I received a full service gift certificate for this spa and must admit I was a bit concerned simply because I am used to the spas I frequented on the NY. Well this concerns quickly melted away! If you like a skin rub with lots of shaking to the point where you are dizzy then this is the place for you! I, however, had scheduled a deep tissue massage which was far from that. As she was seemingly about to be finished with my back/shoulders (my problem area) I did say something about the knots in my back and asked if she could work on the trigger points but she seemed confused so I asked if she knew what a trigger point was. Her reply was "no" so I just said never mind. She did however go back to the areas I pointed at and did put a lot of effort and deep pressure into it but she was still just rolling over my large knots which hurt like a B! She did not even do my neck when I was facing up although when facing up the massage seemed better and deeper even though the sheet was over me. Maybe it was bc my skin didn't hurt anymore from being rubbed. To start I wasn't even introduced to my massage therapist. I was told to get undressed and she would be in. She just came in and started massaging aka pushing me around and moving super fast. Despite having a 90 min massage it just felt like she was rushed the entire time, from the moment she started. She was NOT trying to feel my muscles she was just moving her hands so fast that it was shaking me and making me dizzy. Also she definitely massaged my spine a few times with her forearm which didn't exactly feel good and pretty sure could've injured someone with back problems. Also massaged over my shoulder blade many times which didn't hurt as much just have never seen bones massaged but that's bc she was just rubbing the skin over it so it didn't really hurt. The owner Frank was very accommodating and friendly but the whole thing felt very shady beyond that. I definitely would not return or recommend it to anyone. You're better off saving your money even if you are sore as you will probably be more sore when you leave seeing she didn't seem to have taken an anatomy class to know the difference of a bone or a muscle. read more

Went up to the Poconos for a weekend girls trip and decided to get a massage because why not? You're on vacation. I went with my friend. We were greeted at the door by a very friendly gentleman. Turns out his name is Frank and he ended up being the one to give me my massage. We initially wanted the hot stone massage but apparently that had been really popular that day and we were told that they could not guarantee that the stones would be hot enough for us and recommended something else...ended up going with the aromatherapy. Apparently the most popular scent is lavender but I picked the sweet orange. Glad I did. It smelled absolutely heavenly. I told Frank at the front desk that even though I love scents sometimes strong ones give me a headache. I appreciated his attention to detail because he said he used less of the oil in the head and neck area for this reason. I liked the heated bed, made the experience more comfortable. Frank Gave a good strong massage and definitely gave me the full 60 minutes. Spent a lot of time on the knots near my right shoulder. (He's a little chatty but pleasantly so). He even massaged my forehead and temples...I really wasn't expecting that and had I known, would have made sure not to wear makeup. The price was pretty decent. I'm not sure where to begin. I have been getting professional massages, from a myriad of practitioners for 30+ years. I was trying to book online, but was not getting a receipt, but was allowed to book time. I am sure it was my fault. When I called them the day before, I got a man whom was the business owner. He was very short with me. almost snapping at me. "You did not book, if you booked, you would get a confirmation! You didn't book online!" Ok, that should have been a sign. I stayed calm, I am from the west coast and have a calm demeanor. I just said, "That's why I am calling to see if it went through, and if not can you schedule me?" Again, he was an intense guy. We found a time that worked. I said, "The appointment was supposed to be with Julie, is that possible?" I confirmed I wanted a shiatsu appointment. He said. "That's my wife. yay you can have Julie". Ok, I thanked him and I came to my appointment like he said, a half hour early. Well, I showed up plenty early, but when I was lead to the massage room. a woman came in, I asked her name. She said her name was Cindy. Older woman, dressed kind of fancy with a lot of makeup. Hummm... She certainly was not julie. I confirmed I was there for Shiatsu. She just said yes. (Note, I had 3 professional Shiatsu massages pior). "Cindy" if that is her name, never asked me ANY questions, odd. She also proceed to pull off my bra. Very awkward and not necessary for a shiatsu massage!! She was loose with the draping, and that is inappropriate!! Clothing can be left on for this massage, not sure why she was doing that. This message is better done on a floor mat. Cindi started jamming me in the back with her elbow hard. Owch. She was moving fast and just jamming her elbow in random places, hard and fast. I was telling her it hurt. It wasn't like she was pressing a trigger point. She was moving way too fast and randomly just jabbing me hard. I am use to palming and finger pressure and yes elbows can work if it is strategic pressure place, but the speed and just random poking, (not shiatsu) and sometimes she hit a bone!!. I could tell she had no in depth massage training. Did I mention She got on top of the table sitting on me and started pressing her knee into my back, using tons of weight. It was so painful. not even holding, to pull and stretch, just jamming it into random spots. I had to stop her!!!! I was done. My muscles were so sore, and she was making it worse. I had to leave. There was no stretching or holding points in strategic places. Shiatsu is about flow, not random jabs. It is about pressure, but slow and strategic. Yes about using your weight, to open up meridian points. I would bet she did not have a massage certification in Shiatsu. I would never go back. I would not pay $10 for this nightmare let alone $80. read more

