Leaving the Museum of Life and Sciences' Science of Wine event last night, I will admit I was a little star struck. What just happened, I thought to myself, as images of wine, cheese and tasty treats danced through my head. This was (*I think*) my fourth "After Hours" event at the Life and Science Museum, and by far the best. I learned some important tips attending this event: be ready to wait in line. These events are set up in a style where the vendors are all at tables and typically have conversations with each patron sampling their products. Lines usually move slowly. BUT [pro tip] you can jump from table to table! Most people wait in a long line as each patron has their interaction, leaving the following table sometimes completely empty, show some love and jump around! Second tip: as the night goes on, the event will become less crowded. But as the same time, it's important to show up on time because some activities must be signed up for and sign-ups might run out (grab a map when you check in and ask about any one-time activities).
Third, take your time! These events are long for a reason, there's lot to see and do, don't rush yourself or feel overwhelmed by the long lines or crowds. I loved having the Wine and Design team at this event, it gave me a time to take a break from the lines (let them die out a little) and enjoy a little relaxed time (I painted a tiny hydrangea!) Now onto the vendors at this specific event: awesome! Although the pairing of wine to food was a little off at times, I feel that overall I was able to enjoy and try a huge variety of items including bread, cheese, mead, wine and chocolate. I loved the science experiments that were thrown in here and there along the way. I definitely didn't see everything, but you can't miss [in order of how I visited]: Starrlight Mead (their apple cider mead will make you re-think life choices), Southern Harvest Catering's artichoke dip (and super-taster science experiment), Escazu Artisan Chocolate's Pumpkin Seeds & Guajillo Chile chocolate bar and Southern Season's large array of wine, cheese, chocolates and meats (you really can't miss the Southern Season's table!!) And let's not forget Boulted Bread's fantastic toasted sesame seed bread, Chapel Hill Creamery and Boxcarr Handmade Cheese. Fair Game Beverage Company's peach wine and Chapel Hill Toffee. Oh and The Wine Feed (I could drink that Rose and Cava all night long!), not to mention The Little Dipper's dill and havarti cheese fondue which tasted like a crisp bottle of white! Throw in a little canned wine from Queen of Wines and some Sangria from Mystic Bourbon plus a little chemistry schooling on decanting vs. non decanting and your evening is made. Believe me, that just skims the surface.
I got a fortune cookie from Lilly at the Yelp Table and it should've read, "you're in for the Yelp-tasticest evening of your wine and cheese loving-life!" Or something about having a fabulous night. What a great evening, highly recommend! read more
