It was established more than a quarter century ago by Leilani Jones-Chubby to preserve the culture of the Quinault. Leilani was on-hand the day of my visit. She continues on as the museum's curator & archivist and many of her own woven creations are a part of the collection! A large part of the museum's collection is made up of woven baskets, but also look for the beautiful woven dolls in traditional Quinault gear that were created by Leilani herself. The collection also includes wonderfully detailed painted paddles, painted ceremonial drums heads, many stone tools and much more. Unlike traditional museums, there are not as many informational cards (explaining the artifacts) as you might expect. Be sure to ask the curator to share her knowledge...the traditional storytelling way of passing down information!

The "Driftwood Players" have existed since the 50's, floating around locations on the harbor like pieces of their namesake "driftwood"...in the early days taking the entertainment directly to where the tourists could be found. Since 1982, they have called their current location home... and what a home it is. The theater is beautiful inside and out. It is a true jewel for this historic coastal community. I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Daddy Long Legs (2023 season) and I was pleasantly surprised. A cast of two and an orchestra of four put on a first class show that rivaled some of the best shows I've seen around the country! I continue to be blown away by the talent found around Grays Harbor. The artists, musicians, singers and actors make this area ground zero for the best entertainment that can be found on the remote west coast of Washington state. Regarding Daddy Long Legs, I would be remiss if I didn't give due praise to director Brad Duffy, Carlos Cruz (as Jervis) and Chaela Watkins (as Jerusha Abbott). They absolutely succeeded in transporting this audience member to the turn of the century in an immersive, funny and romantic journey through clever dialogue and wonderful stagecraft. Bravo and a very well deserved standing ovation! The most heartbreaking thing was that the theater wasn't fully packed. So get out the word, plan to attend a show and support the amazing talent that is the Driftwood Players!

So on the way to the ocean we swung in here. I was prepared with some ashes in hand and was warmly welcomed by the owners. I was ugly crying and struggling to describe what I was looking for, but they were compassionate and helpful and let me have all the time I needed to make some decisions while simultaneously talking about how amazing Howie was. They helped me pick out the perfect pieces to create to honor him - I ended up with two glass votives and a sleeping glass cat. I got to choose the colors and sizes and styles. And they are beautiful. Honestly, the glass I received a couple weeks later was beyond my expectations. Little pieces of art that bring me joy and warmth whenever I see them or light a candle within. I couldn't have thought of a better way to keep his spirit alive than this, and I am so grateful for Opal Art Glass for taking the time to create something so perfect and meaningful to me. I ordered a sparkling wine...which confused the bartender so i said "something like cooks" so she brought out a small bottle of prosecco and criticized me as being "fancy" for wanting a glass to pour it in. We said we wanted to play pool and the bartender's friend said she would kick our @ss...so we went back there and found the table that needed quarters to play and moldy food sitting on the tables nearby. Decided to walk outside to vape and a nice senior member walked out to smoke with us...we found out she grew up in the area and she was sharing stories about her family with us, which we were all enjoying...then the bartenders friend came outside and ruined the whole vibe by saying she didn't like us and then made fun of the senior member. Called her out as being a mean person and headed out. Not sure what we did to feel unliked...we were nothing but polite and friendly...my partner was really upset we were treated like that
