I was…read morepretty sure I had a sinus infection, which caused copious post nasal drip, which in turn made me cough all night. I hoped time would heal, but a sleepless red-eye and little rest due to relentless sightseeing made things worse. I emailed the doctor with my (amateur) self-diagnosis and asked for an appointment. He responded quickly and I saw him a few hours later. When he examined me, there were none of the usual procedures that my primary care physician would do: no temperature-taking, no blood pressure measurement. He did not look in my ears or nose with an otoscope. He used a flash light to look at my throat, sans tongue-depressor. Then he used a stethoscope, told me to cough three times, and proclaimed that I had bronchitis in addition to a sinus infection. From there, he began writing an Rx (pre-printed with a few medicines listed). I was confused because he didn't ask me more questions about my medical background, so I told him that I have allergies. He looked up at me from his writing, I told him my two antibiotic allergies, and he replied, "You just saved your own life" as he crumpled the scrip he was writing for penicillin. From there, he wrote a new one (on a different pre-printer sheet), explained the dosage instructions, and made me repeat them to him to check my comprehension. I walked out the door with an Rx for a different antibiotic and something like prednisone (!). We walked north to the pharmacy he suggested (and past what certainly were two old, tired-looking prostitutes on St. Denis) and got them filled. To my surprise, the medicines were cheap! (Socialized medicine?) I would give this doctor...3.5 stars because I still don't know if he is a quack. HOWEVER, I do know that within *a couple of hours* I felt SO much better. And I continued to get better. It felt like a miracle. In the end, this visit was worth the €100 cash: it wholly redeemed what started out as a crummy vacation.

EXCELLENT CARE. VERY COMPETENT DOCTOR…read more I discovered Dr. Pandraud through the American Hospital in Paris, but he also has a private office. Dr. Pandraud speaks English. He is the BEST ENT I have ever seen in the world. Firstly for his effective treatments that rarely involve medication and secondly for his availability and compassion. When I am in the area, it means I have taken an airplane and sometimes I'll have plugged ears that don't go away. I can always get an appointment with Dr. Pandraud pretty easily. He does some manoeuvrings and then has me drink water and bing! Like magic my ears feel better. He has also helped me with sinus infections and very effective nasal lavage. This is a technique that empties the sinuses thereby relieving congestion and the resulting headaches. You feel better instantly without medication. Finally, since I trust him more than any other ENT in the states, I decided to come here when I needed laser surgery to remove polyps in my nasal sinus. The procedure is simple. I used to get chronic sinusitis (one nostril would always be blocked). I would be sick with a stuffy nose at least once a month. Additionally, every little cold turned into a week-long ordeal with painful sinus headaches. Now, thanks to Dr. Pandraud, I can blow my nose and any seasonal flus go away in a day or two and I am almost never sick. If you need laser surgery in your nose or throat and you have the possibility to see Dr. Pandraud, I believe the trip is definitely worth it.

Yes, the doctor was a very nice and polite man and he did speak english reasonably well. After I called him, he agreed to see me that same evening. He ended up cleaning my sinuses and even stayed late on a Friday night to do so, which I think is unheard of in US. The important piece of information that is missing is that he charges 100 EUR per visit which explains his fantastic office on Champs-Elyseés and the very chic decor in the waiting room. Having been to another doctor in Paris and having paid 23 EUR per visit there (about the norm), which was a pretty bad experience overall, I can clearly say Dr. Luc's services are not tailored for the average man, based on the clientele I saw in the waiting room. So if you can afford 100 EUR visits, go ahead - enjoy the experience! He is a good doctor and seems to be a nice man. But I thought I'd mention the price tag.

I made an appointment and only waited about 5-10 minutes after arriving to proceed with my ultrasound. One of the things that I appreciated is that the doctor was professional and I did not at all have the impression that he was imcompetent. He asked pertinent questions and genuinely cared. The waiting room was also very large and beautiful. The entryway was impressive with big wooden staircase. I felt like I was being welcomed into someone's home and not really a doctor's office. After the ultrasound of my thyroid, I only waited another 5 minutes for my results and photos. The secretary was very curteous, as well, when she handed them to me and took care of my payment.

I moved to Paris for a few years in the late 1990s and on my first visit with Dr. Steinmetzer, for some minor complaint, he diagnosed me with coronary artery disease, insisting that I have tests right away to prove it, even though I was in complete denial, saying that I "felt fine." My former internist in the U.S., whom I had seen regularly for the previous 20 years, had totally missed my heart problems. Dr. Steinmetzer treated me medically for three years, then told me it was time for heart surgery. I went back to the U.S. and 10 days later I had an emergency FIVE-ARTERY bypass. Thank you, Dr. Steinmetzer. Ten years later, I was again back in Paris for several weeks' visit, and one day I felt a severe burning ache in my outer calf. Dr. Steinmetzer was available immediately to see me, and diagnosed me as having shingles after listening to my symptoms for only five minutes, although I had no visible skin lesions...yet. Next morning, sure enough, blisters had begun to show. He is one of the best diagnosticians I have ever known, and has always been straightforward, kind, friendly and a very fine "medical detective."