We had a very disappointing experience at Serenity last night. Our massages started late, ended early, and were of lackluster quality. More specifically: we booked ahead for a couples 60-minute deep tissue massage at 6pm. After filling out our form, we waited 20 minutes to be called back to the couples room. Our massages started at 620pm. As for the actual massages, neither was anything close to "deep tissue" in style. My wife really enjoyed her Swedish massage - 2 stars for that! - but mine was the worst I've had in 20 years of massages. My therapist seemed to have no idea what she was doing: inconsistent pressure, constantly pushing on bones, zero focus on the areas I'd highlighted. They then ended our massages at 715pm after 55 minutes, which felt particularly cheap as they'd begun so late. Very disappointing experience overall. read more

There were no pleasant aromas of a high end massage parlor , and they didn't provide slippers or a robe ..if you're looking for a massage parlor of a cruise ship experience for example , you will not receive that here . Highlights for the tldr crew: PROS - quaint, convenient location - pleasant employees - on the cheap end for the Poconos CONS - excessively late for scheduled appointment - hot stone couple massages light on stones, heavy on high speed and pain! - you get what you pay for (and then some, as gratuity is all but mandatory) *** I should start by mentioning that the location is super convenient, the decor and ambience were attractive and serene, and the employees were nothing but endearing and sweet. I can honestly say that if I were rating everything BUT the actual massage, this would be a four star review (minus one star for having to wait 40 minutes after my appointment time, booked well in advance). However, the entire reason my partner and I visited was to enjoy our massages, and neither of us did. We've had hot stone massages on other vacations and left on Cloud 9, feeling like warm, sweet-smelling, buttery noodles. This time we left feeling worse for the wear and primed for battle! To her credit, the person working on my partner did repeatedly ask her if she hurt and was okay. Since my partner has very ticklish feet, I'd assumed the flinching I heard was related to that until we talked about it afterward. Both of us were more sore after the massage than we were before, despite paying far more than we would have had we stayed in NYC and bought a couple of Groupons. As for my personal experience, I was *not* asked how I felt throughout the duration of the massage. No more than 15 of the 60 total minutes actually utilized the hot stones (and I believe I'm being quite generous here); the majority of the time they rested on my spine, creating an unnerving--albeit not altogether intolerable--burning sensation. I spent the majority of my hour waiting: for the tension-melting magic of the hot stones; for the massage to slow to a relaxing pace; for the painful pressure to become pleasurable. If anything, the longer I waited, the worse things became. From what I could tell, the person working on me alternated between pushing against my hips and shoulder blades with the heels of her hands and digging down into the fleshier parts in between with her fingertips. THAT ISH HURT. I was temporarily relieved once I heard the clattering of the stones--that is, until my back was assaulted at turbo speed with what felt like an angry pizza wheel! It felt as though she rubbed the stones into my back on their edges like an eraser or a dull knife (as opposed to cupping them flat in her palms and gliding them along my skin, as I have come to expect). I spent the last 10 minutes of the massage grimacing, clenching and unclenching my fists, and waiting for it to end. This spa's professionalism seems to stop short of the quality of the actual services, and for better or for worse, we were lulled into trusting that they knew what they were doing and letting them do their jobs--at the expense of the comfort of our backs for the duration of our vacation. (Of note: as of 11/14/2017--three days since the service--my partner says she's still in pain. As for me, I'm experiencing twinges in certain positions here and there. Note also that, for what it's worth, my partner did see a sign saying all their employees are professionally certified.) To add insult to (literal) injury, I was explicitly asked for a tip after completing the initial transaction. I saw that the credit card receipt didn't have a space to write one in and figured it was for the best. The person who worked on me actually stopped me and, after I said I wasn't carrying cash, asked me to charge it to another, separate credit card transaction, even trying for twice the amount I offered (once each for both my partner's and my massages...really??). Despite her beating the ish out of my back, I'd planned to leave a little something if for nothing other than their friendliness, but I found her running me down for it to be tacky and crass. Bottom line: if you do decide to spend your (excessive) time and money here, don't be too polite to complain about the amateurish massage you'll inevitably receive, as they certainly won't be too polite to ask you to pay for it above and beyond its value. read more

I was really pleased with Serenity Spa. The staff was very welcoming and good at what they do. I did the 30min body and 30min foot massage and I swear I was on another planet because the woman who massaged me had to tap me to wake up! I felt so relaxed once she was done. They gave my boyfriend, mother, and I bottles of water while we waited for our rooms. The music was nice and peaceful and the place was beautifully decorated yet simple. The one thing that was a bit of a turn off was that the tenants upstairs had kids running that you can hear very clearly, BUT that quickly stopped and it still did not take away from my wonderful experience here. I will definitely be coming back and using Serenity Spa over those snobby massage places that charge you an arm and a leg for something that felt like a toddler giving a massage. read more

She spent extra time on my upper back, which I always like, and my neck, where I've been having some recent issues.
