What if you have a doctor's or other important appointment and can't be home?

I am a professional chef and was forced by circumstances beyond our control to care for my foster father at home. He was a disabled veteran and qualified for services thorough Meals on Wheels. I was completely absorbed by his necessity for 24 hour care. The first thing the program did for us was give me some much needed downtime in between doctors appointments and in home care visits. The food arrived on time and our driver was the most caring and gracious friend you could every hope for in life. I was absolutely impressed with the quality and standard of the food. It was clean, tasty and nutritious. I am a little surprised by the negative reviews. Meals on Wheels is preparing food for a variety of people who may have dietary restrictions so they shy away from salt and sugar. However, you can add your own spices, if you like. Another tip might be to gently warm the food instead of NUKING it on high in the microwave, which destroys the texture of just about anything. There are other settings... like 8, give it a try. This is the most disorganize organization I have ever dealt with. They are very short handed and it…read moreshows. However, they still want you to go into even though you're getting sub par services. When you ask them to follow-up, they never follows through. Its like you can tell them 10 times, they act like they will do it but they don't really care. At the end, nothing happens and you keep waiting and waiting. The constant phone harassment from different nurses, social workers calling to go into the center on different days to do different assessments. Imagine an 80-year old who constantly getting phone calls from different people and making different appointments. If they can't find you, they start calling the family members and blame them for not taking the elderly into the center. They will make last minute appointments without notice and said it has been scheduled. It is very frustrating when talking to people who don't care people have lives outside of CEI. All of this just so they can keep getting government funding so they get paid. The other thing is they will keep pressuring you to sign some legal documents which most of the elderlies are not capable of understand the document. I've told them to give me the copy so that I can have my family and/or lawyer to review it. They won't release a copy. The large healthcare organizations like Kaiser, Sutter Health, PAMF, they are all very courteous and always take customers feedback. After 2+ years, there is no improvement but things have worsened. I have never felt this disrespectful in my life with the tone that they talk to me over the phone and my family.

I can't really review this place as a "client" per say, but I am currently serving community…read moreservice here due to a red light traffic violation. So I can speak on that... I selected this place as I've always heard good things about the Salvation Army in General. As I was looking down the court approved list of places I could fulfill my community service obligation, Salvation Army turned out to not only be the closest to here I lived, but also the most memorable. I didn't know what to expect when I started here. All I knew was I had to serve 44 hours by November. The type of work I ended up doing was basic janitorial stuff like moving things around, mopping, taking out the trash, etc. On certain days I had the pleasure of helping the needy carry donated goods to their vehicles or carts. Before that I also assisted with preparing big bags of presorted goods fir handouts on the next days. Even though this was for community service I still felt that the time I served (& am still currently serving) was rewarding as it felt great to be supporting a good cause. The staff workers here are truly committed to helping others and their attitudes definitely show it! If you get stuck with community service or just want to volunteer your time, simply give them a call as this is a great place to help out!
