The office environment, the dental x-ray technology and mode of operating the dental equiment is ancient as in 1970s compared to other similar dentists you go to for dental cleaning. How this affects you negatively is that you are not shown your X-rays on a large screen, 4 small slide film X-rays are taken, cleaning and flossing is mild. No take-home tooth maintenance is discussed nor items like tooth pick for hard to reach areas talked about or given. read more

Dr. Pyon is one of the best dentists I've ever had. He takes his time and explains everything thoroughly. His fees are very reasonable and the office lets you know the cost of everything - cleanings, x-rays, restorative work, etc. - BEFORE commencing work. Dr. Pyon does not recommend any procedure that he believes is not absolutely necessary at the moment - a conservative approach I appreciate. Scott is the kind of dentist you never thought you'd find in Palo Alto in 2024. He is meticulous -- he does the cleaning himself rather than handing you off to a hygienist -- and conservative, preferring to keep an eye on potential problems rather than drill-and-fill. The office is well-managed under Martina (Martine?), with appointment reminders. I never have to wait. I'm going to update my review - still a 5-star rating - as it has now been over 6 years since I started seeing Dr Pyon for my regular dental work. That's the longest I've ever stayed with any dentist, so that alone should tell you that I continue to be happy with his work. I've been seeing him every 6 months, with the exception of one canceled visit due to the Covid-19 shutdown. He eventually did fill that cavity that I mentioned in my original review from 2015, and I've had no problems with it since then. He continues to monitor a couple small pits in my teeth but fortunately these have not worsened. He did notice some acid erosion of my enamel a few years ago, and after following his advice to change toothpaste and mouthwash it hasn't been an ongoing problem. Regarding Covid-19, he has made the necessary changes to keep his patients safe. He rotates treatment rooms and has reduced his patient volume so that any one room is empty for a full hour before the next patient sits down. His attention is safety is great, wearing a double mask and a face shield and limiting conversation during his work. He does a temperature check of both the patient and himself before proceeding. I've now seen him twice since the start of the pandemic (one visit was pre-vaccination), and I was comfortable both times. Otherwise, things haven't really changed too much in the office. His receptionist still keeps track of appointment in a handwritten calendar and calls with a reminder a couple days before my appointment. Dr Pyon still does all his own work and takes his time doing it. I'm still completely satisfied with him and expect to keep seeing him for the indefinite future. read more

Can confirm that Dr. Pyon is operating during these frustrating times. I'm not sure if he is taking new clients, but he saw me yesterday for a cleaning after not seeing me for probably a year at this point. He picked right back up with my records. He was very careful with cleanliness regarding the current pandemic, and thoroughly explained to me the procedures he was taking to keep At this point, I'm going to note that I have been seeing Dr. Pyon for years, before moving to another state for college. I found another dentist in New York, and thought everything was dandy, but I'm just lucky that Scott caught these mistakes. My previous dentist didn't drill deep enough, and my cavities just grew under my fillings, and were far worse than the teeth that my NY dentist *didn't* touch! Dr. Pyon was able and willing to explain to me how to 'read' X-rays and how to discern enamel/fillings from cavities, which made it all the easier to trust and understand him. Not to mention, he has managed to slot me in for the next 2 weeks to get those teeth fixed up. Although I have gotten good recommendations from friends about Dr. Pyon, he is not vaccinated or boosted against Covid-19, and this is out of compliance with California law. Upwards of 94% of all dentists are vaccinated in California. His office does not disclose that he is not vaccinated unless you ask directly. "Health care workers must show proof of vaccination or submit to regular testing. To help slow the spread of the delta variant and protect access to essential health care services, California issued an order today requiring all health care workers in the state to either show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or be tested weekly." Given that there is no way not to have an open mouth during any dental procedures, this is an unacceptable risky practice. Please get vaccinated and boosted Dr. Pyon! read more

