*Disclaimer: I am not a patron of this library as I neither live nor work in Richmond Hill…read more I'm in this library every so often to pick up a family member who works at the high school next door. The school is their primary client as they are literally connected with an attached school corridor. As such, as noted in other reviews, it's continually full of students. They created signage directed at them because of the rowdiness that can sometimes occur. Also, there are often parents with younger siblings waiting to pick up the secondary school children, so of you are aiming for a quiet, comforting place to relax and read, you might want to come when the school is closed. Also, the majority of seating is designed to use your own computer at a shared desk area with classroom type chairs. The few comfy chairs tend to be taken up quickly. It's pretty small, but there's good light from the large windows. There's public restrooms, but there's no water from a fountain. You'll have to pay an inflated price for the bottled water etc. from their vending machines. An earlier review said wifi is only available to patrons with a library card, but that is no longer the case. You can connect quickly and easily without one. I'd much prefer to use a larger library that caters to the public, or at least my little local library. With no fountains or enough comfy chairs, I can't last very long here.

There are good selections of current paperbacks and best sellers. Most of them are in great conditions and some of them brand news since the library is only 3 years old or so. I really enjoy spending a hour or 2 on my day off having a cup of coffee and lounging around using their wifi internet and read some magazines. Of course the best thing is the free wifi!!!

Of course there are some reasonable municipal parking lots right next to the library at 50 cents a hour and free on evenings, weekends and holidays.

So I opened up yelp and came across this one not to far from school. The building looks very pretty. And the inside is nice and quiet. Very organized and clean. There are two levels one has a few computers in the far corners and the second level has some tables and couches to do some work. Asides from having books on both floors. It also has a cafe in the building, which was neat. I haven't seen a library with a cafe before. I had chosen the couch spot to do some work and sit by the fireplace since it was cold outside. It was quiet and I was able to finish a lot of work while I was there. I would definitely recommend this library to groups as well, since they have rooms you can book to do group assignments. The only thing I would say sucks is the parking, I wasn't able to find parking near the library so I had to park at a P lot, which wasn't too expensive. $1 for 1 hour.

Later in life, my high school exam periods were spent here on weekends when not working, studying for tests and getting work done when home seemed too busy to get anything done. Later still in University, I continued to seek solace here from the world outside when I came home from Waterloo on weekends and needed to get things done. It was always a positive study experience. Provided you arrived early enough (aka at opening) and managed to out run the teems of people racing you for a prime seat by a window). I always thought it funny to watch people run like they're about to miss out on a big sale or their bus, up stairs, pushing one another over just for a seat. These days the library is packed with student, you cannot get a seat anytime of day and folks spend a lot of time flirting and talking on their phone in the stacks whilst occupying limited study/work retail. Blah! Not to mention the Wifi is spotty and restricted (no streaming or video watching... not even Youtube) and the cafe on the main floor (which has been there since day 1 of this location) is over-priced and low quality at the best of times. I can't totally slam the place, it's still one of the largest public libraries in the GTA and a central focal point in Richmond Hill as you drive North on Yonge approaching Major Mackenzie. I'll be back again I'm sure, for now it's coffee shops for my working needs!

After many years of service, this public library has experienced abuse from its extensive children's reading section and the expanded computer lab where teenagers spend hours playing online games. The library is definitely good if you have kids -- their children's section has a cute little reading area and they do have group reading events every once in a while. They carry lots of books on tape/CD, as well as movies on VHS and DVD that you would otherwise have to pay for at Blockbuster. Another thing this library is good for is reading material in other languages -- they have a huge selection of books, magazines, and movies in Cantonese and Mandarin, as well as Urdu and other South Asian languages. They have a decent French section including a lot of expensive dictionaries, and they have a huge encyclopedia section upstairs. They also have a couple good study areas if you need some peace and quiet, just go upstairs, away from the kids' section, and silence is yours. Their selection of reference books is much better than other Scarborough libraries, and they usually have a lot of the books in the library itself. They have computers exclusively for searching for materials and reserving them online, and the whole system is easy to use once you get the hang of it. If you're in Scarborough, Agincourt Library is one of the best, and even if you're out of the neighbourhood, this library is decent if you want to actually bring the books home, since you have to leave the books at the Reference Library the way you found them.
