It is a beautiful Spring day and you feel like going to the museum...ah..I wanted to see this…read morepalace and the gardens for some time already. It is located in a beautiful woods and has a great adjacent park. You start with parking close to the stables and car garages. If you feel like already having a small break maybe you can check the restaurant/ cafe which is located in the old garage. They have a great selection of sandwiches, salads, soups and sweets. You can enjoy your break on a nice terrace. If you are already up for it you can start your walk to the palace and the gardens. It will take you about 7 minutes to walk through a really nice alley to the main palace. It is a very big palace. Both wings of the palace host different types of exhibitions. Currently there is Sisi exhibition in one wing and orders in another. Sisi's exhibition was very nice, informative and nicely done. Order exhibition...ah...they make orders they give those to each other...not something that gets much of my attention. Our journey to the main palace started. You go thorugh floors and see different bedrooms, sitting rooms, writing rooms of princes, princesses and the regent queen. I really loved all the different styles of the rooms. You can see rooms in the decor from 17 - 18 century, from 19th century, but also from the 50 of 20th century. Really impressive. I am sure you could just stroll around a lot longer..but the park invites you.. If the weather is great just take your time and stroll through this beautiful park and adjacent forest. On your way back to your car be sure to check the stables and the garages. It is a great museum, little bit off the main route, but definitely worth visiting. I decided to give 4 instead of 5 stars, as I found parking fee, 5 euro on a higher side and there was not sufficient information about the exhibits.

This National museum is a real pleasure to visit. it's been beautifully restored to historic…read moreconditions. To walk through it is to gain a sense of past royals and their lives. I do not, however, recommend taking this tour with a toddler! It's a tad too contemplative a stop for the under-five set. The gardens were great for running and exploring, though. This is a place I hope to return to someday (alone), perhaps for one of their special exhibitions.

(my visit was in September 2015)…read more Oh, I am so conflicted about the museum. I appreciate art, I worked in the arts, and I want it to flourish and be shared with as many people as possible, but the curation was so poor. Let's start with the good: there's no admission charge for the permanent collection. Now to the bad: There are some great, fantastic pieces on exhibition, but the low quality displays are so distracting. Artwork is encased in plastic or glass that is slightly opaque and reflects a glare, so it's incredibly difficult to see the pieces in their full glory. The lighting is inconsistent and absolutely awful in some rooms. The museum benefits from beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows that let in so much light, but then you turn a corner and enter a room with fluorescent lights 40 or 60 ft up on the ceiling, casting shadows that shroud the pieces. At the time I went, there was a special exhibit area showcasing a piece of installation art that was fantastic. The staging in the room was done properly: let the artwork be the focus and configure the room and setting around the art. And don't expect too much from the gift shop. I was hoping to pick up a few postcards or souvenirs to send home but was sadly disappointed with just books and knick-knacks. It's no MoMA or Met.
