The owner of this store is an absolute treasure of a person. The store itself is a fun treat for one to spend hours looking through so many interesting, beautiful, unique items. I walked out with a beautiful leather coat for only $25, a real steal at that price! I hope that the reader finds this review fair... I have been waiting on my friend to get a haircut for the past 45 minutes and while waiting I took note of the owner of this shop. She has been diligently cleaning the front space of her building. Flowers placed in just the right spot. Swept her storefront and the ones beside it. Spoke to people as they walked by. Oh my! This is a great little place for vintage clothes. Lots of women stuff, but they do have lots and lots of ties for guys. Ms. Gwen is amazingly sweet. She has some pretty swell CD collections and she offered to burn me a copy of one of them. SO NICE!! She is relocating her store up the street on Sycamore and Washington sometime in August 2011 - it'll be a 3 story heaven for vintage freaks! I'm quite in love with my shopping experience at Second Hand Rose.The shop is well organized, easy to navigate and has some really well-cared for vintage finds. What a gem! This store and owner Mrs. Gwen are pure treasures! From the moment I walked in with one of my dear friends, I felt welcomed. It was like I've been a customer my entire life. It truly is a step back in time with the beautiful clothing, hats, jewelry, shoes, purses.. you name it! Incredible attention to detail in everything she does. Knowledgeable in all aspects of vintage fashion and helpful. It was like how shopping should be and reminded me from times passed . I will forever come back for all my fashion needs. I ended up purchasing a fabulous navy dress from the 50s and putting on layaway an amazing 1950s jumpsuit and 1970s platforms! Recently visited Second Hand Rose and stood in the middle of the showroom amazed at the beauty of the store. They have moved to their new location and it is the most beautiful building in Petersburg. Wait until you see how Ms. Gwen has brought this building to life (11 N. Sycamore St). The ceiling tins are spectacular along with the beautiful old floors. Picked up a brochure that dates the building back to 1905 and occupants in this building have included Arrington Green, Southern Chemical Co, Bristow music company, Powell-Cole Stationery, Garrett's Hallmark, Carol Ann Dress Shop....but the best is in there now! Seond Hand Rose sells vintage clothing (dresses, shoes, purses, jewelry, hats, coats, and accessories from the 1920's through the 1980's). This is the real deal fashion store. I chuckled when a young guy came in looking for just the right suit for a '70's function. He left with a suit complete with bell bottom legs. He actually looked really nice in this suit along with his period bow tie. The second floor will soon have a mercantile display featuring memorabilia, Virginia Stores of the Past. These items have also been modeled in Ms. Gwen's annual fashion show (normally in April). Tickets sell out fast to this event. As a young girl it was a big deal to venture to Richmond dressed in my Sunday best to shop at Miller & Rhodes and Thalhimers. Mom would be wearing high heels, a hat, gloves and carrying a purse. I recently relocated back to Virginia, and welcomed the whispers of the hidden treasures the city had to offer in Historic Old Towne Petersburg. My first stop was Second Hand Rose owned by Mrs. Gwen Cooper. At first glance, I digested the structure, high ceilings with antique embellishment, and who could miss the garments with flares of panache. The vintage clothing that enveloped the hangers and unique accessories present reminded me of the fashion houses I had studied from the decadent eighties and regality that was present amongst women during those eras. The owner also looked striking in a one-piece vintage jumpsuit and statement piece belt, finishing with a hat. She clearly was dressed for success and to sell! What I gained from this visit that is not currently present in small businesses was great customer service, the right amount of conversation, spiritual leadership, and merchandise to add to my collection. Ms. Cooper is knowledgeable about her garments (dresses, formal wear, skirts, shirts, sweaters,jackets, sequins, overcoats, and men apparel), eras, style, and direction of the store. She also shared with me that she is currently working on a museum, library, and souvenir shop for individuals whom appreciate the arts.
