I'm a patient of the cardiac electrophysiology/cath lab. This spring, I had a loop monitor implanted under my skin to track my heart rhythm. It was a straightforward procedure that took about 10 minutes--albeit surprisingly costly as I received a $3K bill after insurance. By fall, my condition had improved and I no longer needed the device. My physician ordered the removal in October. I was told the EP lab would contact me within a couple of weeks to schedule the procedure, but no one reached out. In November and December, I called at least five times to schedule this simple removal. Each time, I was told the nurse responsible for scheduling was in a meeting or out of the office, and that someone would call me back the next day. No one ever did. Because of these unexplained scheduling delays, the procedure will not be completed before the end of the year. My insurance resets at year-end, which means these delays will likely cost me several thousand dollars in additional, unavoidable out-of-pocket expenses. Two weeks ago, I contacted Patient Relations for help. I explained that scheduling the removal before year-end would save me thousands, and asked them to either fit me in for this quick procedure or confirm I wouldn't be personally charged since the hospital's delays pushed the procedure past the 2025 cutoff. I still haven't received a call back. The clinical staff at UC Davis have been professional and knowledgeable, and I have no complaints about the quality of care. But the administrative bureaucracy and lack of follow-through make accessing that care difficult and (in my case) unreasonably costly.

They are all about the money. I was given an IV. After 2 tries, I had to ask for a new nurse because she blew through 2 veins. Mind you I have given blood over 50 times without that ever happening. She blames it on the antiquated needles they use. Then comes the test. They strap me to a table. Put a blood pressure cuff on my left arm. I ask for a bigger cuff, nurse says no, big one is broken. What I'm in a hospital. Then put another hand cuff on right hand. Which throughout the whole test was not working. Tech fooling with it the whole test. The nurse was shopping for houses on Zillow during the whole test. Every 5 minutes she got up and took my blood pressure which probably wasn't correct anyway. My blood pressure spiked during test as she frantically texts doctor. Test is over everything normal, yeah right. Then the kicker, look at the notes. Dr. Fan says he personally examined me and was present during the whole test. Never met this doctor so more money for UC Davis. I will be filing for a grievance. I will not ever go back to UC Davis again. I have had horrible care for 4 years. Thank goodness I have a new insurance so I can go to Sutter.

After I got home from my Echo appointment, I remembered I forgot to bring with me my current results of my blood work for my file and for the doctor to review. I called the office when I got home and asked if I could mail the results in, but was informed that I had to bring them in to be scanned. I informed the person that the blood work was done at the 30th & Q Street Quest Lab, and asked if they were able to obtain the results from Quest. I was, again, informed I had to bring them in to the office to be scanned. Today, I personally brought the results of my blood work into the office and explained I was told over the phone to bring in the results so they could get scanned The person at the front desk stated she had to check with the doctor's assistant. When she returned she informed me I didn't need to bring in the results because they were already in the system. When she was telling me that, she made me feel like I was bothering her and that she was annoyed with me. I was only doing what I was instructed on the phone to do.

However the office staff are often frazzled and unorganized. Probably because they have to work super hard with lots of competing priorities. But nonetheless, patients shouldn't have to wait on hold for 5 minutes, should be called to remind about appointments. Last time I called to check my appt., the girl said I had no appt. He is a 16yr old male who developed an ERP or abnormal EKG of early repolarization which means his heart does not normally repolarize and he has a constant ST elevation found at Methodist ER. He went for a cardiology consult through Sutter pediatric cardiology, hes continued to have a low systolic for his age, height, weight. He had a diagnoses of "pulmonary valve insufficiency" and they wrote "unknow etiology" and failed to have him wear a montior thus being able to say they are ignorant of his systolic blood pressue being continually low. They have not given me his dicated report for his TEE. We visited Sutter Medical Group and his primary care doctor had nothing to say about his systolic blood pressure being under 100, and no request to monitor him. When I asked for online access to medical information and records it was denied by his doctor Sherman and the the privacy team N. Sozan. This is a barrier to care and parents should not be denied access to their childrens records online especially in light of this medical condition.

Dr. Aryana performed a cardiac ablation procedure on me approximately 4 years ago. It has been…read moresuccessful and I have not had a recurrence of atrial fibrillation. The procedure is not without risk of serious complications, however, atrial fibrillation comes with it's own set of risks. In my case, anti-coagulants had not worked as I had a TIA while in the therapeutic range. Since I did not want to risk a second brain clot, I elected the procedure. He did an excellent job, and I did not have any complications or injury secondary to the surgery. Dr. Aryana probably has more experience with ablation than any other MD in the Sacramento area. He came highly recommended by several MD's. Summary: The procedure is not a first line of treatment for atrial fibrillation, and atrial fibrillation can return after the procedure, but if you need it, he is the MD in Sacramento that would be the one that I would suggest to relatives if they needed it.
