A little disappointed in the food after reading some of the reviews, but I think I'd still go back again. The views and the atmosphere are what make this place, anyway, not the food.
Scorch-O-Rama has a lovely view facing onto Scorching Bay (Karaka Bay), with plenty of casual outdoor seating right on the water's edge. The walls inside are papered with (fake) comic book titles, which gives the place kind of a colourful, child-like vibe, but in an appealing way. The menu is also quite entertaining to read.
The service was great (French guy) and surprisingly prompt for a busy Sunday morning. The queue waiting for take-away coffee actually took longer than the queue for sit-down service.
I cam with my parents. My dad ordered "Le Toast" (French toast with fried bananas on top), my mom ordered the "Hulk Smash" (smashed avo on toast with dukkah, red pepper hummus, and rocket), and I ordered the "Buck In Oats" (oats and buckwheat muesli with raspberry chia stuff and coconut yogurt, a poached pear and a carmelised apple).
My parents enjoyed theirs, but agreed they were both pretty pricey for the portion size. Mine was more filling, I think, but not as tasty. I wasn't wild about the raspberry chia, and the coconut yogurt was just plain gross. But I loved how my dish was liberally sprinkled with grains, nuts and seeds and I felt very healthy afterward, ha. If I went back, I'd get the "Hulk Smash" (what my mom had) -- I sampled it and loved the hummus especially.
Vegan and gluten-free items are clearly-marked on the menu (the vegan options were "Hulk Smash," "Buck In Oats," fries, and many of the smoothies). They also do your usual variety of hipster beverages like kombucha and alcoholic milkshakes and the like.
All in all, great for a weekend brunch if you're on this side of town or want to enjoy a beautiful view with your meal, but I wouldn't hurry over here. read more
