Frankfurt has the second highest concentration of museums in Germany after Berlin. A lot of those museums are on Museum Row (Museumsufer) and it's very easy to spend a day or two walking from one to the next. The Senckenberg Natural History museum is NOT on Museum Row...but it definitely demands your attention. Almost hiding in one of Frankfurt's university neighborhoods (Bockenheim) and not quite close to the Fairgrounds (Messe), the museum might seem out of the way. Don't let that stop you because it is both a wide open and densely packed museum with a lot of natural treasures from the animal kingdom. A great weekend spot for families with children, but also a quiet spot to soak up culture during the week for people without children. Top Three Highlights: 1.) Easily accessible by public transit (U4/U7 subway trains). 2.) €6 adult entry is very reasonable considering how much time you can spend inside. 3.) Many exhibits feature English translations.

Parents and kids (5&7) loved it. Easily lost a morning. Cafe was closed but easy to exit and re-enter.

This has to be Frankfurt's best 6,00€ value. If you're in town it's a must. Just be sure you have a lot of time.

For fans of the Office, this museum has particular significant meaning. In the "Bring Your…read moreDaughter to Work Day" episode, Dwight mentions the name Struwwelpeter--a cautionary tale written by Heinrech Hoffmann, who was born in Frankfurt. While in Frankfurt, yelper Sigourney W. and I decided to take a look at this Struwwelpeter Museum as it was a fairly short distance from the hotel we were staying at. The museum has many levels, and each level has different exhibits, mostly showcasing some of the originals of Hoffmann's works and very ancient copies of Struwwelpeter. What I found to be amazing was that Struwwelpeter has been translated into many languages--and there are just a few samples of these translated books showcased at this museum. The lady who works here was really friendly and welcoming. She didn't speak much English, so she and I had to speak German (well, I tried my best). She even gave me a souvenir Struwwelpeter postcard, free of charge, for which I was very grateful. She also gave us a mini tour, in Spanish (because Sigourney W. didn't speak German, and the lady happened to know some Spanish), which was really nice. This museum caters to families and children, as on the top floor there is a children's activity area. This is where I found pieces of paper where you could color in Struwwelpeter (Sigourney and I did this; it was a nice, therapeutic group activity!) And even better...there's an image of Struwwelpeter with his face cut out, so that you can put your face through and take a picture. It was totally AWESOME!!! Admission is a few euros, so it's a good deal for the history and the family-friendly atmosphere you get. A lot of the exhibits are not written in English, but I was able to read for the most part with the German I knew. I don't think many tourists come here, hence the lack of English materials available. All in all, I highly recommend this place as it was definitely a unique experience. I always lamented that Frankfurt didn't have much to do, but after coming here, at least I know there's this quaint museum that's worth anyone's time to visit. Come check it out! :)

Deutsches Filmmuseum - 3rd floor Aardman exhibit was wonderful

I enjoyed my time here very much. I usually prefer to be outdoors, in a sculpture garden or…read morehiking, not so much in a museum. Unless there is something special that sets it apart from the usual modern art/portrait/natural history type of experience. I was ready to be inside and warm, and I was ready to see something new, so the Film Museum seemed like a good choice. There are several floors of exhibits spanning the history of moving images. From the very first to the very recent, I was delighted with the interactive exhibits and tidbits of information I gleaned while walking around. Special appreciation goes to the team that made the montage of film clips that I saw on the upper floor. That took a lot of work - it flowed together and had theme, the sound turned up on one of several scenes that might be taking place at any given moment on the wrap around screens. Truly, great job. Likewise with the Ardman montage - I simply couldn't stop watching. Speaking of which, the collection up there was wonderful. I loved seeing the clay models, and the sets with all the small props. I especially liked the characters that were on the walls - these should have been for sale! If they had been I'd have several sheep in my living room right this minute. If you're like me and you only wander in from outside when there is something out of the ordinary to see, then let yourself wander here.

Actually, this place was pretty cool. The main museum is over two levels, the first being a history…read moreof film making and the second being an exploration of the various processes of making a film. Actually, the museum is much more than just those two levels though namely because they also have their own cinemas where they various cult classics being played (and also the ever present gift shop). However, the second floor, the one that explores the how movies are made was fascinating, especially since there are a lot of displays where you get to play around with effects and so on. They also have movies playing up here as well, though I would find a film museum that doesn't actually show films to be a little odd.

Thought I'd add an English review, for non-German-speaking travellers visiting Frankfurt who like…read morethe Blues ... we had a great night at Orange Peel. The entrance off Kaierstrasse might cause you to look twice - go through an old passageway, on your right is the cloakroom and up the stairs is the Orange Peel bar itself. Unlike many other places in Frankfurt, this is an easy-going, un-self-conscious venue, with a friendly atmosphere, unostentatious interior and broad mix of clientele. We got there just after 9pm for the Tuesday blues night, and the crowd (thin at 9.15pm, packed out by 11.30pm) was a mix of students, middle-aged types, hipsters and grey-haired blues fans. The booze was pretty cheap and the bar service was quick and friendly. No food - eat before you come! Most importantly, the music was very good. The house band played for an hour, serving up well-executed blues tinged with a hint of funk - one or two standards (like Hoochie Coochie Man, which they nailed) and some rarities. Although the leader is Tommie Harris on drums, the MC'ing was done by the guitarist, who chatted away to the crowd in a mix of German and English (at least half of the band are originally from the US as far as I can tell). The second half of the evening was 'open stage' with all comers welcome to join the house band for a number or two. Fun times; we were sorry we had to leave before the night was over. The crowd were still cheering on the band and the open stage guests, who ranged from OK to excellent. If you bring your guitar, and you know the opening licks for 'Jonny B Goode', then you too might be able to join in ...
