Eden Animal Sanctuary - Manfred, homecoming!

    Eden Animal Sanctuary

    (1 review)

Anyone that has known me for any length of time knows that chelonians (broad way to group turtles…read moreand tortoises together... they're different, people!) are my spirit animal, and I've wanted one as a pet for a very very very long time. After a lot of research about all things tortoise and acquiring/assembling my set up, I decided that just buying a tortoise from a store wasn't an option. It was captive bred or adoption. A captive bred situation didn't work out and I stumbled upon Eden Animal Sanctuary (and Manfred!) with a Craig's List search. They're a chelonian specific rescue that operates on a private property. They rehabilitate surrendered turtles/tortoises and find the PERFECT homes for them, if they're considered adoptable. Filled out an "I'm interested" form on AdoptAPet.com and FB messaged the sanctuary (https://www.facebook.com/edenanimalsanctuary), letting them know that I'd submitted the form. Rachel responded to my message within minutes, sending me the adoption application and asking for pictures of my set up. The application was long and very thorough. I was a little nervous filling it out, even though I knew that Manfred belonged with me and that I could give him an amazing life (and that I'm going to have to put him in my will because he will likely outlive me). Then the waiting began. I was anxiously prepared to wait over a weekend (as I'd sent in the application on a Thursday evening), but, on Friday afternoon, I received an email saying that I'd been approved! I may or may not have danced around like an idiot for the rest of the day. Just kidding, I totally did. The following Saturday, a couple friends and I made our way to an adoption event in Spring Branch, where the rescue had a presence. I had no difficulty ignoring all the adoptable dogs (not usually the case with me) at the event as I made my way to the turtle/tortoise table. I knew it was my Manfred the moment I saw him. I chatted with Rachel a little bit and filled out his adoption form, promising to return him to the sanctuary if I could no longer care for him. I was also able to meet a couple of the other chelonians from the rescue, including a teenaged sulcata named Radar and three box turtles. I paid my adoption fee (donations and adoption fees go towards building habitats and caring for the chelonians) and skipped away with my new, best reptile buddy. All in all, I can't recommend Eden Animal Sanctuary enough. It's obvious to me that Rachel loves what she does and loves the animals even more.

He would have spent every night inside and most days going in and out as he pleased. I doubt a large energetic dog could be truly happy in their "ideal" environment.

First of all, he was NOT treated properly. The kitten was still highly contagious and has now infected my entire house. I am covered in ringworm, it spread to my scalp, which can cause permanent hair loss, and I am now forced into a daily routine of disinfecting everything for 2 months--washing my sheets every day, using special medication, washing my hair with medicated shampoo, bleaching my floors, and even having to replace my bed. This is not a minor inconvenience--this is a serious fungal infection that could have been completely avoided if the Humane Society had done their job properly and been transparent from the start. Instead, I was only told about the supposed "treatment" after I had already committed to the adoption, which means I was already exposed. And clearly, this kitten was still very much contagious. What's worse? When I called them about it, not only was I offered NOTHING in terms of reimbursement, but they actually had the audacity to act like they were doing me a favor by waiving the return fee since I was within the 30-day window. A return fee?? For a sick cat they failed to treat properly?? That's outrageous. To make matters worse, one of their staff members had the nerve to tell me that ringworm "goes away on its own" if you have a strong immune system. Excuse me? That is a blatant lie. I have an incredibly strong immune system and I have NEVER had ringworm in my life--until now, thanks to this complete negligence. I have had over six cats in my lifetime and never once dealt with this. This infection came directly from the kitten I adopted from them. I trusted the Humane Society to provide honest, responsible care for their animals before placing them in homes, but they failed in every possible way. This is unacceptable, unhygienic, and downright unethical. I will NEVER adopt from them again, and I urge anyone considering adopting from this place to think twice unless you want to end up in the same nightmare I'm dealing with. They should be held accountable for this level of carelessness.
