This is a destination meat store, packed with people on a fall Saturday morning. My husband was looking for steaks, but we didn't get those, as the marbling wasn't ideal. What the store specialized in was quite clear: sausage. So much sausage. We did get bacon, though, plus gobs of cheese and even a salsa to try. I made one of the bacon packs the next morning, and the quality is incredible. Some of the best I've bought from a store. If I was in the area again, I know I'd stock up on bacon! read more

First time there, my mother used to brag about this place and she'd stop every time she went home to Brownton or Mankato.... busiest , biggest meat market I've ever been in. This is THE best meat market in Minnesota, hands down! I drove 70 miles to get there. Their German Style summer sausage is excellent. I purchased a ton of meat sticks which are amazingly delicious. My wife's favorite item are the Landjeagers which are a German style link sausage. Kathy, one of many many helpful servers, was very friendly and suggested several items to sample. Also, they always offer to slice summer sausages. The varieties of meats and other foods is bountiful and I didn't even purchase steaks or chops. read more

The hype is real. Raspberry chipotle bacon is off the chain amazing! Just one of the many reasons worth making a trip to Schmidt's. So many yummy things for sale! I tried a sample of the MN summer sausage which had blueberries and wild rice as well as some garlic sausage. Definitely preferred the straight ahead garlic, but many folks in line recommended the MN to me. Just my preference! So many spices, rubs, candies, cookies and things you didn't know you needed. I was surprised to see Sweet Martha's frozen cookie dough pre-cut cookies! They also sell Dot's Homestyle Pretzels which are also totally amazing. We left with several meat snack options including the jerky, some beef stick chunks, smoked cheeses and summer sausages. Our holiday charcuterie board was over the top delish. This place is awesome!! We were lucky it wasn't too crazy busy when we arrived. All of the helpers keep things moving. Can't wait to return and get a souvenir t-shirt when they have more sizes in stock. read more

This place is fantastic, especially the jerky and beef stick ends... My friend that lives in Eagan drives an hour out to get all his meats from here, and I can definitely see why! He gave me some when I first got into town and I was hooked; I've been in 41 states for work and have gotten whatever niche, off-brand jerky brand I could (although it's not often that I buy jerky), and all of them were just only slightly better than whatever was on the shelves. On the other hand, Schmidt's is PACKED with flavor and I bought a few slices, but I quickly realized it wouldn't last me a week, which showed when I had a VERY busy day 2 days ago and have already ran out, so I bought a bag of Matador. It used to be a brand that I didn't mind, but now I find it so dull and unappealing... Lesson learned, get a full pound! read more

Located in the town of Nicollet, MN this meat market has that old town feel of going to a local butcher. You walk in and instantly smell the aroma of smoked meat. My eyes were overwhelmed and I truly did not know what to start looking at first. They have the enormous case of various cuts of meat that all looked nice and fresh. They had the freezers full of various types of brat wursts, sausages, stuffed chicken breasts. Throughout the store, they also have there own brand of various types of canned and packaged items. They had anything from pickled vegetables, bacon maple syrup, and barbecue sauce. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I definitely look forward to making a stop here before I head back home to Kentucky. read more

3 words: Raspberry Chipotle Bacon. The. Best. Bacon. Ever. I'm not kidding. YOU HAVE TO EAT THIS BACON! This was an explosion of heaven in my mouth. Eating other brands of bacon like Hormel will never be the same or as good as Schmidts. I don't even know what more to say other than telling you once again that you neeeed to get this bacon! My girlfriends father bought some for us. We ate it. All! We put it on homemade pizza and burgers and I ate it just because. Ugh. It's amazing. The best bacon in the whole world. On to the summer sausage. Well no thank you Johnsonville, Schmidts is obviously where it's at. Honestly you can't beat a fresh product. I'll never buy processed summer sausage again! It's more on the pricey side so I can't buy it all of the time. Especially because we have to call and order since we don't live near by. But man, I need that bacon. Just stopped in and spent $400 and I didn't get all I wanted because they ran out of their jelly roast beef. Supreme selections, everything I have ever tasted is great, they have their own homemade deli meats and supplies food, they make your own sausages and beef sticks and just about anything you can think of. Their help is extraordinarily good. You have to wait very little time before someone is asking if you need help. Must have had at least 20 people helping at the counters and it is not that large store. I recommend this place Highly and would suggest calling in your shopping list so they have it ready for you and you know they have everything you want. read more

