She apologized profusely for the out of order elevator (it needed a part that was delayed), and offered to help carry our bags to the 2nd floor when she could not find a first floor room for us. We didn't want her to work any harder than she was, so we declined her offer. But by the time we got our luggage, and came back in the front door to go to our room, she had good news. A first floor room had opened up! Cleaning staff was pleasant and helpful, too. When I checked out, the gentleman was friendly and asked about our stay. So staff gets 5 stars. The room was as clean and nice as the lobby - and Heather! It had a king size bed, easy chair, work chair at the desk area, a mini fridge with working freezer, microwave, flat screen TV, clock radio, good lighting, and plenty of outlets. The only unusual part of the room was the shower. It was long and narrow and didn't need a shower curtain. It might have looked strange, but it worked well. 5 stars for the room. The downside of being on the first floor was being under an active early riser. Up at 7, this room above us had someone who paced from the bed to the door to the bed and back again. This person seemed to be bouncing a ball or doing jumping jacks when not pacing. This was something out of Red Roof's control, but the uncarpeted floors did not muffle the sound. We had to get up early, but not THAT early. Due to "sanitary concerns," this Red Roof Inn stopped offering complimentary breakfast. We think it was more of a staffing issue, but it was a minor setback. With McDonald's next door, and Waffle House across the street, we were able to enjoy breakfast for a nominal cost each of the three mornings of our stay. The drawback was the size of our party. Since we were here for a wedding, the first morning we were a party of 9. The next morning, we were a party of 21. It would have been better to eat in the breakfast area. The exit door by our room was supposed to be keyed, but that did not work. So it was not secure for safety. For this, broken elevator, and lack of breakfast, 3 stars. Our room was not expensive, and it was comfortable. As I said before, we were here for a wedding, and the accommodations were fine for this. Many of the attendees were at this hotel, so we were able to carpool to the venues, and to visit with each other in our rooms before the big day and afterwards. For this, 5 stars. We decided since this hotel was nice looking on the outside, and had some pretty good reviews. We stopped in (approximately 7:00 pm). Veronica (front desk) was exceptionally nice. We asked for a bottom floor room. She had a (1) bed and a (2) bed available. I'm REALLY picky on a NICE clean updated room. (I really didn't expect it at a "Day's Inn")... But, we were pleasantly surprised. Veronica said the owner keeps this hotel updated and freshly remolded regularly. Another surprise was the price of a (1 Queen bed 2 Adults)... Only $80 bucks total. I have a foot injury that can't get wet, so I did have to take several baths in the tub. It's definitely not mold. I think it's staining from hard water - the buttons on my room's phone didn't work to connect to the front desk (not a huge deal but for someone with mobility issues, having to go to the front desk would be annoying) Honestly I could (and do) overlook most of the cons but the mildew smell is really icky. If the hotel didn't do so many other things right, I would rate it a 2 stars based on the smell. But they do a fantastic job in so many other ways! Truly they do. I've stayed here every time I visit family in the area because it's such a comfortable hotel (when my husband and I were dating we also had weekend trysts here lol). The evening we were there, they were hosting a witches' high tea (with costumes included), which looked like so much fun. Unfortunately, we already had tickets to The Lost Sea, so we had to miss it. The Lost Sea was a unique and fun experience - definitely worth seeing. We also spent some time exploring downtown Sweetwater, which was equally festive for Halloween, quaint, and full of antique stores. The hosts of Whistlestop Manor were incredibly attentive and gracious, anticipating our every need. From a homemade, made-to-order breakfast to snacks, activities for the kids, and suggestions for things to do around town, they really thought of everything. After nine hours on the road, an unhurried, peaceful evening and morning was exactly what my family needed. Such a welcome reprieve from the sterile, cramped atmosphere of a hotel (blah). My 11-year-old immediately wanted to know when we were coming back. He's already planning a summer visit so he can enjoy the natural lazy river on the property!