Dr. Pyon is a pretty skilled dentist. However, the equipment is pretty old and dated. Getting dental cleaning done there is like a step back in time. It's charming in a way, depending on your style. I am so thankful I found Dr. Pyon! I went in for a cleaning today and wanted to get a back tooth that was chipped fixed and was real surprised at the care. **quick background: I have incredibly sensitive teeth. Like drinking chilled water will make my skin crawls and my bones freeze. The pain radiates to my skull and it's just awful. Every single cleaning I've had requires lidocaine injections and I STILL feel the discomfort from the scraping. I am also 21 weeks pregnant. I went into this appointment really anxious and already feeling that sensitivity into my bones. Dr. Pyon introduced himself warmly and eased me into my cleaning explaining how some of my habits may contribute to my sensitive teeth. He took the time to explain all the ways that I could slow down the process and it really was appreciated. After about 10-15 minutes he began to work on me. He said he would be careful not to cause pain from my sensitivity but I saw still anxious because he wasn't able to give me lidocaine injections due to my pregnancy. After he completed the front top row I was shocked because it's generally the most sensitive part of my mouth. Not once did I flinch. Once he was done scraping with the metal tool I had only flinched 1 time and it was a tooth on the lower row. Afterwards he told me that he didn't clean my teeth any more gently than he normally would and that my teeth were actually fine. I doubt this was the case because I know my teeth, they get sensitive al the time to random things. But Dr. Pyon was incredibly gentle on my teeth. I asked for fluoride treatment and instead of doing the treatment and charging me he recommended that I do fluoride rinse once a day. I felt that Dr. Pyon is incredibly honest, won't do procedures that is unnecessary and is really conservative. His office reminded me of my childhood dental office back in LA so it felt familiar. I'm incredibly pleased with Dr. Pyon and have already booked a cleaning for my husband and my follow up for 6 months! read more

See the 7/4/2021 review from Lee L. but please know that as of this review date (9/23/2021) Dr. Pyon has chosen not to be vaccinated for Covid-19. I was uncomfortable with that, so I declined the check-up and left quickly. We were both polite about it and I told him that I may return after the pandemic. I recently arrived in the bay area, and was looking to find a permanent general dentist. Before my appointment, I had some small pain in my front bicuspid and inflamed gumlines. All of this is very abnormal for me. Although Dr. Pyon is very nice and has a gentle touch, he was not thorough at all. He did not check my night guard to see how it was sitting in my mouth - which is standard at check-ins to make sure no fine adjustments need to be completed to prevent pressure points. He did not measure my gumline even though he mentioned I am starting to show I had receding gumlines. He also claimed my tooth pain was just simply from an acidic diet and that I need to dial back on coffee and citric fruits (which I don't indulge in very often). The cleaning was also not as detailed as I would have liked. Flash forward a week, my gums are still inflamed and bleeding, and the gums had become more inflamed. I decided to go out and get a second opinion. Boy did Dr. Pyon miss some big things. Turns out I have a moderate-severe vertical crack down my front bicuspid from chronic clenching of my teeth. This led to an abfraction near the gumline which has exposed the cementin on my tooth. Additionally, my new dentist measured my gumlines, checked my night-guard bite stance, and closely inspected my teeth. She found many teeth had 6mm gum pockets which signals a dire need for deep cleaning to flush out the inflammation and get them to tighten up. Currently, I am going in for two rounds of deep cleaning and then will potentially attempt a superficial frontal filling to protect the cemention before considering a crown, which I will probably need later in the future. I would say for those who have no dental problems what-so-ever and are just there to get your teeth cleaned quickly with zero frills, Dr. Pyon is a great choice. As always, trust your gut. Mine told me he missed something and man was I right. Now I am currently on track to get my problem fixed. If I had waited till my next checkup, this problem could have been significantly worse. read more

