We are in the Ville for a few days. So today was a perfect time to visit…read more So much more than we expected. The Survivor Gutenberg bibles in a bank safe. With a watcher. Floor after floor of printed rare books, Hand scribed bibles , tiny -tiny books and every imaginable printing press. A small furnace model with a mold and bronze casting as a example of how individual letters could be cast and finished. A engraving machine to make plates for bond certificates. Similar to money certificates. And a movie theater explaining the history of the man. Birth to death. Really great 3 hours. Nice little Art shop at the end.

Most of the museum staff were absolutely lovely-except for the self-proclaimed sheriff on the…read moresecond floor who apparently moonlights as the head of the purse patrol. This man decided my small handbag was some sort of security threat and dramatically asked me to leave the museum. Never mind that I'd already strolled past five other staff ( including the one at the entrance ) who said it was perfectly fine. So there I was, trekking back to the entrance, ready to exit in shame-only to be told, "Oh, don't worry, he does that all the time." Ah yes, every good museum needs it's resident tyrant to keep things interesting. The museum itself? Decent, if you like your exhibits laid out like a scavenger hunt designed by someone with commitment issues. The cafe, however, redeemed the experience-especially the kind lady working there and their cute photo corner. Honestly, she should be running the place.

Museum für Antike Schiffahrt, Mainz. I find Roman history…read morefascinating, so I'm always on the lookout for anything new. Archeologists found the remains of 5 ancient Roman ships in Mainz, and they backward engineered replicas of them at the museum. There are plenty of friezes, carvings, and Roman artifacts to supplement the ships. Admission to the museum is free, and there is a parkplatz directly across the street (that accepts only credit cards). Although there are some pilons in English, none of the exhibits are in English, the movie in the kiosk is in German, and there are no audioguides. If you're not proficient in German, you will have to rely upon visual cues alone to discern what is being said. I would recommend this museum to people who have an interest in archaeology in general, in ancient Roman history, in ancient naval history, and soforth. (No mummies. What is a museum without mummies?)

Very nice cathedral in the heart of Mainz. If you go during the week, you can enjoy the farmers…read moremarket. Make sure you check out all the sculpted depictions in the church.

Okay so if you read my travel reviews you'll know I'm a sucker for old cathedrals and churches…read more They always have amazing antiquities, beautiful art, and in my opinion, give you a sense of the story of a place. This one is no different. I love that it's free to explore, and that despite it being a church, there is actually quite a bit to see. It's very large, has beautiful stained glass, and even a courtyard to explore. Due to the time difference between KC and Germany I ended up getting a facetime call from my toddler while I was here so I popped out about midway through our time here to take a break, so I feel like there might be even more to see than what my time permitted. One extra thing to add that is important is that this is one of few churches I've been to that has public restrooms! I think they cost one or two euro but it was so nice to be able to use them while out and about in Mainz. If you're visiting Mainz this is a must visit - it's cheap, and gives you a really good sense of the history of the place.

Die…read moreeigentliche Zitadelle beherbergt zwar ein Museum, ansonsten sind der Platz und Umgebung (Drususturm) eher etwas für ein entspanntes Picknick. Das Gelände grenzt auf einer Seite fast direkt an den Bahnhof "Römisches Theater" an, weshalb ich mich überhaut in die Ecke begeben habe. An dem Abend fand eine Filmvorführung statt, für die uich aber nicht geblieben bin. Von Events abgesehen eher zum Vergessen.
