The caring and attuned teachers are second to none, and provided a crucial anchor for him during several bumps in the road at home including the birth of a little sister and an injury to a parent that threw us off track for several months. The play based model also provides what research shows that children need at this stage of development: lots of free play and opportunities for exploration! We loved the co-op model which allowed us to watch our son grow socially and get to know the other children at school. We also got to know the other families and were fortunate to become good friends with several other families there. It truly has become a real community for us. Glad we've got another child about to start in the fall!

VERY DISAPPOINTED! Our opinion of the Family Preschool is as follows:…read more We were extremely disappointed with the manner in which our family, including our son, was treated. In our opinion the treatment was discriminatory from a racial, ethnic, and gender standpoint. We do not believe that this school fosters the level of "inclusion" that they proclaim. We were compelled to withdraw our son from the school in order to protect him and ensure his well-being.

Our family's experience with IMS Durham has been deeply disappointing and frustrating. We enrolled…read moreour three-year-old expecting a safe environment and constructive communication with parents, but repeated injury-related incidents and the school's responses ultimately caused us to lose confidence in both. And as it turned out that IMS is not licensed, it is unclear what governmental or other oversight bodies are responsible for oversight of student safety. Among other incidents, our daughter cut her finger while provided a manual pencil sharpener with a metal blade in the classroom to use independently and later came home with unexplained scratches near her eyelids. In another incident, according to the school's own account, a staff member took her hand while redirecting her to sit down, after which she began crying. She reported an arm injury and requested ice. After pickup, she was in significant pain and unable to lift her arm; she was subsequently diagnosed with nursemaid's elbow and required medical reduction. On another day, she sustained a significant tongue injury during nap time. When we picked her up, her shirt and blanket had substantial blood on them, yet we had not been contacted beforehand. We were told that approximately 16-17 children ages 3-6 were in the room and that one of the two people supervising them at that time was a 15-year-old girl on her first day. What troubled us most was what happened when we repeatedly raised safety and communication concerns. At our first and only in-person meeting with the Head of School, which primarily concerned our child's safety, our recollection is that she told us early in the discussion that if we were uncomfortable with the school's practices, we could look for another school before discussing the concerns. We followed IMS's own Handbook process and ultimately escalated our unresolved concerns to the Board Chair. We met with the Board Chair online to discuss them, but before receiving follow-up, IMS terminated our three-year-old daughter's re-enrollment only days before the new school year began. Our daughter had not been accused of misconduct or behavioral problems. The termination letter instead cited the frequency and nature of our communications--including concerns about injuries, supervision, parent notification, and regulatory status--as part of its reasoning. We were left scrambling to find another school at the last minute. In the previous two years in a daycare in another city, our kid was doing quite well. Based on our family's 7-month experience with IMS, we cannot recommend IMS.

After about a year of listening to the beautiful music coming from Attila Szasz's studio while my…read moresons were in piano and guitar lessons, my husband and I finally decided to sign our 8 year old son up for cello lessons. We couldn't be happier with this decision! Initially we were hesitant to sign up because neither parent had experience playing a stringed instrument, and did not know if this would affect practice at home during the week. We were also concerned about costs of lessons in addition to instrument rental, and our son's young age. Attila answered all of our questions and made the whole process simple and economical for us. Attila invites parents and siblings to sit in on lessons. It has made us more comfortable assisting our child with tuning his instrument and reminding him about things like posture, how to hold the bow, etc. We have been so impressed with Attila's teaching style and the connection he has already made with our child. Lessons are engaging and fun, yet laying a beautiful foundation for technical skill. Lesson pace has been just right for our child. Attila encourages polishing a piece and is not rushing him through content. He is using technology to enhance our lesson experience by recording each lesson for us to go back and listen to later at home. Attila has also introduced cello games for the ipad to keep our son engaged in practice at home. He follows up via email with detailed lesson notes and is always readily available for any questions that come up. Mom's favorite part of lessons is when Attila will duet with our son from basic things like scales to the pieces being studied. It is a joy to hear him play or improvise even the simplest pieces with our child and think it is inspirational for our child to see. If you or your child are considering trying the cello, stop researching teachers because you've found an excellent one! We are so glad to have met Attila and look forward to watching our son's journey with his teacher and this beautiful instrument unfold.
