So..... after an hour long wander about the park in the rain (thesis related... terrible weather) I…read morewandered across the street to this place - previously identified through a Yelp search.
Upstairs is a hipster clubhouse in Tiki decor, while downstairs fuels its fashion scene. Quite symbiotic... I can imagine cute babes with Mai Tais in hand trying on schoolgirls skirts.... but I digress.
To my left was a Brit with a pompadour imbibing what looked like a serious mojito, whilst chatting up the owner about ginger beer cocktails. To my right was a lad working on the B2 German workbook... and in the front room was a lovebird pair lingering over a couple of coffees. It was dark out already and my stomach was begging for yummy noms.
Studying the menu, I realized that I had to order the (seems like iconic) Lemmy Burger and a coke. Burger 6 euros with cheese... hold the tomatoes (love them, but not on burgers). My XL coke arrived with actual ice in it - still rather surprised about that! The burger arrived in short order and I dived in... Its a big burger, the cheese was a thick layer on top, with a few decorative grilled onions gracing the slick of cheese. Under the burger was a couple of nice slices of pickle - I love pickle on my burger. next time, I will order extra grilled onions and extra pickle!
Verdict: Yum. Big, meaty and tasty. Now, It was obviously grill fried, and personally I'd have preferred it a tad less done, and it might have rested for a few minutes before being assembled... but those are quibbles by a burger perfectionist. The only down on the plate were the 4 chunks of potato that were a bit dry and, well, leathery. The owner said they bake them instead of frying - but these probably had passed their 'use by' time. I'm guessing they are pretty good when freshly baked. She was a delight to chat with.
The bar is cheesy - in just the right way - and the drink selection full of classics. I was there just after sundown - and since the hideous (daytime use) fluorescent strips are shut off at sundown, I'll make a point of coming back for cocktails after dark. This place really shines with the light lowered.
