My daughter broke her humerus and elbow as per Xray, we were in the ER for 6 hours and sent home with a sling and was told to make an appt on monday to see a specialist somewhere in Fairfax, this was a friday night. We didn't see a doctor the whole time only the NP (she's nice), by the way I did call before we drove to Sentara and they told me there's a doctor in the ER. My daughter is still in pain of course. I was expecting that they will put a cast on the broken arm for better immobilization but we didn't even see a doctor, maybe my expectation of Sentara ER is too high. The next day we went to Children's Hospital and they put a cast and she's feeling much better, pain is better controlled. Moving forward if you want great result, go to a more reputable place. This is our second visit since its closest to us, both experience did not have good result, we ended up going to a different place to solve our medical issues. Thursday at 5pm. No one in the waiting room. We got checked in immediately for a toddler that needs stitches. Then took 45 minutes for a Dr to come and say "she needs stitches". Uh, we know that, we told you that. They numb the area and said "it'll vee ready in twenty minutes and we'll be back" one hour later and I'm running agree nurses asking when the Dr will be back, if the numbing is going to wear off, telling them the toddler is getting fussy and the movie we started to entertain her when we got here is almost done. It wasn't busy. There weren't a lot of patients, I saw our Dr walking around and shooting the breeze when age should've come in and started on the stitches. The toddler had several panic attacks, even with the movie. She started crying, she didn't want to be here, where is the Dr (how bad is it if the 4 year old is asking where the Dr is? ) enter screaming and kicking once the procedure is occurring and the Dr is short with me when I try to calm her down. I was involved in a car accident in April and visited this ER. I gave them all the information to bill the auto insurance. Afterwards I kept receiving letters from the auto insurance saying that Sentara would not send them the information they needed to pay the bill. For instance the address of the facility I came to. Really?!! They finally got what they needed and paid the ER bill. There check cleared August 27. I receive a warrant of debt taped to the front door of my home for the same bill. It was prepared 9/22 per the date on the warrant. This kind of thing is more than wrong. These huge companies get away with too much. They ruin our credit and could cost you your job. Dr Micheal Schutzler had the worse bedside manner. In my research I found out that he is in a leadership role. I came in in pain and he treated me like the scum of the earth. I'm not a regular. My doctor told me to go to the ER if I developed any pain post procedure. I did just that. This MD asked me, " what do you want me to do?" And then had nerve to tell me after getting my history " We don't do hysterectomies here". Sir you really need to use your listening ears. Access your patients, verify the history and treat accordingly. Not everyone is seeking. Some people really need medical attention. Not one time did I ask for anything other than for you to reach out to my doctor to devise a plan of care. #extremely_disappointed. read more

This is my go-to stop for if we are in need of an ER. Downside is they don't always have everything one they need on staff to address your health concerns: x-ray, sonograms, etc, especially at night. They are quick for the most part and have been great with my kids when I have had to take them in. Their staff seems to be better than the main hospital. read more

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, this is my first review on yelp ever or even visiting this site ever but many people told me that this can make a change so I wanted to talk about the horrible patient attendance here at this Sentara and wow I couldn't even believe how rude some of these nurses can be and doctors don't even take the time out of there day to discuss what you can do to get better basically all this place is good for is to figure out what's wrong with you but curing wise then I might as well go online myself and find what can make me feel better. Absolutely astonished at how horrible my experience was here. Thank You Hope someone that can make a change gets to see this. Extremely slow. Not that I expect expedient medical service when I make a doctor's visit, but for an emergency facility that wasn't busy at the time, this was utterly ridiculous. After being admitted and tests were run, I went without seeing someone for over an hour. When I made an inquiry with the nurse about where the physician on staff was, I was given a lackluster answer which equated to "I don't know". If you can venture to another facility when in a medical bind, do yourself a favor and do just that. Save yourself the added stress and aggravation. read more

Went here for emergency on Thursday. It was fast check in but waited little bit after check in. I understand that this place is better and faster then Potomac Sentra. This visit our main nurse was great. But the other nurse who was sitting down and when I asked her for ice packed she had this look on her face like really u r asking for an ice pack. Haha. Also when I asked her few more questions she didn't want to answer she got mad. So I said I'm sorry and she busted walked away and said what ever. Wth!!!!! Like I was bothering her from playing candy crush or something!! Maybe I should have left her at her desk and not asked her to get up for ice pack. I suffer chronic migraines and on Friday, January 19th, 2018, I had one that I could not relieve with the medications that my doctor had prescribed, plus I had been vomiting non stop. I finally got to the point where I just couldnt stand it any more so I had my neighbor take me to the Sentara Lake Ridge ER. When we arrived I was at the check in desk when due to exhaustion (I assume) I fell to the floor. When I got to a room they immediately did an EKG. None of the staff introduced themselves and after they took the test they left and said a nurse would be in shortly. The only person who came in real fast was the patient representative to get my insurance information. Well the nurse finally came in about 45 minutes later an again she did not introduce herself and had a very bad attitude. She very rudely asked my history ( she acted like I was bothering her) and then said the doctor would be in shortly (I think they really like using that word). The doctor came in about 1/2 hour later again didnt introduce himself just asked what the problem was. I told him that I had taken three injectable shots for my headache and I had been vomiting and my headache just wouldnt go away. (Side note: I was in a head on collision in July so I was worried something was wrong), plus I had just fallen in their waiting room. All he said was I just needed some reglan and pepcid. They gave me the medicines and all of a sudden I started to have an allergic reaction to one of the meds, (shaking very badly) so my neighbor tries to find the nurse and she didnt come in until about 15 minutes later and said she would tell the doctor, I was literally shaking so bad my neighbor had to hold me down. When the doctor finally came in all he said was give her some benadryl and then left. He didnt bother to come back to see if I was dead or alive, or order any other tests. And to top it off, his shift was over so he left and didnt bother to tell me that another doctor was taking over. That doctor never came in my room. They didnt even tell me that my blood pressure was way too high, my neighbor told me by reading the blood pressure machine! When the nurse decided to come back, she said that I was being discharged without even being seen by the new doctor. I didnt even sign or receive any discharge papers. I asked what should I do about my medicines and she said just keep taking them. After I left the room, I found the new doctor and I said since you are discharging me, at least give me something to take until I can see my personal doctor on Monday. She wrote me a prescription for firocet which was ok but my goodness I shouldnt had to hunt her down. This was the WORST experience I have ever had. At least they could have ordered an MRI or Catscan and tell me about my blood pressure. Plus what would they had done if my allergic reaction caused me to have gone into shock or even worse if I had died? This place does not deserve to be called an Emergency Room. I will NEVER go to or recommend this place to anyone EVER! read more

