I haven't had much to do with Selwyn College since the 1980s, so this review is likely to be rather out-of-date by now! Still, nothing beats nostalgia, so here goes
Selwyn had the reputation then of being a friendly College, which it certainly was. Being a little bit removed from the centre of town quite a few people tended to stay in College to socialise, so the student population was probably more tightly knit there than elsewhere; the fact that the College was able to offer accommodation very close by for all three years (in Old Court, Cripps Court or a student house) helped in this regard.
The College boasted all the usual facilities and a peaceful chapel which was shared with Newnham, the womens' college across the road.
The staff were friendly -- the porters especially, if you kept on the right side of them -- and the food was of a high standard (Formal Hall offering particularly good value).
All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Selwyn to anyone thinking of studying in Cambridge. read more
