Clearly Susan doesn't understand how these businesses work or how vehicles are built. First, there…read moreis a door rate - every auto repair shop has one. That door rate pays the mechanic's wage, the time the shop takes to diagnose and repair your vehicle, utilities, time spent tracking down the parts needed for the repair, the specific knowledge needed to repair your vehicle and so on. If you're in business, you know that you charge for your own labor for whatever it is you might do. Part of your cost breakdown is also your 'intellectual property' - no one gives that away for free. If you do, you're not a very smart business person. A $100/hr door rate is actually pretty cheap. Of course other mechanics undercut that - that's simple business. It doesn't mean they are better - it just means they know a sucker when they see one. Then there's taking apart a vehicle to get to the area that needs repair. This isn't always an easy task, given the manner in which vehicles are built these days. For example, on my van, to get to a certain part, one has to drop the entire engine out of the vehicle to get to that area - so a part of the time spent on labor is just to get the engine out of the way to get to the actual repair. That isn't the fault of the mechanic - that's the auto manufacturer, and you're trying to punish the mechanic/auto repair shop for something beyond their control. You want to be pissed at someone, it's the manufacturer, not the mechanic. Please educate yourself a little before you take your vehicle in for repair before you start chewing out a repair shop and giving them a bad review simply because you are uneducated on the way of business and your own vehicle.
