We wanted to grab a few things to munch on while we cruised around Tamar Valley so we stopped at Scottsdale Bakery. It's located in Newnham.
We dropped in on a late Monday morning (11:30am). It was surprisingly busy. There's no seats inside so everyone was getting takeout. Their hours are insane (5:30am to 5:00pm weekdays). Just wow.
They do a bunch of baked items including meat pies, fresh baked bread and pastries (cakes, pies, scrolls, croissants, buns, etc.). Oddly, there's a price list along a random wall but not in the display cases.
- Special carrot cake ($1.00 AUD) - this was dirt cheap because they were slightly overdone. You get what you pay for! The cake was a bit too dry and the icing wasn't very special at all.
- White bun rolls ($2.00 AUD) - all their bread is baked fresh. I spotted a bag of 6 white buns. Nothing particularly mind blowing about them but they were fresh.
- Curries scallop pie ($7.00 AUD) - there's two small scallops inside. The curry sauce slowly grew on me the more I ate it. Not bad but nowhere near the level of the pies we've had elsewhere.
- Orange and almond cake ($4.00 AUD) - this was good. Tasted like orange, sprinkled with pumpkin seeds and an orange rind. Didn't get much almond flavour.
Better than we expected. Long hours and fresh bread. 3.5 stars. read more
