I'm pleased to be giving the Cornershop Barber Shop, its' first review in 2016 and only second in…read morethe past 12 months, and I'm pleased to announce, it is still quite a nice place to go for a haircut. As regular readers of my reviews will know, I'm with Jonny Q and Michael B on this one, I hate having my haircut done and hate the awkwardness of chit-chat with my barber, and just want to get in and out of a place, with minimal effort, this place is right by Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter, opposite the Old Koffeepot on the corner of Hilton Street. It is quite a nice place, and it charges £10 for a haircut which isn't bad considering I'm used to paying £15 at Supercuts and Kim-Creative.Com in the Arndale. The barber was nice enough, he wasn't as friendly as I've seen before at the other places listed above, but he did do a quick haircut, upon request at 6 minutes. Overall, the haircut was okay until he used the scissors, it felt like he went on for hours, being really heavy handed, cutting big chunks of hair with the scissors, and then banging the comb on my head near enough every-time, which shown hints of aggression and perhaps it being too rushed, this probably felt like the longest part of my haircut, even though looking back it was probably nothing more than 1/3 of the time taken, but if you would of told me that part of the haircut, took double what the whole haircut taken, I would have believe you. I got a decent haircut as well, which was much better than other cuts I have had before, but perhaps still not as good as Supercuts in the Manchester Arndale. It is also open on a Sunday between 12 and 6pm which is handy, and when I visited, it didn't seem really busy and I got seated and my haircut straight away. I noticed they did have a few newspapers on the table for people to look at while waiting. My search for a barbershop has been a long one, I've devoted a long list to find one on Yelp, I hope now my search is over. I hope this place doesn't suffer with "Second-time barber blues", I continue to get a lot so for now, I feel it only deserves a 3. UPDATE: I now feel Cornershop deserves a single one star rating mainly down to a huge decline in service and the overall finished haircut of late, the fact they don't do appointments and often leave you waiting with the staff not seeming overly friendly makes the situation worse also.

Anyone who regularly reads my reviews will know my constant battle to find a good haircut with…read moreminimal effort. Not only do I struggle with "barber talk" but the fact that it usually takes a good hour to get my pretty short hair cut makes me want to spend that time doing something much more fun. That usually results in me carrying what can only be described as a birds nest around on my head for a much more desired time period than is acceptable! But for no more - yesterday at the Barbers on Stevenson square opposite Koffee pot, I was in and out within 20 minutes, loved my new haircut and it only cost me £10. All the guys working there were pretty friendly and up for a chat about the local bar scene and that suits me just fine. If you're after a quick cut, walk in service then this place is just for you.

On my visit i received a "Traditional Wet Shave" which was so relaxing to the point of nearly falling asleep. They is parking close by to the store but I think it is double yellow lines so unless you have a disabled badge they will be trouble. The store amazes you when you come in, with a TV, plane seats and a spaceman, they often quote Neil Armstrong with a male grooming twist. I booked an appointment and had a short wait when I arrived due to the person I booked with, just going off to the shop for a prolonged period hence I had to go to another barber. They offer you biscuits as well as hot beverages, vimto, beer and water, being coeliac I just stuck with water. My drink took quite a long while to come, having been offered it as soon as I arrived, only getting it a good time later. My barber I feel talked too much about topics that were quite irritating, he often repeated himself and treated me like I was an uneducated infant for quite a while. I spoke to him about me liking Frank Sinatra, and another barber joined in and mentioned of his love for the singer and put a few of his songs on. I feel they are trying too hard here and can seem abit irritating and struggle on service, I feel if they narrow down abit and still put effort in it would be much better, they just try to hard and can't put 110 percent into everything. My haircut took nearly an hour and was very long and after a while it got really frustrating as they were just messing around, trying to make it an experience. For £10, I espect a good haircut, I don't care if it takes 20 seconds as long as I get a fantastic haircut, I admit I had a very good haircut but this experience was draining lasting so long, and costing £10, I feel a quicker haircut would please customers more and make more money for the business. Overall, they are trying to hard and lots of minor things really make a business which really does stand out, seem poor, the only good thing about the place was the original look and my haircut, which I feel deserves for it to be 2 stars but for everything else, especially it being so drawn out and costing a city centre price for somewhere a good mile away from the city centre of CHADDERTON and a few miles from the city centre of Oldham is really not worth it. Normally, I have my haircut every 6 weeks or so however I need a haircut again, just under a month after coming here which will add to my big cost of haircuts this month after paying £10 for a long, drawn out experience here, so I am quite disappointed with Niall spending so much time on my hair and simply, not doing my hair-cut to the best of his ability. I won't be returning until the pricing is sorted out, they focus more on the minor things rather than trying so hard and can do the haircut quicker with better results. My search for a great barber shop continues....

Although absolutely tiny, sat there all forlorn on the point where Palatine road and Wilmslow road converge, inside it's like that 'space box' in which the Doctor fella drives female companions around the bends of space and time. Seriously, you'll wonder how they manage to fit in a small tub of American Salon hair cream never mind space for three hairdressing points, a reception, bathroom and mini kitchen. I'm convinced it's all done with smoke and mirrors but I'm too under the kosh of sharp scissors to ask about it. Apparently (I was told by staff this very week) this used to be a small depot for conductors being based as it is on the busiest bus route in Europe and not as most people assume a public convenience. Five years ago this was morphed into it's current role as a barbershop. Alan who used to own this place has now for Australia and left the shop to Mike who along with Mike now run the place. They're lovely guys full of mirth, intelligence and most importantly can cut hair very well. These kind of places are important to the fabric of the Withington community and it looks like this place will do well for many, many years. No appointment is necessary although Saturdays can get very busy, so try and get there just after it opens (10am) to avoid a little wait (they'll never rush a cut to appease the waiting customers mind).

One thing I dislike about this branch is a lack of appointments, meaning at any time you could obviously turn up and end up waiting hours on end, I had even been given waiting times of two or three hours at one point, and I've even been turned away at times when I'd expect them to be quiet, towards the end of the day before close when they're not. The staff don't seem really friendly at all, I've even seen staff go outside to smoke with customers waiting. It does look really nice here, and I've always wanted to call in for a haircut but I'm just sick and tired of the waiting, if they are used to this demand they should move somewhere else in Manchester, expand and get more staff as their is a demand for it and right now that is sacrificing levels of service and the overall feel, which are terrible I'm sorry to report that with regret BarberBarber deserves one star at this moment in time - I hate having my haircut and I hate being sat there in the chair for ages, let alone having to wait hours on end for a haircut which still is overpriced and one of the highest prices in Manchester at over £17 for a dry-cut meanwhile for some reason the branch in Leeds is 10% cheaper. From a service point of view, this branch needs to improve asap or this place is going to turn away and frustrate more and more customers and turn them to many of the rival barbers in Manchester city centre.

The free drinks is a nice touch although not really appropriate when I like to go in at 10am. The queue is ridiculous at times, even with all 4 chairs in full swing, an hour or more is common for a hair cut. This place is a modern classic - the guys are friendly and well trained, and the place is obviously clean and well run. The boom of lumberjack beards in Manchester doesn't do anything to help the queue time as once self-respecting men now debate which beard oil to opt for, or how thick to keep their sideburns. For a simple guy with a simple hair cut, I do love the attention to detail here, but not sure I'll keep returning for long if I have to commit half of my Saturday to waiting, for a 10 minute sit in the barber chair. Having said that, I really can't fault the place.