I had to give this place its much-deserved five-star review. I stop here every time I'm in Minnesota, I bring their products home with me, and I talk about it to pretty much anyone who will listen. The store is large, bustling, and cute in its old-school meat market sort of way. Service is quick and efficient, and they even gift-wrapped summer sausage for us on our last visit. There are also some AMAZING family photos on the wall featuring the owners posing with trays on trays of meat products. Their sausages are all A+++++++. We just brought home about 15 pounds of various products in our luggage. I love the Wisconsin and garlic summer sausages. The meat sticks are all terrific. And my absolute FAVORITE item is the Habanero Beef Stick Ends. Why buy an entire beef stick when you can have delightful little bite-sized pieces??? The habanero is super flavorful but not unbearably hot - I prefer it to their jalapeno options, which don't have as much heat as I'd like. Super small town, big assortment butcher shop. We've visited here many times over the years and have always received prompt, fast and friendly service. One of our favorites has to be their smoked pork chops; juicy, tender and tasty!! Ribeyes are cut perfectly and always grill up with awesome flavor. I grew up in the area and have been a long time customer of Schmidt's. Santa would put Schmidt's beef jerky in our stocking every year and I would try and make mine last as long as I could - which was never very long. The store has now expanded and they even have their own jellies. I love all flavors of their beef sticks, hot dogs, pork chops, everything. My grandparents lived in Minnesota and my brother and I, their grand children, grew up eating the best summer sausage. For years we searched for that great summer sausage; a bit on the dry side with mustard seeds. We couldn't find it. Living in Wichita, KS, I thought it couldn't be found this far south, my brother thought it couldn't be found West of the Mississippi. Every trip we made we stopped at all the meat markets we could find, but we didn't find 'grandma's' summer sausage. My brother has passed, but now I, in my 70's, and my daughter keep looking. This summer we took a trip to Minnesota and asked for recommendations on where to go for good summer sausage. Schmidt's was on the list. I walked into the door and smelled the smoky aroma permeating the store. I remembered the smell; it was memories of family, the love of family, and good eating. I knew the sausage would be excellent. The Original Summer Sausage is the same as Grandma used to buy! Our search was over! We bought several sticks of the Original Summer Sausage and tried their bacon. I must add I have never had as good as bacon here in Wichita as I bought from Schmidt's. I will be ordering a long list as soon as our summer heat cools down. Very disappointed in this place. Nothing we bought was worth the $100 spent. The only thing half-way decent was the beef sticks, and still not anything better than what you find in the cities. Our ground beef and stuffed pork chops were spoiled within a day, even after being told they'd be fine for more than a few days. Everything was kept in a cooler with lots of ice for the drive home, so there is no reason this should have happened if they were selling a fresh, quality product. I'm not sure why so many people seem to like this place - it definitely wouldn't succeed in the cities. We called to let them know about our 2 spoiled items. At first he mentioned cutting us a check for the $20 or a refund on the card used, but then changed his mind to an in-store credit because he "didn't have the product to prove we weren't lying." Seriously?! We spent $100. Why would we lie about $20 worth of items? Plus we are almost 2 hours away. Who is going to drive back to prove $20 of items were spoiled?! This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard, and not how you handle a situation as a business. Obviously the small-town mentality isn't geared toward customer service. Won't ever be back. They can keep their subpar meat items. Word of wisdom... don't buy their kielbasa, liverwurst, summer sausage, ground beef, stuffed pork chops or anything else for that matter. Not worth a drive when there are so many FABULOUS meat shops closer to the cities. They'd get 0 stars if that was an option!!! read more

I got aquainted with the meat market in 1997, I frequent the market as much as I can, Love the german Beer sausage.

Born and raised in MN but now live in CO. We go back every other year and always stop at Schmidts and load up for the trip home and well as what we will consume while in MN. I feel like a kid in a candy store. Anyway, when not able to go to the store I call them and order stuff to be shipped here as well as relatives in NY and MN. Their dried beef is fantastic and I love most everything except the blood sausage which I refused to eat!!! Probably good but not for me. I will be sending their goodies again this holiday season. I think if I worked there I would have to be careful because of the smoky smell and I would start chewing on my arm!!! read more

average at best you can go to cubs, byerlys or Kowalskis and get the same thing the only thing they have going for them is their summer sausage and beef sticks I have been going to schmidts since 1980 and they really lost their focus on whats good most of their stuff is made by others last steaks and ribeyes I bought were so tough we thru them out , id rather do my monthly trip to Cossetas in St Paul and get fresh baked bread made on there and when I order my meat they do it right first time and everytime. Schmidts pork chops average at best hamburger you can get anywhere that schmidts sells for a premium price its nothing special. I love German potatoe salad but they apparently are using premade potatoe slices so the quality is so very inconsistent the last time I bought it the potatoes were not fully cooked and almost crunchy even though the flavor was good. the employees complain when I order thinly sliced meats which I get often at other meat markets several times when I went there and so I got tired of it and will never go back they just don't care read more

This is our favorite meat market. In fact, it's the only one we go to, even though it's about 90 miles from our home. We only get here every couple of months when we're visiting friends or family, so we stock up. This is the only place we can find a wonderful cranberry muenster that we love. We usually get their excellent Havarti and horseradish cheeses as well. The horseradish is not spicy at all, just has a nice flavor. They have several kinds of summer sausage that are unique to this store and which my husband and son crave. My very picky son adores the Cheddarwurst and my husband can't choose between the garlic, the German Beer and the Swan Lake, so he gets all three. I like the Minnesota the best because it has blueberries and wild rice. They have a small but tasty selection in the deli area where we usually indulge in some great pickled herring (try it, even if you think you don't like pickled herring, like I did for years). The selection varies, but we always hope to score some smoked salmon spread - one of the best we've found - and whatever variation of chicken salad they've got. The service is great. If you know what you want, you can call in your order like we do when we're on our way from the Twin Cities and they'll have it sliced, packaged, weighed and waiting for you. We did that once when we knew it would be close to closing time when we got there and even paid for it over the phone so all we had to do is run in and pick it up. If you're a local, you already know about Schmidt's. If you're not but find yourself anywhere near Nicollet while passing through the area, and you enjoy smoked and cured meats, Schmidt's is definitely worth a stop. All of the great Yelp reviews aren't exaggerated. I recently purchased the standard Summer Sausage and a package of Franks. Both compare very well with the best examples I have seen. The shop is large with many, many feet of refrigerated cases packed with interesting cured and fresh meats. The only ding I might mention is that the Franks package I purchased lists MSG as an ingredient. To some folks who have higher than average sensitivity to the effects of MSG, this will be significant. I didn't see it listed as an ingredient in the Summer Sausage, and it would be interesting to hear Schmidt's side of the rationale for using it at all as it would seem completely unnecessary in a product that is already so heavily salted and flavored. MSG not withstanding, it is a great place and a gem of a find! read more
