this tied arch bridge is not remarkable in any way except that it more gracefully spans the Mississippi near the Quad Cities than the Fred Schwengel Memorial bridge which is literally just a slab. Clocking in about 4200 feet long and 60 feet above the Mississippi the bridge is part of an odd situation for the two-digit interstate numbering system as I-280 continues straight off I-80 from the east without bank or berm or abutment; it's just more road where I-80 strangely connects to I-80 via ramps...
Filler: Ordinarily a third digit prepends the route number to indicate a by-pass / loop (even) or spur (odd) but both of the E-W routes "terminate" when completing the circuit around the Quad Cities: east bound then south then ramps -or- west bound then north then ramps so neither is really a continuous path. a funner solution would be calling the whole thing I-280 loop and dropping the I-80 designation entirely for the dozen or so miles through town because the interstate highway system is primarily paperwork at this point.
...but this review is about the bridge... read more
I've crossed this bridge numerous times going through Iowa. If you drive over this bridge at night, it isn't too scenic and you get a subpar view of the Mississippi River during the day. Decent amount of traffic. Solid standing structure too. Overall, just a typical bridge. read more
