I'm at the library almost everyday, and when you're here so often, you see a lot more of what happens. The workers are so judgmental and fake. A lot of the lower class patrons come because of all the resources offered, and when they leave, I watch the workers laugh and make fun of them. They also don't like your small children unless they are 101% well behaved, and that is obviously not going to happen. Having experience myself, you can never expect a child who is still learning to be perfect! It's ridiculous! A struggling mom is just that: struggling and doesn't need more judgment. They all stand behind the circulation desk judging and gossiping about the people that are there, it disgusts me. Of course, when someone approaches for help, they put on their best smile until their back is turned. Sometimes they ignore people when they walk up until they speak up about a problem they are having.
When I say "judgmental", there are different types. One likes to talk bad about you, but hides behind display cases. One is just very grouchy and glares. One is blatant and open about it. One uses certain phrases when speaking to you as if you're a child. There are many more, but I don't want to spend a lot of time on this. They all just stare at you and if you can read body language you can tell. It doesn't help that when they talk about you, it's obvious when they keep looking at you and whispering.
No matter how polite you are, they don't respond well if they have a preconceived notion about you from just watching you. I thought it was just in my head, but I corroborated with a friend and she said the same, and even spoke of their open rudeness to her.
The condescending way they speak to others is horrible as well. It's a mixture of sarcasm, judgments, looks, and coated with sweetness. They speak to you like you're a toddler, but watch you like you're a criminal. I don't understand. If they hate their job so much, then work somewhere else. It's just a library. Do we need to have signs like at Planet Fitness that say "no judgment zone"?
The library itself is beautiful, especially with the renovations, but the workers are enough to make me never want to step foot in it again. I have lived in Scott County for 16 years now, but have never noticed this until the past summer. I thought it was just me being weird or something, but after months and months of observing, I CANNOT hold this in and it NEEDS to be known.
