The Christmas room

Christmas room surprise! This is a really beautiful magical "little" (I thought!) shop that I have been dropping by for many many years. Well today for the very first time I walked all the way through to the back and was shocked to find a large Christmas room packed with all sorts of quality treasures! If you love all things Christmas, be sure to pass through the garden decorations, quilts, unique jewelry, lace, stone carvings, candles, soaps and multiple more unique gifts to find this "secret" Christmas room at the very back of the store!

If you love fairies, this is the place to visit

This is my favorite store in Sugarcreek, have to go each tome I visit Ohio. Both me and my daughter love fairy gardens, so this is a very magical place for us. You walk in and you just want to look at everything. We are like kids in a candy shop. It's hard to pull us away from all the fairy items, everything you could possibly need to start one. They have lots of beautiful quilts, jewelry, crystals, salt lamps, dragons. Christmas decorations all the way in the back. That area I don't really spend time in when I am here because I am not into holidays but my daughter does. I stay at the front and middle of the store. Customer service was wonderful, the gentleman working was telling us about the new hotel they are building next door in the future, a fairy hotel! Well you got us right there, we can't wait to see it! Maybe by my next trip to Ohio. They don't have a website up and running yet, he said once the hotel is up they will. There is also a location in Berlin, Oh. This one is our favorite out of the two.

Looks like there's also seasonal decorations for Halloween and Christmas in rooms that open around that time of the year.

Kaleidoscope is a truly unique shop on Amish Country with real art, crafts, handmade items, unique gifts, and local flare made by over 20 different artisans. Candles, soaps, jewelry, signage, badge holders, and a few Amish quilts are just a few examples. Also, great for picking up a postcard or magnet with photos from local photographers. On a Monday afternoon when we were the only customers in the store, I was also able to chat with Amber who was an excellent tour guide telling me all of the insider tips for my visit. I took a lot of her suggestions and it made for a really unique and fun day. If nothing else, stop in for a reasonable priced soda! It was just 60¢the day I visited !

The amazingly friendly workers said they could make custom ones for my kids! So we went home with a custom blue and custom pink elephant we saw being made for the same price an existing one would have been. What great service and value! The second time I visited the shop was to pick up the free wax melts that were a part of the Dutch host inn package. Since it was just me I was able to ask about the candles. They pour all of them right there! There was a great selection of sizes, scents and jars. I love that they have lilac, basically my ultimate favorite scent. It can be harder to find. I left with a giraffe candle and a lilac candle (in addition to my wax melts). The shop does take credit cards but there is a four percent fee if you pay that way. If you are going to Walnut Creek farms it is right down the street from the entrance. Definitely worth a visit and a place I'll be back to!

David Warther Carvings - Ornate scrimshaw work. All the lines are cut into the work and then filled with India ink

On site, they have a charming shop with a variety of household decor items. They also have a variety of knives. The reason the space exists, though, is because of the intricate ivory carvings. The museum space itself is kind of small, but there are a variety of historical ships depicted. It is incredible how intricate he was able to get with something as delicate as ivory. So much detail and so many tiny and thin pieces. I never would have thought it was possible! I was curious about how the ivory was acquired since I know that is a hot topic, and it was all ethically sourced through either antiques or other legal means. The building is meticulous and the staff extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The museum was affordably priced (they even have a family rate of $25) and worth it if you are looking for something different and unique to experience.

This man's grandfather Ernest Warther carved trains out of ebony and ivory. He passed this talent on to his grandson David. What Ernest did in trains, David has done in sailing vessels. The intricacy of the work, the overarching attention to detail and the pure artistic genius that goes into these carvings is nothing short of amazing. Each one will capture your attention for different reasons. Whether it is the bold lines, the intricate sailing vessels with all their masts and rope or the ornate scrimshaw on some of these pieces, the experience is amazing. There is no other collection like this one in the world. This is not your typical stuffy art museum. Every piece is fascinating and exciting. Everything is hand carved from legally and ethically sourced ivory. We were fortunate enough to arrive while the artist was working in his in house workshop. He came out and met all of us and showed us how he perfects all the myriad of tiny intricate ropes on his sailing vessels. Everything is carved. Nothing is manufactured elsewhere and added to the pieces. The gift shop was nice and well stocked. The whole place is clean, wheelchair accessible and pieces are well lit. Bathrooms were in good shape when we were there. This is a must stop destination if you are in the Sugarcreek area.
