I believe, going forward/after coming out of the crisis that is COVID the set appointment (and online and kiosk and same day openings) will be a welcome relief to all Michiganders. Having to take a day off work to sit in an SOS office for possibly hours on end was never anyone's idea of a "good time". I applaud the change. I was able to renew everything by mail while my mother walked into a Kroger kiosk to handle her SOS business, while another friend was able to call and get a next day appointment. We had a 9/72/2024, 9am appointment and from the minute we checked in to the time we left our visit was PERFECT!. We had to get MI drivers license, MI car tags/registration and registered to vote. We had the friendliest, professional clerks and they welcomed us to Keego Harbor and the surrounding area. We did forget one required document and they allowed to us run home and return without having to reschedule the appointment. There is a Kiosk in the front lobby that allows you to renew certain things which is new to us so we will remember this when renewal time comes. I highly recommend this location and hope your visit goes as well as ours. My tip for you, go prepared with all required documents, make an appointment and be positive & polite! read more

Because of COVID-19, I had to make an appointment to get an Enhanced ID and renew my license tabs. (I never got a renewal notice for them.) It was frustrating to make the online appointment, as they disappeared very quickly. However, I was lucky to be able to snag one for the next day. (NOTE: Next day appointments are truly only available at 8:00 am and noon; at any other time, the calendar isn't even available.) I did have to wait with another person for a few minutes to be let into the building, as they do lock the doors. The man who let us in was very patient and helpful. He asked a few questions and directed each of us on what we were supposed to do. I didn't have to wait more than a minute or two to be assisted. The clerks were all very calm, friendly and helpful. The one who waited on me patiently explained the difference between the REAL ID and the Enhanced ID. (I'd filled out forms for both.) When it was time to get my picture taken, I didn't like the first picture and the clerk gladly took another one. My appointment was at 4:10 and I was back in my car by 4:30. So I'm sure the SOS does not get a ton of positive reviews however I would be remiss if I didn't leave one about a lovely individual by the name of Corey. My Father recently passed and we moved mom to a new care facility. The care facility let us know they need her ID. Her license expired in 2018 and was never renewed (trust me we are all safer) Now neither myself or my sister would be able to get her into any of our vehicles for an office visit so I didn't know how I was going to solve this. I called the main number and explained the situation to Corey who got right on it and said it sounds like we can get her a new state Id through the home bound program and we could do the application right over the phone. In less than 15min she had what I was dreading was going to be a terrible problem sorted right out. Thank you Corey for your kindness and help. read more

I went in for a renewal, of which I had the paperwork sent to me in the mail for, only to be told they were not renewing .. I needed to complete an application. What a joke typical government run institution unorganized not enough information to complete your transaction tried to transfer a trailer registration and purchase a plate for a boat, after waiting in line for 30 minutes for my 9:40 appointment (similar to the doctors office) they tell me I have to take the boat off the trailer and have the trailer weighed and then wait another 2 weeks for another appointment. I haven't been to an SOS in years. It's unfortunate to discover that they haven't innovated their line waiting or service processes AT ALL. Expect to wait a looooooooong time with employees who hate being here just as much as we do. This is what happens when a taxpayer funded organization has no accountability to customer service. I'm convinced that if the SOS didn't exist, Michigan's economic prosperity would skyrocket due to a massive recovery of millions and millions of productive hours wasted here by the population. This SoS is an embarrassment. We were in line at 9am and it took an hour and 35 minutes to finally have the first person called up. How do you have three people working with 45-50 people waiting in line? What a joke. People have to work or be somewhere else. This place has to close down at some point. This is my first ever Yelp review. The other reviews are in such contrast to what I experienced myself, so I felt the need to share that experience. I made an appointment here to renew my license since you can't do so online when turning 21. After making it I saw all of the negative reviews here was was dreading going. I had an appointment for 9:40am on the 5th of January, 2021. I was back in my car driving home at 10:00am. I wish I had gotten the name of the women who assisted me because she was very quick and extremely friendly. I wouldn't avoid this location like many of the other reviews are suggesting. Got here and my number was 11 and they were on 73 when I arrived. Went next door to eat lunch at Subway and the idiots working there were also incredibly slow so I was worried maybe my number was called. The horrors of the SoS offices! Honestly, this one was not bad at all; I must have just got there at the right time cause they went from #69 to my number #83 in about 20 minutes and I had a slew of things to fix. It was relatively easy and quick but man they nickel and dime you for everything! An updated pic on your license? $9.... you'd think that would have been a necessary evil but nonetheless I paid for it. The only negative was the lady helping me having a stereotypical SoS attitude when things aren't done correctly the one and only time they want to do something. She had the wrong address for me on all the documents and I signed everything, so we had to redo it all. There was a bit of an eyeroll and sigh on her part but whatever. Thats her job. It all worked out in the end. I got all my stuff updated, paid $48 for God knows what and was on my way within an hour. I'd say thats a success. read more

I arrived at 8:20 and it opened at 9:00. I was 8th in line. By 9:00, there were over 30 people in line. They opened the door at 9:05. They had two people working. One lady was the document checker, which I think is a good idea to make sure you have the appropriate documents before you wait another 2 hours. Then, there is only one other person to wait on the customers. However, the problem is the lady is so rude. I have encountered her before. She has an attitude before you even get up to the counter. Apparently, I had the wrong document filled out that I received at my last 2-hour visit and was assured I would have everything I needed when I returned. She doesn't even say, I'm so sorry for the inconvenience or apologize for their mistake. The incompetence and customer service is frightening. This is a typical government agency. They act like they are doing you a favor by calling you up to the desk. Do yourself a favor and go to the Pontiac office. You will have to wait but they have a text system where they will notify you of your place in line by text. You may run into some of the similar issues but way more organized and friendly. read more

This place is in need of a serious operational overhaul. A room full of people waiting and only one (and sometimes) two employees helping while others are working on administrative tasks. I live not even ten mins away, got here right at 9am waited in line, got my number and sat down. Since I sat down I waited 4 hours just get to an address change which is so ridiculous and excessive to me when I can drive an extra 10 mins to go to the Novi location and be out of there way sooner than the orchard lake location would have. The only reason why I came to this location because it's closer to where I live now. Now I know for the future which location I'll be going to. These idiots did not give me back my car title in the sea of paperwork. My toddler was going nuts and I did not realize this until after I got home. Plus, a woman "supervisor" at this branch got so much enjoyment off of trying to deny me a Michigan driver's license ID coming up with all kinds of false BS. What a racket! My temporary disability placard expired in November of 2019. Then Covid came. I've been trying ever since to get an appointment to renew the damn thing, which takes a total of 4 minutes. If you need a permanent disability placard you can do it online. Of course, it would take too much common sense to also allow the renewing of a disability placard. You could upload the doctor's statement and be done with it. But NO, "let's see just how difficult we can make this just to make someone miserable". Another State of Michigan quagmire (read unemployment) not based on common sense. I decided to call which was a big mistake because I was caught in a loop for 15 minutes pushing button after button and ending up going through the exact routine 3 times. I finally got to a place that said "Leave a message". I have no idea where I was at this point, but I sure left a message. I still don't have my disability placard or an appointment to get one. read more

This was the best experience I've ever had at this branch. I had to replace my license, Helen was so kind and friendly! I showed her my birth certificate and one piece of mail with my name and address on it. The wait was a little long, but I had a nice conversation with the woman seated next to me. After reading all the negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised! Everyone who worked there were extremely nice and efficient. Obviously you have to go in there with the expectation that it will take longer than you would like but overall a good experience.