I love Dr. Pyon, he's an excellent dentist. He's very, very through with his exams, but the best part is he is frugal so he doesn't suggest or do anything unnecessary. After going to the same dentist for 17 years, I started to have concerns.. My mom has been going to Dr Pyon for a few years now and suggested I see him. This is one example of why you should listen to your mother. Dr Pyon does his own cleaning, which in itself, is so great. It's more efficient this way and he can see what is going on in your mouth. I have gone to great hygienists over the years, but none were as through as he is. Additionally, he gives all kinds of advice on how to care for your teeth. Amazing. Today, I had an emergency to find a general dentist as having pain in one of my teeth was very bad. My prior doctor had passed away two years ago and had not seen a dentist in between due to insurance changes. Dr. Pyon's office manager was very professional and scheduled an immediate same day appointment at 4:45 PM, last one as the office closes at 5. She was very understanding and professional. Dr. Pyon, took x-rays, provided in-depth issue analysis of the existing root canal, crown, possible causes for the inflation, the complete procedure options with endodontist involvement and biology behind such infection and cost options related to procedure options. Reasons I like Dr. Pyon: 1) Appointments are always on time. I never have to wait. 2) He always does the cleaning himself, rather than having a dental hygienist do it. 3) He always makes me aware of all of my options, and never tries to push the expensive ones. For example, when I was thinking of whitening my teeth, he said I could: a) use Rembrandt toothpaste, b) buy Crest whitening strips, or c) get professional whitening done by the dentist. He said toothpaste was quite effective and by far the least expensive option, and even recommended that I go buy it at Costco. 4) He has never found any cavities since I've been seeing him (for about 3 years). My family has been seeing Dr. Pyon since he took over Dr. Bace's practice. We liked Dr. Bace because he is "old school." Dr. Pyon was the perfect dentist to take over the practice. So many dentists these days focus on expensive equipment and cosmetic procedures and want to fill every grey spot on the x-rays and provide every expensive procedure available. Dr. Pyon is the opposite. He's prefers to "watch" small, harmless cavities. He's great about explaining all the options, giving his opinion, but letting the patient make the final call, knowing that there often isn't one "right" answer. When I told him my wisdom teeth were starting to give me pain, he calmly and evenly described to me my options. Importantly, he didn't tell me right away to get them out. Dentists are always in a conflict of interest here, I think, because if you get your wisdom teeth out they make money off of it. Well, Dr. Pyon isn't like most dentists. He said he didn't get his last wisdom tooth out until he was 40! And so I trusted his opinion when he gave me all the options. In the end, he referred me to a great oral surgeon (Dr. Scott Baird) and I got all four out. It was a good price (important for me because I'm a student), and it's been a year now with no additional problems. I really appreciated Dr. Pyon's honesty when dealing with this issue, and have continued going to him for regular cleanings ever since. Great dentist!! read more

This dude is so chill. I had misgivings when sitting in the office. It looked seriously outdated, like something from a bygone era at least one or two decades ago. Got seated in a dentist's chair, finally, about 10 minutes after my appt. The guy is pleasant, but to the point, not a lot of chit chat. I'm not much of a chit chat person, however, so no biggee. Now, I hadn't seen a dentist in over 3 years, due to the oh-so-frackked-up economy having collapsed, and so it was a deep cleaning the guy gave me, and it lasted about 30-40 minutes. Given how encrusted my teeth were by this point, that it didn't hurt more, I am giving this dentist dude props. I sat, completely horizontal, scrape, scrape, metal tools scraping at my teeth calcifications, trying to turn it into some submissive headspace where the pain feels good, but there wasn't enough pain to send me over. And when I asked about teeth whitening, I love how he drew on a piece of paper how hydrogen peroxide tries its hardest to convert to... oxygen, or water, I can't remember, but his little drawing of an oxygen molecule trying to leap into the air, loosen itself from its chemical bonds, was inspiring. You might not like this guy if you're looking for high-end frills, a lot of pomp & circumstance. But he's polite, to the point, and this is the first time I've ever been to a dentist where I haven't gotten chided, made to feel bad for not flossing. Cuz he's chill like that, he doesn't press the issue, he instead does his job, provides you with a service. I like people like this. read more