It was my first visit to Sentara ER on Thur 3/10/16. I had been sent there from NextCare Urgent Care as they suspected I had appendicitis. The waiting room was clean and quiet and only a few people waiting. Check in was fast and easy and I was seen within 20 minutes. I was examined, and admitted, lab work collected, CAT Scan scheduled and as their surgery schedule was full, they transferred me to Sentara Potomac and I had surgery about 4:30pm that same day. All the staff were pleasant, thorough. My experience in the surgery center was also excellent, and I like their protocol of checking entries 3 x to prevent any errors. The surgeon came in and discussed my surgery thoroughly and answered all my questions. No one seemed rushed and I felt well take care of. My surgery was uneventful and I was discharged that night. I thought I might get a follow up call to check on my progress, and was a little unclear on the discharge instructions if I was to make a follow up appt with my GP or at Sentara, so a phone call from them could have answered that. Unfortunately, on Monday I began running a fever and coughing and back to NextCare Urgent Care to be diagnosed with a test with the flu. read more

Brought my 96-year old mother in complaining of chest pains. She was seen almost immediately and staff were very pleasant and professional. Tests and diagnosis completed within two hours. Decision was to admit her over night, which requires moving to the main hospital. That is when the excellent service was offset by unbelievable delays. It took two hours to identify a room for her, and we were then advised it would be another two hours before transport was available. At the two hour point, we were advised it would be another 45 minutes before transport arrives! So, two hours to find a room, and three hours and counting for transport. It has now been more than four hours and still no transport. read more

I went in on 7 Oct for an xray. I was in the xray room, lady said she could not xray my shoulder unless i took off my necklace. I said , 1, it is dark, 2, no mirror, 3. it does not need to come off. She took it off, laid on counter. Took xrays. (i was in 8 pain), went home, Noticed my necklace was not on, i remembered. Called the xray room.. "NO necklace here", Lyn has gone home. I tried for weeks to get some one to take action, nothing. One very nice lady named Patricia put the incident into their system. I went to Patient Relations, he said he would look into it. He never called me until after i went to his office again. Now he says "we investigated, you took it off and put in your pocket, end of story". NOT.. now i have to go to police. Oh. The most friendliest, helpful staff I have ever experienced! From start to finish I got nothing but excellent service! As soon as I got checked in, I was being called back to a room. I was seen by the doctor within 15-20 minutes, got some tests done, and the results came back really fast. This was my first time here, and if I have anymore issues I will definitely come back here! My family has used Sentara's Ambulatory ER twice. In 2013 I was seen for a kidney stone. On 6/6/2016 my husband was seen for lower back spasms and severe back pain. On both occasions we were seen about midday on a weekday and were assessed within 20 minutes of arrival. The ER staff was competent, pleasant and efficient. Dr McLaurin saw both of us. She is knowledgeable, caring, thorough in her examination and explains treatment options clearly. On both occasions we were discharged and on our way within 2 1/2 - 3 hours. I really wish I could put 0 stars. They need absolutely NO stars. I used to think this ER was much better than the one off of opitz blvd. smh now it's JUST AS BAD. I arrived at 1045pm with my INFANT who is 3 months old to be exact. She has a horrible cough and wheezing , I didn't get into a room until 1:07am... YES 1:07am smh. How can this even be considered an ER when they take HOURS just to pull u back into a room for you to wait ANOTHER hour for a diagnosis SMH ! I mean this can't be serious! & not to mention the diagnosis takes 2.5 seconds! The doctor barely stays in the room long enough to even realize what's wrong with their patient !! They get paid so much money for BULLSHIT. There is no excuse for me with my infant having to wait 2.5 hrs to be seen! That is absolutely ridiculous. & honestly I don't care if it's "busy" as they say... they need doctors on call for EMERGENCIES. Instead of just having one hang around during the night shift just for the money not giving a damn if it's busy. SMH. I'm definitely going to corporate with this.
