It feels funny to be the first to review a place as old as the Schlossstheater Schönbrunn. One of the questions that Yelp asks you is - "Did this establishment open recently?' Well no - actually it opened about 275 years ago!
The Theatre at Schloss Schönbrunn is a great place to see theatre or hear music. This atmospheric Baroque theatre was opened during the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa in 1745 and was designed by one of her court architects - Niklaus Pacassi. Yes it is filled with red velvet and chandeliers, murals and marble. But what you might see there these days might be as contemporary as the morning newspaper's headlines. Such was the case when I saw a totally cool student musical here from the venerable University of Musik und Darstellender Kunst. It dealt with the issue of 'fake news' being used by populist politicians around the world today and was impressively staged and sung. And in a twist - the audience sat on stage and the singers and band were in the theatre where the audience usually sits. The Schönbrunner Schloss Theatre is another one of Vienna's performing arts gems. read more
