I started my apprenticeship and trying to crafting blades with motivation from a blade magazine.

Meet the Business Owner: Mike S.

In 1992, as a young man, married and with three young children, I started with custom stock removal in a small room in mybasement using mostly old files, 01 tool steel, and some 440c when time allowed. Eventually, my interest grew, and I connected with Glen Brady of Brady Bench Made Knives. He took me under his wing and invited me into his shop, where I learned about heat treating steel and stock removal. Two years later, I attended my first instructional, three-day class with Howard Clark (Morgan Valley Forge), JP Miller, and RB Johnson. I emerged with a wealth of new knowledge and a burning desire to hand-forge Damascus steel. Twenty years later and with over 500 one-of-a-kind knives, I have mastered the skill and appreciate the art of working with Damascus steel.
