While I had initially come to her with a 'complete' statement, our first session was spent reflecting on my personal interests, experiences, and goals. By the end of the session, I not only had the pieces to a (much more authentic) personal statement but also a better understanding of myself and my aspirations. This would be the telling start to my great experience with Dr. Beskin. By questioning the importance of every idea in the statement, she forced me to be intentional with each aspect of my narrative. While I often had to 'kill my darlings,' I also, through our conversations, realized that I regularly did not explain my ideas clearly enough and that re-wording/reshaping that sentence, paragraph, or section would drastically improve the quality of my essay. And that's why I believe this service is crucial to writing a great personal statement -- I felt that I needed not only an unbiased person who did not experience the content of my personal statement (my life) to work through and question its content but also someone who cared about my essays (and my future) as much as I did. The only way to describe how I felt after our first session is relieved. I was able to explain the task to her and go through my thoughts on what I thought was important to include in the statement. I did expect an advisor to tell me what was unnecessary, however Dr. Beskin's expertise is in pushing the envelope further by making you think critically about what is important, why it is important and further, how your concepts flow logically. For example, I applied to a Health Administration program, and was having trouble understanding how to highlight my experience through internships and other activities without repeating what was on my resume. After taking the time to speak with me and talk through my ideas, I was able to understand how I could tie my experience to my future in the program. Unlike other advisors I have worked with, we spent a lot of time fleshing out concepts before merely writing them out on paper. She is honest, direct and patient. Dr. Beskin has a gift for listening, making you ask yourself the right questions and teaching you skills that make you a better writer and thinker.