I've lived all over the place and with each move, I dread having to find a good doctor, dentist and hairstylist. I was in need of a cleaning so I turned to Yelp to see how the dentists rated in Palo Alto and I read these rave reviews about Dr Pyon so I made an appointment. I was able to get an appointment within a week which is almost unheard of. When I arrived, he was the only one in the office. So he handed me all the paperwork to fill out which was minimal compared to other offices. I was impressed that he actually READ my paperwork because he addressed the two things I check off on the patient form. I've been to so many dentists, doctors, massage therapists etc where they have you fill out a patient form yet never seem to read the darn thing. So it was nice he actually paid attention! OK, onto the exam and cleaning. I usually have my teeth cleaned 2x a year but with this last move, it had been about 11 months. With all the cleanings I have by numerous dental offices around the country, Dr Pyon's was the best! He was super thorough, yet gentle. In fact, I was very close to falling asleep in his chair during my cleaning. I would highly recommend Dr. Pyon! His office is not state of the art, it's not fancy. I finally found him -- the world's one and only non self-righteous dentist! I needed my teeth cleaned. The first five-star dentist I called said that they needed to make a 1.5 hour "introductory appointment". And that they wouldn't even clean my teeth in that first appointment. I would THEN have to make another appointment for teeth cleaning. And the first introductory appointment was about a month out. No thanks! I called instead to Dr Pyon's and got an appointment for the next day. And I was in and out in 45 min flat. No nonsense! And, there was no lecturing about not flossing enough, etc, etc. It was great. Dr. Pyon is the man, he is everything you can ask for in a dentist and more. He does everything himself and always walks you through everything he is doing. He is a nice guy who doesn't try to make random small talk so conversation feels natural and not forced. I had a small cavity recently (first one in forever since I went on a Mountain Dew binge) and he squeezed me in and got it done super fast. He showed me the cavity, gave me my options but didn't upsell me anything and showed me the whole process as he did it. Logistically his office is in a nice part of California ave. It's a basic office but given you aren't spending 30 minutes to an hour waiting its perfect. Paperwork is a breeze and you are in and out in 30 minutes. I lived in Indiana and now in LA now but every time I'm home I make sure to set up an appointment with him. He seats you down, does not talk much, and there is soft classical playing while you get your teeth done. So relaxing. I almost fall asleep in that chair each time I go. I came to him after a bad dental experience for him to figure out what may have gone wrong and how to fix it. He gave me all the details, listened carefully, walked me through everything, and gave me all my options. He ended up fixing the problem in the end and I couldn't be happier. I originally looked up Dr Kim but was told Dr Pyon was taking over while she was on maternity leave. Since I am not particularly picky I accepted the appointment. I went in for a wisdom teeth consultation and before I knew it, he was prepping me for extractions! (He did recommend me for oral surgery for one of my wisdom tooth) He was very friendly and was very thorough in explaining what I was going to go through, the risks, etc. When testing for my gum numbness he was very careful to make sure I was completely numb and even when I felt pain the middle of the extraction, he didn't make a big fuss about giving me more anesthesia. Dr. Pyon is my kinda dentist! Here's what I loved: - relatively easy to get an appointment - relatively quick appointment (out the door in 45 minutes including intake forms, x-rays, and cleaning) - the Dr. did my cleaning himself - he didn't try to sell me a d@*n thing! His office is super small--both he and the receptionist greeted me when I walked in--and I didn't have to wait for even a second (granted, I was the first appointment of the day, so your wait time may vary). Dr. Pyon cleaned my teeth, didn't hassle me about my less-than-stellar flossing habits, and sent me on my merry way. Most important (to me anyway) he didn't try to sell me any fancy toothbrushes, high powered mouth washes, or locally sourced enamel repairing pixies. I have to thank yelp on helping me find Dr. Pyon. I just needed a dentist that would do annual or semi-annual cleaning for me and general maintenance. I saw that Dr. Pyon would accept my insurance (Delta Dental and now Principal) so I decide to go for him. Dr. Pyon's office is definitely not the newest nor does he have the newest equipment but it's all clean and works fine. He explains everything about your teeth by drawing out little diagrams and pictures. He doesn't pressure you into cavity fillings especially if they are small. He really seems to have your best interest in mind. When I first started coming to Dr. Pyon my wisdom teeth were protruding from my gums, making my mouth sore to a point that it was hard for me to eat. Instead of telling me that I needed to go see a surgeon, he pulled out my wisdom teeth like it was a regular procedure. He saved me a lot of money and time! In 2005, I visited to extract my wisdom tooth. Very nervous but luckily Dr. Pyon was nice (5 stars). No friendly hello from the receptionist (-1 star). Then comes his rough handling, wrestling with my wisdom tooth! Aaahhh!! such a horrible experience (-2 stars). The receptionist advised me of a future bill coming to me after they submit their claims while I was leaving their office with a headache. They supposedly sent me my bill for $93 copay which I did not receive since I moved. But as soon as I got my mail forwarded to my new home, I got a collections notice! I sent in my payment obviously, but it's still looks bad on my report. I am just disappointed that I never got a call about this before they sent it in to collections. The fee was so small that I couldn't even remember it when walking out of their office. (-1 star). read more

