I remember watching these games. The 1972 Munich Olympics…read more American swimmer Mark Spitz was the most decorated athlete at these games. He won a record seven gold medals at the games each in record breaking time. Amazing! His record remained untouched for 36 years until American swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 London Olympics Games. Michael Phelps also set seven world records at those games. Due to the 1972 Massacre of the Israeli Team and a German police officer, there was worry for Mark Spitz safety. Understandably so. Today, you can visit the swimming hall in the beautiful Olympic Village. You can also swim in the pool. Check the hours.

The pool itself is very nice but not exactly what I was expecting. They have only three lanes marked for "sports swimmers", ie people who want to swim laps. Actually three lanes is supposedly a lot for Germany although it's pretty surprising to an American swimmer. Thus, it gets a bit crowded in the lanes during the summer, around noon and after work. Early mornings and 1pm are good times to go to get the pool more to yourself. They also do not have flags for backstrokers and their lane lines aren't colored so as to indicate where the wall is. They also have a sauna and a great diving pool, although I haven't tried either. The hours are very generous, to accommodate any schedule and they have a swim shop in the building in case you forget anything.

The ambiance is great, the number of routes is expansive, and you can CLIMB ON TOP OF THE WORLD (I'm obviously jazzed about this experience). There's 3 levels of climbing -- the first floor is pretty much all slab, the second floor has a ton of different caves, the globe, campus board, and more, and there's an outdoor roof area which is probably nice to climb on during the summer months. We went in November so that was a no go for us :) Unfortunately the mask/testing/covid rules change pretty often (due to the government, not anything Boulderwelt has control of) so I recommend following their insta to keep track of what's required in order to get inside and climb.

The Staffa re also very friendly and willing to help whenever possible. The only drawback is that as of around 6pm weekdays and around 10am on weekends and bank holidays it's is really over crowded....clearly because it's loved by so many people which speaks for the Biulderwelt but can be a little frustrating sometimes. In summer they are opening another one in Munich as I understand it so hopefully then it will improve!
