The best of the best! Their work is all done from the heart and incredibly humble. Nothing fancy but when it comes to dogs, all you really need is love and they've got that and give that in droves. It's evident the dogs' well-being is the priority.
We've adopted 3 dogs from them over the years, happily making the drive from Atlanta. We've gotten to know the owners a bit and follow on social media where you learn more about the behind-the-scenes of what they have to deal with from countless lives (of the canine AND human variety) to the heartbreak of the loss of a beloved dog that never got its fur-ever home.
They make adoption extremely affordable to ensure the new families can afford food and care after adoption. This affordability helps more dogs get adopted. They also have a wonderful relationship with McCrory Animal Clinic, where each animal has been treated, spayed/neutered, properly vaccinated and healthy - which sometimes includes surgery or intensive treatment - before being adopted.
Each dog has a name and their individual personalities are known by all who work there, even though there are often 200++ dogs there waiting for homes. The first time we adopted from them, Wanda (she and Doug are the owners) graciously met us part way because of the lengthy drive. Our newly named Gracie had been in the shelter for about a year. Wanda cried as she hugged Gracie goodbye, which left us all in tears.
When animals are need of help - like they hear of an animal chained up, or running loose - they share and rally others to find and help the others when they don't have the manpower to do it themselves. They've shown up some mornings to find a box of puppies dumped by the gate, a dog tied to a tree nearby or maybe scared and injured from having been tossed over the gate, or maybe left running loose nearby. Some survive. Some don't. Their lives all matter and leave a mark on the hearts and souls of Doug, Wanda, and those who work there, and the community-at-large.
They've grown over the years - collaborating with a secondary location in Wisconsin, and with organizations to take on specialty cases like pregnant dogs and litters, or ageing/hospice-ready dogs. All to make sure each dog gets a second chance (and in some cases, third or fourth as sometimes prior owners pass away and have no one take take in their beloved paw buddy). read more
