(This is a review of the grounds and labyrinth, which are open to the public sunrise to sunset)…read more Life is full of twists and turns, right? And life's journey rarely puts us on a straight path to our goal. Those are some of the concepts behind the design and meaning of a labyrinth. Its maze-like design has only one way into the center, so you need faith and trust that you're walking in the right direction to get there. When the Pandemic hit us in early 2020, my wife remembered seeing a feature on the local news about how people were dealing with stress and searching for a sense of peace and tranquility. One of the things mentioned was a place in West Hartford where you could walk around and visit a labyrinth. After a little research, we identified that place to be the Holy Family Monastery-Retreat Center, and that's where we spent an hour or so today. Its 48 acres of peace and tranquility with paved paths, unpaved paths, statues, a basketball court, and all kinds of interesting sites. The most interesting feature is the Retreat's labyrinth with stone path dividers and an ash-gravel floor, It was dedicated on September 11, 2008. You walk it in a winding circular path that eventually takes you into its center and a circular sculpture where visitors have placed little souvenirs, stones, and remembrances to honor a person, event, or an emotion. I saw tiny toys, a religious medal, a blue silk flower and hand painted stones that said "Care", Success", "Romance", and "Happy Birthday". I'm sure that every article had a story behind it, some happy and some, no doubt, sad. It reminded me of the souvenirs and items of remembrance I've seen at the Vietnam Veterans Wall in DC, and The World Trade Center Memorial at Ground Zero. I'm not a very religious or spiritual person, but my visit to the Labyrinth was a very beautiful and satisfying experience.

I have been listening to the services this month…read more (November). I want so much to attend there services as the Spirit God is prevalent even streaming. I have been fed the unadulterated word by both the pastor and his assistant by way of streaming. The Apostolic doctrine is what I am familiar with as a young child. I am not so young now. but I still need to be fed and covered. I'm praying that I will be able to get there in person real soon.

The rabbi, who is now on leave I do believe, was incredibly welcoming to the boyfriend and I on our first several visits. New faces are always exciting for frequent goers, but the treatment we got was what I hope for when heading to new synagogues. I'm not big on guitars or organs, so those are the few things that I'm not big on at this shul. The High Holidays services were wonderful, excepting for some curious musical choices at times. I try to avoid the guitar-style services because it's a little too new-age for me, and it works out well. If you're looking for a nice, cozy place with beautiful artwork and a welcoming, friendly community, then Emanuel is probably right up your alley.

When I went to college I continued the trend and went every Friday night to services at our Hillel. After college I tried a couple of places but never found somewhere I felt comfortable. Recently after years of not going, I decided to try Emanuel, and I loved it. The Rabbi is extremely nice and the building is beautiful. This is a place I definitely felt comfortable. The Rabbi one of the first times me and my girlfriend went in there asked us if we had somewhere to go to for the High Holidays, which I did not. He said that if we wanted to, to call the office on Monday and tell them to give us two passes for services and we are more than welcome as his guest, which we took him up on. Unfortunately I was unable to make Rosh Hashana service, but when we went for Yom Kippur it was very nice. The cantor did a great job and the envirnment was great and what I was used to.
