I visited this head start today mainly out of curiosity. I had a pretty good idea what this is…read moreabout, but I wanted to see it for myself. It's located in the same building as the senior center. I saw two activity buses. There's also a fully functional playground. Head start is much more than a daycare for little ones. It's an introduction to the routine of kindergarten and elementary school. A precursor if you will. As I was leaving I saw a bunch of children going into the playground. They were adequately staffed and supervised by four adults. This is a good thing.

In 1972 I was employed here for a brief period of time. I started my working life as a part-time…read moreworker in the weaving department. I had just graduated from high school and like most other people my age wasn't sure what pathway to embark on. I enjoyed being employed here. I was just beginning a new career in textiles and because about 90% of all jobs here were textile related it seemed like the thing to do. There was opportunity for advancement. While employed at Hamrick Mills no.1 plant I quickly understood all of the functions of a cloth producing plant. This was my introduction into working full time. A much better career path opened up with a huge textile company and I pursued it. This was a great learning opportunity.
