. Probably half of the stops on the audio tour were behind roped off areas - I didn't know if I was supposed to get access to them or not. The staff at the cathedral - who I'm sure were overwhelmed by the crowds (I was!) - weren't helpful. One security guard member of staff saw my confusion and tried to help me. He opened the ropes and let me over to the other side. He told me to ask someone to do that again when I was ready to see the other side of the cathedral. But when I asked, the response was a pretty unfriendly "you have to go outside and come back in." Maybe my experience was worse than usual because of my bad timing. But I can't recommend the audio tour. $20 for an audio tour on your phone - and one where half of the stops aren't accessible to you - is too much. I suggest popping in, looking around, and leaving them whatever is a reasonable donation to you. (Note: The reason I wanted to visit St. Patrick's Cathedral was to see the new mural in the cathedral's narthex. I had read about it in the Times and wanted to see it in person. The mural - painted by Brooklyn-based artist Adam Cvijanovic and titled "What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding" - is 25 feet tall and spans several walls. It features the 1879 Apparition at Knock, saints, and modern immigrant processions. It's beautiful and thought-provoking and definitely worth a visit. Pop in and drop a donation in the box.)

The alter has been brought down to the center of the beautiful historic building. The parishioners sit in a semi circle around the alter. The priests and chorus are behind. I was on the side today but felt included. The mass is modern and prayers for everything and everyone. If you want something/someone included during mass you just fill out a paper and let them know. The mass is simple. The responses are sung. I enjoy the chorus. My friend is in the chorus. In fact my family has attended this church in the past. I've got a lot of musicians in my family that made their living playing orchestra in the shows. But that's another story! The church design and decor are so beautiful. There are a lot of angels painted on the the walls. They do not mind picture taking. I'll go back for service and take pictures of the Angels I'm sure!! I see people of every age, elderly, middle age, people in work uniforms, small children, college age, teens and expectant mothers. You name it everyone is covered. They have plenty of room for strollers to be wheeled in the back. Parents walk and rock to quiet babies during service. I find their dedication to attend mass inspiring. Dress is not important. I saw one girl in zebra print work out pants. What I'm trying to say is, this is not an elitist church like some I attend. It's not a wealthy Parrish I'm sure.
