Patrick at SB Physio is fantastic! I have plantar fasciitis and as an avid walker who was tryna get back into running I was devastated when I couldn't continue walking. Dr. Thomas at The Ryu Hurvitz Orthopedic Clinic recommended I see Patrick for physical therapy and I am so glad I did!! Going from not being able to walk from my car to just get to the inside of where i work to NOW walking 12,000 steps is AMAZING!! I'm not completely healed yet, but i am on the mend I bought a pair of Hokas (yes they are expensive but worth it) Patrick recommended the Strtch Ez, and while at work I use my foot rocker. I was referred for PT for my shoulder, and after reviewing many companies I chose SB Physio based on their high yelp reviews. Since they have high reviews, they had a long wait time time to get in, so it took about 4 weeks to get an appointment. Again, I went in for my shoulder, so on my first visit I was asked many questions about my issues and how it lead me there. One of the things I mentioned was I originally thought my should and wrist issues were connected, but after different medical visits it was proven they were not. The physical therapist I was assigned to, Shawn, clung to the my theory of the two being connected and therefore did not focus on my shoulder. I won't go into the details of his extremely unprofessional talk about MDs and Surgeons, but I will say he was focused more on my wrist which needed, and since had, surgery on. I was going to let it play out for the 6 weeks, however I got a text from SB Physio with a survey which I answered honestly. Almost immediately I received a call from Kimberly at their location who wanted more details on my feedback. She seemed very concerned about my experience, and was very professional during our conversation. I let her know I have had PT in the past and know I am supposed to have exercises to do, both at therapy and home, and that Shawn was not providing me with at home exercises, and hardly had me to them at therapy. At that point we collectively decided I should change therapists and because it was now after hours on a Friday, she would have her schedulers call be the following week. I mentioned to her that I would feel uncomfortable going when Shawn was there, and she assured me they would schedule me for his off days as my schedule was flexible. After a week went by and I hadn't heard back, I called and left a message hoping to get on their schedule. Another week went by and no call back so I felt it was in my best interest to chose another company since it took 4 weeks to get in with them in the first place, and I would most likely have to wait that long again. I figured they were busy but would eventually call back to schedule, but it has now been 2 months and I still haven't received a call from them. When I spoke with Kimberly, I mentioned to her I had chosen SB Physio based on their Yelp reviews, and I was glad she took the time she did to call me and discuss the issue I had with Shawn. I told her I appreciated her time and understanding, and looked forward to moving on with a new therapist. I also told her I don't like to give bad Yelp reviews without a good reason, but unfortunately I am now doing just that. I am very disappointed that Kimberly didn't follow up to see why I wasn't back on their schedule as she seemed to be very eager to make things right. I am aware the schedulers most likely dropped the ball, however Kimberly mentioned on our call that she was the manager, and in all experiences I have had in life, managers are responsible for seeing things through to the end. read more

I am a 30-yr old surfer living in Santa Barbara. After two years of searching through Santa Barbara's best physical therapists by trial and error, I've finally found the one I will stick with. Being the son of a registered nurse and a trial lawyer, I tend to ask lots of questions to understand my injury, the healing process, and the necessary steps toward rehabilitation. Long story short - I have always had high expectations of my physicians and people involved in my care, and SB Physio has fulfilled them. I found SB Physio through a referral from my orthopedic surgeon, Jervis Yao, in order to work on reducing chronic back pain. During a thorough assessment of my symptoms, Dr. Art Van Leuven was able to see things in my movement that were exacerbating my pain - this had yet to be noticed by the four previous physical therapists I had visited prior to SB Physio. The exercises prescribed by him have relieved much of my day-to-day pain while increasing my ability to ride my surfboard in a high-intensity fashion. Turns out he attended the top PT school in the nation, USC, so it didn't surprise me that he saw things that others did not. Most recently, I sprained my ankle pretty bad and have been going to SB Physio for rehab on that as well. As an avid surfer, I was also impacted psychologically by my inability to surf and the thought that I may not be able to perform at the high level I was previously used to. The patience and care of the SB Physio team helped immensely and I felt like I had a group of people motivated to get me back to as strong, or stronger, then before the injury. No more searching for me. I highly recommend SB Physio to anyone with an injury or to even assess some immobility or movement issues. I'm back to the surf and have avoided surgery, and I owe it to SB Physio. Two thumbs up. read more

I love this place. I've been coming here on and off for a shoulder impingement, then later more regularly, following a separated shoulder and repair operation. Staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. I've been to Sansum's and this is so much more comfortable. SB Physio's space is just the right size and never feels crowded. I can generally make a series of appointments a week or two in advance. Steve Daum has been my PT throughout, is a great listener and really has a gift. He pulls and stretches on my arm and shoulder - knows just how much to push it, then has me do a mix of different strengthening exercises there and at home. I've made a ton of progress on my shoulder, from barely moving to getting nearly my full range of motion back. I'm going to be superman when it's all done. With my insurance and after hitting my deductible, it's extremely reasonable too. Will never go anyplace else! read more

Stephen Daum is beyond competent at his craft. I found him to be consistently focused on the best possible treatments for rehabilitating my broken knee/leg. As a fairly high maintenance and stubborn non professional athlete, I'd always believed my exercise regimen/program superior to anything someone else could recommend. He proved me wrong! As someone who has gone through physical therapy on 6 separate occasions over my 40 years, Stephen's intuitively superior approach and treatment plan place him in a league of his own. I am a former basketball/ football player, i've had multiple injuries. The one that led me to Art was a herniated disk in my back which led to a bevy of other ailments associated with the injury. I had went through 5-6 different therapists before Art, NOTHING HELPED. Finally I met Art Van Lauren and because of the length of time the injury was lingering, he took me off of regular exercise and put me on a 2 month schedule of his special movements and strengthening routines.......After that 2-3 months, when I stepped on the basketball court I was FASTER, STRONGER, MORE EXPLOSIVE (added 4" to my Vertical) than I had EVER been before! Not to mention my back pain was gone! 4 years later, I tore my Patella Tendon, long road to recovery on that one, but with Arts help I am about 90% healed. He is super knowledgable and very approachable, doesn't rush you in and out and is overall a good guy. i've went through them all as far as PTs go, and Art is this athletes PT FOR LIFE! But you have to remember if you don't stick with the workouts on your own, and symptons continue, it is YOUR fault. put in the work he suggests you WILL be healed read more

After I tore my tendon, I had to be off my feet and rest it for two months. When I was finally ready for PT, I went to SB Physio. I had one visit. The PT gave me exercises that caused my tendon to re-tear. When I told my doctor about the exercises the PT had prescribed, she was appalled: "He told you to do WHAT????? Why would he say that?" The PT's advice caused me to lose two months healing time. Very unhappy. read more

I was referred to Art VanLeuvan by my Orthopedic surgeon in an attempt to avoid major spinal surgery and to deal with strength and pain issues related to scoliosis and spinal stenosis.