I have lived in Palo Alto since 1962 and while teaching at Stanford, we were able to select among the "best" dentists in the area. Then with retirement and the increased costs of dental care, I searched for alternatives and found Dr. Scott Pyon -- and what a revelation. His care, advice, specialist referrals have been excellent. He does the twice-per-year cleaning himself and therefore knows firsthand the problems as they develop, matched against carefully kept records. My last visit for a cleaning was the first since the onset of COVID-19. He explained all of the precautions that he takes, wiping all surfaces and contact points between patients' well-spaced visits. He is meticulous, efficient, and friendly, with a staff of one, who tends the phones and handles the records -- also friendly and efficient. So, if you want good dentistry, without the big staff, coffee service, plush waiting, areas, AND expensive, mostly unnecessary, preventive procedures, I highly recommend Dr. Scott Pyon. read more

I'd like to preface this by saying that I think Dr. Pyon is a nice man who is a good dentist. However, his "chair-side manner" made me so uncomfortable that this was my first and last visit to his office. When I arrived to have a chipped tooth bonded, he was the only one there because it was a Saturday. As this was my first visit and I don't know much about dentistry, I asked him if it would be difficult to match the bonding already on my tooth (only part of it chipped off). His answer was something like, "Do you not trust me?" And I said, "I don't know. I don't know you." A simple, "Oh, I've done this lots of times. It's a very simple procedure" would have done the trick. It put me on the defensive right away. So we go back to the dentist chair and I ask him about orthodontia because my teeth have moved since I had my braces taken off. I explained a procedure to him that my brother had done, to which he replied -- after admitting that he is not an Orthodontist -- that it was impossible and "phony." He could tell I was upset and I explained (as nicely as I could) that I had, in fact, not only seen the procedure done on my brother but that it worked quite nicely, thankyouverymuch. He then asked me if I wanted to proceed with the bonding, which I did only because I had been walking around with a chipped tooth for weeks. At this point, I should say that during the actual procedure, he was very good at explaining what he was doing and I am happy with the result. At the END of the procedure, he told me that my SS# was required for billing. Again, it was frustrating that he didn't tell me this before the procedure, at which point I could have re-scheduled after consulting with my insurance company. I called the insurance to see if that was true but no one answered because it was a Saturday. I considered paying for it up front and while I was wavering, he proceeded to take 3 different patients' billing information (with SS#'s on them) out of their files and show them to me to convince me that the SS# was required. I was in awe and said to him, "That's exactly why I don't want to give you my Social Security number!" I felt EXTREMELY uncomfortable giving it to him after that. By the time I left, I was almost in tears. I'll find someone else to clean my teeth. read more

Here are some reasons why: - Dr. Pyon personally performs every procedure. In particular, he performs routine cleanings himself, so he can clinically observe every tooth and spot problems as they appear. - For every problem (from wisdom teeth to a cavity), Dr. Pyon explains in detail how the situation could evolve, the available options, and their pros and cons. Then he lets the patient choose whether to intervene (and how) or whether to wait and see, with no pressure whatsoever. I always felt that I was fully in charge of my health care and well-informed, with an amazingly expert advisor at my side. - Dr. Pyon takes great care to explain every step of what he is doing, so one always feels involved. I like the no-nonsense environment but I don't think that he is a good dentist. I had more pain with my filling than I've had with other dentists and the bite isn't as even as I would have liked. The cleaning was decent. The office was a bit ghetto. read more
